Velier Clarendon Warren Khong Villa Paradisetto EMB 1995

Near-universal love here, with tasters calling it a benchmark 95 EMB. Expect glue and menthol on the nose, then a wave of banana, apricot and tropical fruit meeting old oak, black tea, dark chocolate and licorice. Bone-dry, tannic, deeply complex. The only real gripe: at 67% the alcohol turns up for a few, and one reviewer found it slightly one-dimensional.

Velier has been a forerunner with this powerful, authentic Clarendon with a very deep, complex aromatic spectrum. The nose is extremely fruity: banana, pineapple, coconut, cherry, raspberry and dried fruit put on a show of great roundness. This is followed by woody notes concentrated on oak, tobacco and medicinal notes on glue, varnish and a light dose of esters. The profile that emerges is very intense and balanced. The attack on the palate is like a wild beast: raw, dry and very tannic, we find notes of leather, very intense oak, but also dark chocolate, coffee and spices (pepper, licorice, aniseed) that accentuate the bitterness. Exotic fruits are more succinct, touched by notes of tobacco, black tea and menthol. Alcohol is superbly integrated into this very elaborate profile. The finish is very long, contrasted by the power of menthol, the tannin of wood and leather, the bitterness of cocoa, coffee and spices, but also by that warmth in the mouth that evokes roasted, smoky notes. Fruit binds it all together with a touch of sweetness. An extreme profile, deep and exciting, which is what Clarendon is known for.

This shows once again what is possible with rums from MM when tropical maturation is involved. The nose is incredibly cool and is by far my favorite here. Highly intense and concentrated, you first encounter a lot of glue and solvents followed by all kinds of fruit. Molasses, caramel and spice follow very warmly. This is really incredibly complex! In the mouth, it is unfortunately a little unrelaxed, the alcohol is very noticeable. I also don't quite like the strong menthol here. All in all, however, it is very successful

Insanely ripe and beautiful nose. Less solvent than the 1997, iodine, salty and spice coming from the barrel. Very warm, full and interesting. And then banana bread, mint and varnish. Complex! A stunner in the mouth! A little more wood and spice. Finish in the same direction. Dust-dry. Great rum! Megacomplex, rough edges. Tasted together with the 1997. This one has more solvent, more fruit and much less wood maturity. This one is more solid!

what's this freaky stuff please?! 🌿🇯🇲Mint and menthol and allspice throughout, dark after eight chocolate, lychee and apricot and other "floral" fruits, then lots of tannins and barrel notes in an endless comeback of intense mentholated black tea with massive mint and subtle cocoa. Madness in addition to how 24y tropical and 67% are just almost not felt...😍🙏Blind I would have pushed this to TDL 🤤🤘🇯🇲🌿🌿🌿

What a rum, the nose doesn't anticipate what comes next, more astringent than the 1997 EMB on the attack, it takes hold of your mouth and then settles in quietly, what depth, and it lasts! certainly one of the 2 kings of Jamaican old outside hampden with the 1997 emb, what can I say about the integration of alcohol, this rum tends quite a bit towards trinidad with its menthol and woodiness close to perfection.

I want a bottle 🤤

This is a rum with a very nice nose to finish an overall great rum. The nose is fruity with barrel and some earthy notes. The palate is well balanced and complex with a lot of fruit in the front and oak to follow. In the back i find tannins, caramel, anise and coffee. The finish is long with a nice mix of oak, coffee, licorice and tannins.

In comparison today two EMBs from Velier. RX432 (Warren Khong 1995) and RX674 (Guiseppe Begoni 1997) are both very complex and good. In comparison, I think that the 1997 vintage is a little ahead here. But both are excellent in my opinion, although they are different in taste, which is very fascinating.
