Diplomatico Seleccion de Familia
Here's the twist: this is the Diplomatico that's meant to be less sweet, and most tasters agree it's a step up from the Reserva Exclusiva — rounder, a touch drier, with more pot-still character. Expect honey, vanilla, raisin and soft oak, sometimes a little cinnamon and pepper on the finish. Still, plenty of members find it "a bit overly sweet," so don't expect a bone-dry sipper.

Rounder, less-sweet Diplomatico for easy sipping Most see it as a rounder, less sugary Diplomatico that's easy to sip neat. The catch: several still call it too sweet and not especially complex or exciting.

Much more complex and less sweet than the Reserva Exclusiva. I enjoy this one much more. For me, it evokes a strong, dark honey (pine, chestnut, ...) mixed with green herbs (herbal tea) and chocolate. Sipping it reminds me of a lush tropical rainforest.

Personally, one of the best rums I ever tasted, very round and fruity. Talking with a friend, we talked about how well overproof suits on Venezuelan rums and this product is proof of it. The nose on this rum is just a delicacy, highly recommended. :)

This rum apparently has a higher proportion of pot still distillate than the two standard bottlings, however, the harmonious profile of this Spanish is masked by the high dosage. Too bad.
Review by Korkennase🥃
This Botucal is too sweet for me, although the 43% is a good fit. I had expected a little more. As I've already tried a few Botucals, I would prefer the Botucal #3 from the series, which has been my favorite so far.

Nothing exceptional, but much better than other Diplomaticos (Réserva in particular) sold in bars or supermarkets. With fewer added sugars, it's sure to go down well as a digestive.

Molasses, roasted notes, raisin, honey and very very smooth. Less sweet than the reserva exclusiva but still on the sweeter side. Also more expensive.

This is a rum in the lower price range. That said its still a pretty good buy and in my opinion a good beginner rum as well because it is sweet and well balanced. The nose is sweet and fruity with wood, vanilla, nuts and a hint of honey. The palate is sweet, light and woody with fruits, vanilla and earthy notes. The finish is short to medium and sweet with wood, vanilla and raisin.

Very pleasant improvement in comparison to original Diplomatico. The few years in sherry casks improve the roundness of the experience pretty well. The price is maybe little to much but still I am quite happy and I can recommend this one.
Review by HenryL
Clearly the Botucal nose, slightly less sweet and therefore more pleasant than the Reserva Exclusiva. Goes down very well, easy to drink. But neither complex nor exciting and still a clear honey-like sweetness.
Review by Dunzi
Review by Markus Fjellstad Israelsen
From a complete rum rookie: smooth, bit sweet (nor too much) but with a good variety of flavours. Finish is great, hinting at fruits and wood. Would have no problem buying this again.
Review by epicsune 🇸🇪
Nose is a sweet rum with vanilla and dried fruits. Caramel and sweet raisins with vanilla and tropical fruits. A light peppery and overripe tone on the palate.
Review by Motvind
Åt det sötare hållet med mycket smak. Honung, tropiskt frukt och vanilj. Riktigt god.

si il n'y a vraiment aucun ajout de sucre, il est plutôt agréable, simple mais agréable.

Found the nose wanting. Really needed to get into the glass and didn’t get very much beyond a nice sweet but unremarkable general rum aroma. Out front was hit immediately with a bit overly sweet vanilla. The mouthfeel starts off thick and immediately dispels into something thinner. The best part of this rum is the finish which I thought was med-long with persistent cinnamon and pepper. Nice spice level with lurking vegetal notes and very faint hint of char.

Read full review →This rum hasn't given me any cause for excitement. At the same time it is relatively inoffensive. It's still a little too sweet for my tastes but it's certainly better than the likes of Don Papa and A.H Riise. That isn't really praise though. This is bang average. Doesn't even...
