Most tasters land in the "very good, not the wildest Foursquare" camp, and that's the honest read. This 2004 is the lighter, more delicate of the early Exceptional Casks: vanilla, marzipan, dark chocolate, dried fruit and a lot of orange, with warm spice on the finish. A few find the nose subtle and the palate a touch column-heavy; most just call it elegant and easy to keep drinking.

Gets me a subjective sympathy point in addition, because the high-percentage Foursquare profile at the time was definitely something new, which has caused enthusiasm. But also regardless of that, an excellent representative of the typical Foursquare profile.

A great rum! Complex, very easy to drink. PLV top! Edit 03/2022: Already collector's prices. The body is leaner than all FSs tasted so far. Very elegant. Next to the Plenipotenziario my favorite FS.

29.01.2026 Retasting and I still like it a lot. Found this sample at the bottom of the box I just started going through. --------- This one is lighter and most delicate of the 2004, 2005 and 2007 Exceptional casks. A very nice rum from the nose through the palate right onto the finish. A lot of orange throughout. A slightly dry rum slightly sweeter than the other two. Really smooth and complex bottle that is already hard to find.

Nostalgic Foursquare for me, one of the first higher-proof rums I tried back then. On the nose vanilla, wood, a bit of caramel and a light spice. On the palate typical Foursquare with oak, spices and a pleasant sweetness. Not an extraordinary Foursquare, but solid and still nice to drink.

This Foursquare stands out clearly from its successors. The nose bears an uncanny resemblance to an old Enmore, with a slightly old-fashioned spirit, marked but dry fruit, leather, tobacco, spices, varnished wood, cocoa and coffee, all rounded out with caramel and marzipan. There's a sort of aromatic grassiness that recalls some Versailles. It's a real change from the more classic Foursquare nose. The attack is smooth, balanced with spice, wood, tobacco and toast on one side, and fruit and caramel notes on the other, all wrapped in a layer of bourbon that amplifies the greediness. There's also a certain freshness reminiscent of aromatic herbs, as on Enmore distilled in Pot Still. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is warm, spicy and toasty. There are hints of dried fruit, chocolate, hazelnut, gourmet wood, caramel and toffee, as well as notes of fresh tobacco. The finish is subtle and elegant. A rather whimsical Foursquare that's off the beaten track, both olfactory and palate-wise, which is very appreciable for a distillery often characterized as one-dimensional.

A rum tasted at the Lucerne Rum Festival. Rum-soaked raisins on the first nose, banana, vegetal, blood orange, and a little varnish. The palate is very balanced, the texture is smooth, pastry-like. The upper palate is especially stimulated. The finish is long. The empty glass smells of coconut and smoked wood. A hut by the beach, a peaceful night.

The first vintage from the Exceptional Cask Series by Foursquare. The aroma is sweet, full of chocolate, marzipan, and caramel. On the palate, it's a beautifully rounded rum with orange notes, integrated alcohol, and a lovely finish. Very nice.

One of my first rums and my first Foursquare at the time. Without it, maybe I wouldn't have fallen into it so much. At the time the price was incredible and affordable for the young student I was. That's a concern I have less today but for those entering the world of rum it's important to have access to excellent rums at a reasonable price.

My very first Foursquare. Bought blind in my early days and I'm still thrilled. In my eyes one of the best Foursquare. On the nose the typical flavor, you know exactly where it comes from. On the palate intense and smooth followed by a long smooth finish.

The nose is very light, especially compared to some of the more recent ECS releases, with vanilla, honey and marzipan - really rather refined but subtle. On the mouth the full proof base comes through, slightly more one dimensional and not quite as well integrated as the best Foursquare’s, with a thick dark chocolate element and some barrel influence. The finish is medium long with some warming spice, and a real creamy quality. It’s a solid rum (aren’t all Foursquare’s?) but drinking it today highlights the quality of Richard’s more recent releases

Extremely indulgent nose with everything needed, the pastry side dominates but a slight woody, varnish note makes this nose very elegant. On the palate it's still indulgent but this time the spices dominate, pepper, cardamom, vanilla. It's woody with tobacco then banana also appears after a few minutes. Long finish on spices and caramel.

🥃 Foursquare 2004 – 59% Third installment of the legendary Exceptional Cask Selection series, this 2004 vintage is part of a collection that has become cult and is slowly approaching its last chapter with number 31, announced as “Epilogue”. Here we have a Single Blended Rum: a blend of rums from pot still and traditional column distillation. Distilled from Barbados and Guyana molasses, fermented about two days before distillation, then blended once before aging and a second time after. 👉 11 years in former bourbon barrels 👉 bottled in September 2015 👉 first Foursquare bottled at its natural strength: 59% A little anecdote for enthusiasts: the first batches, like this one, still had screw caps instead of the traditional cork stopper. 👃 Nose: remarkable aromatic freshness. Raisin at the opening, then a hint of cinnamon liqueur. 👅 Palate: elegant and precise, on sweet licorice, black cherry, and a walnut liqueur that adds depth. 🔥 Finish: fruity then intensely chocolatey, with a slight smoky veil. 💬 Opinion: a rum of remarkable balance and great complexity. No fireworks or incredible storytelling: just a rum that speaks for itself.

Powerful varnish nose at first, then with oxidation comes a whisky/bourbon aroma. Impossible to tell by the nose that it's a rum!! The palate is strong in alcohol to give way to a beautiful complexity, finish maybe on flambéed banana... Very good but for lovers of strong sensations!

... Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It is a rum appreciated especially by rum lovers who are fed up with sugar and are looking for a gentle, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. Simply pleasant and not aggressive flavors.

Sweetish on the nose, with notes of glue and spicy oak. The influence of the bourbon barrels is clearly noticeable. In the glass, rather caramel-colored. On the tongue, a slight sharpness, cinnamon, oak, and a bit of raisin can be tasted. The finish is rather sharp and sweetish with caramel and oak lingering.
