Reach for this to build tiki drinks, not to sip — it's a clove-and-lime falernum syrup at 11%, not a rum. On its own it reads syrupy and spice-forward, with a limey freshness and a certain searing bite. In a Mai Tai or corn 'n' oil it earns its keep, adding spice and muscle that fruit alone can't. Sweet, and one member called it "the classic" for good reason.

Sure, it's not rum but a liqueur, so it's difficult to compare with rum, but this is definitely one of the best liqueurs I know. I just love every cocktail where this stuff goes in, it gives a great complexity.

#7308 16.09.2026 Running a few samples after a terrible night because of a tetanus shot I got yesterday. Listening to some nice Trance on Spotify. Pretty nice bottling especially when looking at the price tag. Fruity profile with spice, nuts, roasted, sweet, sugarcane, marzipan, warm and a sour touch to the palate. Found it to be good in Pepsi Max.

To me this is the well know classic. Some limey freshness on the nose with cloves and some smoke (?). Spicey yet fresh/not too heavy. Similar on the palate. Well balanced with some limey freshness and spices. Not overly sweet. Not excessively complex either. Classic and well loved choice.

A small addendum to the comparison test of 3 Falernums with DomM in the Blume of Hawaii. Thanks to Franzi who made this possible. For me, the Velvet is the winner. My number 2 is Jürgen's, which seems a bit artificial. Trailing in last place is Perola's, here the clove is too dominant for me.

A must in a corn n oil cocktail, the bomb and tastes so divine. Obviously this is a mixing drink not something you drink on its own. A cocktail bar must.

Normally used to embellish my mai-tai. Tested on its own, just to see. This is a syrup with a strong clove and spice flavour. Limited interest for me as it's too sweet and I'm not a fan of liqueurs.

The classic alcoholic falernum and market leader. This one has a much more pronounced taste of lime and funk than many others and comparatively less direct presence of almonds. It can be a bewildering taste at first because it is purely crafted as a rum accompaniment. In cocktails this falernum makes itself clearly known as it has a certain searing quality, but this is entirely appropriate in tiki drinks that need muscle from the non-fruit ingredients to come through. A solid classic and the safe choice for your falernum rum cocktails.

I tested 4 Falernums. The Belle Booze takes first place for me in taste. It is sweet, fruity, spicy and very balanced. Great with tonic water, neat on ice and in cocktails. The Taylor‘s Velvet is significantly cheaper and my value-for-money winner. I always have both at home. I don’t need more Falernum. The Bitter Truth golden Falernum and the one from Revolte are somewhat inferior.

Well, it's actually just a syrup. Or a liqueur syrup. Pleasantly fruity tropical, spicy oriental liqueur. Also a bit citrusy but already very sweet. Good cocktail ingredient. Better than the cheap syrups.
