Velier Clarendon Warren Khong Villa Paradisetto EMB 1995
Near-universal love here, with tasters calling it a benchmark 95 EMB. Expect glue and menthol on the nose, then a wave of banana, apricot and tropical fruit meeting old oak, black tea, dark chocolate and licorice. Bone-dry, tannic, deeply complex. The only real gripe: at 67% the alcohol turns up for a few, and one reviewer found it slightly one-dimensional.
The community says- Wild tropical fruit
- Mint and menthol
- Alcohol well integrated

Given some time in the Glas the nose is amazingly round and balanced, yet complex and interesting. The high ABV is very well integrated making this an excellent rum to experience its complexity. Brilliant MM :) Edit: side by side with other strong contenders, the WK remains my 95 EMB benchmark. Very good cask, bottled at a very nice point in time.

What kind of crazy stuff is this?! 🌿🇯🇲 Mint and menthol and allspice through and through, dark after eight chocolate, lychee, raspberry and apricot and other "floral" fruits, then lots of tannins and barrel notes in an endless comeback of intense menthol black tea, sour Ethiopian espresso, plus loads of mint and subtle cacao nibs and dark chocolate and then again that insanely awesome lime peel and raspberry note! Awesome! Crazy how 24 years tropical and 67% ABV are almost not noticeable...😍🙏 Absolute divine stuff!! If you let it breathe long enough, the slightly meaty notes typical for EMB come through, but without being too dominant...

A very distinctive Clarendon with a more edgy character than many other 95ers. On the nose, rather dry and spicy, with notes of mint, old wood, black tea, and only restrained fruit. On the palate, tight, slightly bitter, and clearly influenced by cask and aging, less sweet but with lots of grip and structure. Comes across as demanding and uncompromising, focused more on depth and seriousness than charm or approachability. A rum that deliberately polarizes and requires concentration.

Wow, great. Nice that I saved this representative of the 95 EMB batch for last. Very fruity, but still with the full force of wood, mint/menthol and spice with chocolate. A cross-comparison is still pending, but from my gut feeling this is the leader of the top group - but certainly right at the front.

A monymusk show! A great rum of a thousand flavors!!!

Velier has been a forerunner with this powerful, authentic Clarendon with a very deep, complex aromatic spectrum. The nose is extremely fruity: banana, pineapple, coconut, cherry, raspberry and dried fruit put on a show of great roundness. This is followed by woody notes concentrated on oak, tobacco and medicinal notes on glue, varnish and a light dose of esters. The profile that emerges is very intense and balanced. The attack on the palate is like a wild beast: raw, dry and very tannic, we find notes of leather, very intense oak, but also dark chocolate, coffee and spices (pepper, licorice, aniseed) that accentuate the bitterness. Exotic fruits are more succinct, touched by notes of tobacco, black tea and menthol. Alcohol is superbly integrated into this very elaborate profile. The finish is very long, contrasted by the power of menthol, the tannin of wood and leather, the bitterness of cocoa, coffee and spices, but also by that warmth in the mouth that evokes roasted, smoky notes. Fruit binds it all together with a touch of sweetness. An extreme profile, deep and exciting, which is what Clarendon is known for.

In comparison today two EMBs from Velier. RX432 (Warren Khong 1995) and RX674 (Guiseppe Begoni 1997) are both very complex and good. In comparison, I think that the 1997 vintage is a little ahead here. But both are excellent in my opinion, although they are different in taste, which is very fascinating.

Eiber is the best Monymusk I've tried so far. Great funky nose, very complex and lots of fruit like banana, mango, papaya... a bit of mint, coconut, and citrus peel. Alcohol perfectly integrated. On the palate Real power... tropical fruits, mint, dark chocolate, black tea, a bit of leather, anise, and coffee. Alcohol also perfectly integrated here.

9,3:On the nose, glue and polish, light esters, slightly metallic, tropical fruits like banana and coconut, some orange peel, thick and round, minty molasses, flowery, roasted wood with caramel, quite strong barrel, impact, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, dried and yellow fruits are out, the wood is a bit smoky, spicy with allspice, lavender is obvious, as the molasses is vegetal, fresh. Some rubber hints also join. 9:On the palate, the attack is quite spicy, complex, dry, with minty molasses, dark with black tea, licorice, fresh, grassy, flowery with lavender, hints of menthol, fruity with banana, mango, citrus, green fruits, some tannins arise, the oak is roasted with caramel, dark chocolate, espresso, spicy with anise, allspice. 9,2:The finish is very long and round, dry&tannic, slightly metallic, medicinal with menthol, various roasted oak notes, spicy, slightly smoky, pair flowery, minty molasses, dark with black tea, licorice and tropical, citrus fruits.. Great alcohol integration! Edit:25.6.26

Bottle kill at a friend's house, second Dram! A killer integration of alcohol. Lively, ripe fruit, tropical and even some summer orchard, fresh and intense mint, almost a TDL in itself. The barrel is very present and expresses itself through many island spices. Certainly one of the best representatives of the 1995 EMB. I want a bottle 🤤

This is a rum with a very nice nose to finish an overall great rum. The nose is fruity with barrel and some earthy notes. The palate is well balanced and complex with a lot of fruit in the front and oak to follow. In the back i find tannins, caramel, anise and coffee. The finish is long with a nice mix of oak, coffee, licorice and tannins.

Insanely ripe and beautiful nose. Less solvent than the 1997, iodine, salty and spice coming from the barrel. Very warm, full and interesting. And then banana bread, mint and varnish. Complex! A stunner in the mouth! A little more wood and spice. Finish in the same direction. Dust-dry. Great rum! Megacomplex, rough edges. Tasted together with the 1997. This one has more solvent, more fruit and much less wood maturity. This one is more solid!

Amazing rum. So much peach 🍑 and nectarines. Orange peal, 🍌, glue, menthol.

An elegant nose, woody, honey, caramel, acidulous point, precious wood, passionFlavorful mouth, exotic fruit coated with honey and wood, light bitter almond, then new kick of exoticism with a beautiful lengthNugget!

For me, the reference of the 95 EMB. Brutal device.

This shows once again what is possible with rums from MM when tropical maturation is involved. The nose is incredibly cool and is by far my favorite here. Highly intense and concentrated, you first encounter a lot of glue and solvents followed by all kinds of fruit. Molasses, caramel and spice follow very warmly. This is really incredibly complex! In the mouth, it is unfortunately a little unrelaxed, the alcohol is very noticeable. I also don't quite like the strong menthol here. All in all, however, it is very successful

A truly complex yet balanced rum from Jamaica. Spicy and herbal notes are dominant here, both on the nose and in the taste. The finish is relatively bitter and long-lasting. A clear recommendation.

07-11-2025 Tasted again. It continues to be a bomb of flavors, wonderfully complex, and you always taste something new. ================== What a delicious rum. This is one to savor. Initially in the glass, the aroma is strong and complex, with fruits like pineapple, banana, and raspberry coming through beautifully. Menthol and woody notes. A very full aroma. I let it sit in the glass for a long time. This allowed the floral notes to gradually emerge. Fruits like banana then come to the forefront. Deliciously warm on the palate, the alcohol well-integrated. Tea and dark chocolate with delicious fruity notes then emerge. Rich in tannins and a hint of leather. The finish is delicious, complex, and full at the same time. The fruity flavor lingers wonderfully. A touch dry and woody. A truly delicious, complex, and full-bodied rum. Highly recommended!

On the nose: Minty notes, earthy notes, light glue notes, pencil shaving notes, woody notes, light coconut notes. Roasted. Light dried fruit notes. Taste: Minty notes, black tea notes, woody notes and leather notes at first. Then palate evolves from light licorice/anise notes, blackcurrants to espresso and light dark chocolate notes. Nice complexity as you just hold the rum in your mouth and let the palate evolve. Finish: Dry with black tea notes, light minty and menthol notes. Palate then evolves to coffee, woody and cocoa notes. Long finish. I really liked this rums ability to evolve from nice typical EMB notes towards coffee and cocoa notes.

A real pleasure! Very intense and complex with a smooth long finish! Very good!

Jamaica without Hampden Tasting: without words - simply a brilliant rum. Probably the best rum tonight with lots of tropical fruit, but also coconut, wood, mint and glue. Alcohol could not be better integrated
Review by Buddudharma
For me, one of the best 95s. The typical notes are balanced and are accompanied by a great natural sweetness that many comparable bottlings lack. A long finish and good alcohol integration round off the overall picture. Exquisite!

I am in love with shock. Blind, I would have bet an arm on TDL. This beautiful mint/tea note is simply my absolute favorite. The perfectly integrated alcohol helps me to like not only the nose, but everything from start to finish. The finish lacks the bitterness that usually keeps me away from absolute top notes.

How can apricot brandy be distilled out of sugar cane? Fantastic stuff, extremely fruity with all varieties of apricots and a mouthwatering honey like sweetness. A bit too one dimensional for even more points. 😋😋😋

Very nice profile on the nose. An absolute bomb on the palate.
Review by Carl-Johan Thulin
Tasted this at the restaurant Cane Rum Society. Balanced, complex, fantastically good.
Review by mick
What a rum, the nose doesn't anticipate what comes next, more astringent than the 1997 EMB on the attack, it takes hold of your mouth and then settles in quietly, what depth, and it lasts! certainly one of the 2 kings of Jamaican old outside hampden with the 1997 emb, what can I say about the integration of alcohol, this rum tends quite a bit towards trinidad with its menthol and woodiness close to perfection.
Review by Steve Obwexer
Nose very pleasant, fruity and light. In the mouth it explodes with wood and red fruit essence
Review by JFehr
Alcohol well integrated. On the nose, a bit of unripe pear and banana juice as well as glue. On the palate, lots of wood, a nice mouthfeel, loads of apricot and mint. In the long finish, a bit of herbal bitterness, mint again and dried apricot. Awesome stuff

Retasting it tonight, it still is an absolute monster. This is intense above anything and still a superb EMB, this is the lucky cask of the 1995s I love everything about this. This is a defining rum for its class. Try it
