Diamond (Versailles) S.B.S Guyana 2003

Smoky oak, graphite and pipe tobacco lead here, with vanilla, anise and a maple-syrup edge from what tasters spot as a sweet-wine (Marsala) finish. A single wooden pot still Versailles at cask strength, but drinkers call it rounder and milder than the 62.8% suggests. The recurring gripe: a touch too sweet on the nose for a Diamond, with metallic notes some found distracting.

Woody, dry Guyana with a sweet-wine finish Well liked overall — dry, woody and warming with tobacco and vanilla. Several felt the sweet-wine finish and a slight metallic edge kept it from feeling fully balanced.

A maturation in sweet wine barrels is always such a thing... can make a mediocre rum better, but for me it is mostly nix. Nose: spicy, woody, fruity and sweetish. It comes through right away, the Marsala finish. Behind the sweetness, which is already a tad too much for me, many flavors come through. Lovely cherry wood, lightly toasted, Marashino cherry, dried apricot, pipe tobacco with vanilla, strong maple syrup. Palate: much rounder than expected. Strong and spicy, woody and toasty without being unpleasantly bitter. Slightly salty with nutmeg. The finish mellows out the Diamond nicely. Overall I don't think it's bad, nose a bit too sweet, palate pleasantly round. ABV fits very well.

To me, the alcohol seems only suboptimally integrated. Update 24.06.2022:Today, the rum still seems to me a bit too brute on the palate, but for that I taste no annoying finish, certainly not sweet wine, but just, as it should be, graphite (pencil shavings).A rum with dry charm and character.Because I tasted the RX1378 in parallel, I held that on the palate stubbornly for this SBS (keyword "heavy sweetness") . 🥴🙈 One may convict me of the grandiose error! 🙏😉

In the nose still relatively sweet, on the palate then dominated by spices and metallic notes. Good, but not completely convincing and not fully balanced in taste in my opinion.

Avg Rating 8.4/10 over 1,600 Rums

Guyana is the last home of the wooden still, and the only rum country where the place on the label is almost never the place the rum was made. Its rum, called Demerara after the river, went from 109 distilleries to one, and the estates that closed live on as marks: codes for a recipe, not for a machine. Reading them is the whole skill.
