The strangest thing here is the nose — glue, solvent, mushrooms, hay, even a savoury truffle-and-garlic note that stops a few tasters cold. Push past it and the palate is a different animal: ripe and funky, overripe banana, pineapple, a touch of caramel and wood, with the 58% running hot. Give it ten minutes' air and it rounds right out. A South African pot-still cane-juice rum with a real identity.

#5241 12.04.2025 Running some samples at home while relaxing a bit. Nose Intense, glue, fruits, light rubber, light minerals, faint caramel, vegetal. Palate Medium intense, light wood, light citrus, orange, light vegetal, tannins, light bitter, earthy, light caramel, spice, light rubber, light mineral. Finish Medium to long, light wood, faint roasted, fruits, light citrus, light apple, light rubber. Empty glass Faint rubber, apple, lemon, light iodine, tannins.

On the nose a scent different from usual, I wouldn't know how to define it... almost rancid. The taste is definitely better but still not to my liking with lots of esters, wood and spices. Maybe I didn't get it, or rather I didn't want to.

The Mhoba standard 101 is a surprising rum. In many ways it reminds one of a Jamaican. The nose is dominated by esters, solvents and a curious meaty smell. On the palate the esters also dominate. The finish is medium to long and relatively complex.

Mhoba is one of those rums with an original, unique and surprising profile. This rum is no exception: notes on the nose of undergrowth and mushrooms (not available in flavors of the application?) of earth and vegetal, spices and tropical fruits that mix with the more medicated, phenolic and chemical flavors that this rum usually offers. On the palate, the rum completely changes its profile, moving towards something more fruity (cherry, grape, apple, banana and citrus among others) with a floral, spicy and vanilla touch. The finish is very long, turning to fruity, vegetal and spicy notes. Intense and subtle at the same time, aromatic, greedy, very round and of a great complexity, this rum is a frank success.

On the nose, a very unexpected mix of... pretty much everything? First sweet fruits, but then quickly overshadowed by solvent and glue. Behind that, something savory. On the palate, comparatively simple. Here comes the 'aged' part through.

To quote my wife: "Yuck, it smells like garlic"😀 This rum is one of the few that tastes better than it smells. I've had several samples from Mhoba and was quite impressed, but this one is not for me. The nose says: Don't drink this! Indefinable, somehow really like garlic, mold and mushrooms, slight wood too. Surprisingly better on the palate. Light sweetness, fruity, cask, umami, slightly metallic and spicy. More than a low "Good" is not possible though.

Strong and aromatic, it shows an intense mix of fruits, solvents and esters on the nose – aromas that are powerfully found again on the palate. Overall great value for money, I liked it.

Wow, this is exciting stuff! In the nose it reminds me first of a Jamaican, quite with esters but not High-Ester full throttle. In the mouth then the opposite, here the rum plays piano on the tongue and presses all the keys at once. Funky, fruity, medicinal, well amplified by the high and also quite present alcohol. Fun, but also requires attention and calm. Again discovered an exciting corner of the rum world, which I like very much!

Really funny, you can clearly identify the blended rums, with the punch of the high esters on one side and the caramel and wood from the glass cask. Maybe a bit unrefined, but definitely funny to drink

When I first met this rum, it immediately captivated me with its complexity. Great bottle and you can taste the agriculture in every sip. The smell and taste of this rum stick in your memory for a long time. Lots of varnish. Rotten bananas. Pineapple. Beautiful.

Very particular drink but with great character. A powerful rum with a nose loaded with fruit, solvents and esters that we then find on the palate as well. It is not exactly a daily dram. It is quite a challenging drink that also requires some familiarity with overpowering rums to be appreciated. In any case, it is a bottle that I would recommend!

This is a well composed mix between a round and sweet molasses rum and a high ester unaged Jamaican. Note that those are not facts but a description of my tasting. The alcohol is well integrated. This is a wonderful rum that seems to create a little niche for itself.

A completely crazy rum. A very very strong nose. Hay / truffles. Crazy and unique. 30 minutes rest in the glass. We taste. The alcohol is not fully integrated, "it bites" for a 58°, you'd give it 10 more! You find meat, hay, truffle. The finish is quite short for a rum that hits you so hard just before. A unique rum. Not the best, but a real identity, a real character. Like rivière du mat can be for example. The bottle will probably last me a long time: it's not a glug-glug rum. But I think I'll have another right after.

An amazing nose, full of banana, esters, opening little by little. Glue, varnish, mushrooms. The palate is very sharp, quite oily, rotten ripe fruits, soft and warm in the throat. Also a roasted side. Very good, made me discover Mhoba and its promises. Even better once the bottle has been open for a while...
