Karukera Millésime 1997
One taster called it "unexpectedly good," and that seems to be the pattern here. Anise and licorice lead, backed by cherry, plum and green fig, with herbal, grassy notes and light oak underneath. A slight saltiness gives it character. The body reads a touch thin at 46% — several wished for more punch — but it stays balanced and quietly interesting.

Aggregated from 20 community reviews.
Herbal, anise-driven agricole with a thin edge A well-cask-aged Guadeloupe agricole that wins people over: herbal, spiced, cherry-and-anise character. The common catch is a body some find a little thin for the strength.

I'm curious and definitely have to try more of Karukera, I've heard some good things; but this one is a bit thin at just over 46%. Nose: spicy, fruity and green. At first, however, soft, Danish sweet licorice is up front, followed by fennel seeds and light caraway. Herbaceous with camomile and saffron. The fruit is green fig and fresh guava. However, the overall impression is slightly woody with rather fresh wood. There is also a slight sweetness of sugar water. Beautiful nose, but somewhat short and flat. 83 Palate: initially it seems thin, but then a nice spiciness quickly emerges. It is slightly salty with caraway and a little nutmeg, plus aniseed or licorice. There is also some fruit, a mixture of plum and cherry and fresh guava again. On the finish, it becomes increasingly grassy and herbal, almost with a hint of cucumber and sugar cane juice at the end. 79 If this rhum had more %%, it would be even nicer...

Nose: Spicy notes predominate, with aniseed leading the way. Subtle fruit and Palate: Mild start, alcohol needs a little time to develop, but then a long-lasting appearance. Cherry and herbs with a certain freshness. Wood is also slightly perceptible. Finish: Herbs and honey, I like it. Conclusion: Agricole that draws me to its side overall. Alcohol balanced and full-bodied. With its own character without being overpowering.

interesting and especially the unexpected saltiness of Karuker puts it in a winning position in direct comparison with Saint James 1997 and Trois Rivieres 1997. Of course the herbs in the background underline it all slightly.

For me, pleasantly drinkable, woodiness on the tongue with a spicy aftertaste, a classy drink for the evening, would like to try it with a doutnik. Interesting and classy agricole.
