People rate this highly but keep circling the same catch: at 69.5% the alcohol runs hot and isn't perfectly tucked in, so several tasters call it "biestig" and a bit too fierce. Give it hours of air and the classic Caroni picture appears — tar, rubber, machine oil, tropical stewed fruit and burnt sugar. Fully there, just not quite top-tier among the Employees.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: For me, this falls somewhat short of the first employees, as Sarge & Co. are much more convincing. But mind you, we are talking about criticism at the highest level. The rating remains the same - undoubtedly a very good rum, but even that is clearly no longer enough for the top league among the Velier Caronis. The 1998 Vintage is in the extended top circle.

A sample tasted after the Caroni Velier 1983 52%. Totally different. Thanks Thomas for the sample. Here is a “real” Caroni as expected, even stronger than expected. A powerful nose with incense, mechanic workshop, fruits, and cold ash. An intense and concentrated palate with mainly fruits and a finish dominated by a noble bitterness. A Caroni for lovers of extreme rums. Retasted with oxidation and it’s even better, more mysterious. The empty glass tells a whole story of an old church with a tropical fruit market in front. Fascinating!

21.02.2026 Retasting this nice rum in my new glasses I bought in Nürnberg. ------------- This was the lowest scoring one of the evening, though still a very good rum! All the Caroni notes are there with added roasted notes, light fruit and vanilla. In the back i find coffee and leather.

Tasted together with Leo Tomczak at the 11th GRF. A very good rum with everything that makes a Caroni, found it super balanced. The rum Nation Caroni 1998 23y (RX11047) tasted at the same time didn't stand a chance.

Yesterday I had the unique opportunity to compare this rum with other 98ers, including the Paradise #2. Compared to the Paradise, this one is completely different, very brutal with a high alcohol content that's not perfectly integrated, it softens over time, nice menthol notes that remind me of EMB95!

A heavyweight Caroni for guaranteed sensations. The nose starts out dirty and powerful, with tar and tires, then becomes more fragrant, with incense, roasted wood, smoky notes, tobacco, floral notes and sweet spices (chili, vanilla, licorice). Fruits rise to a crescendo with dried fruits and then tropical fruits. An intensely aromatic profile. A powerful attack on the palate, dominated by a variety of empyreumatic notes: tar, rubber, smoky notes, incense and roasted oak leave their mark on the palate. Sweet spices, dark chocolate, the caramel sweetness typical of Caronis from recent vintages, and fruit (raisins and exotic fruits) create a rum that is complete, dry and yet round. The alcohol is superbly integrated. The finish is long, dry and bitter, turning to coffee, dark chocolate, licorice and leather. Roasted oak, spices, caramel and dried fruit continue the profile, but with a certain elegance. A Caroni in all its splendor, like an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Wow very boozy this one! A powerful nose with fruits, oak, some smoke and machine oils. On the palate it's quite alcoholic, very bitey! Oak, fruits, oil, rubber, tar, roasted. A long finish It's still a great Caroni but very powerful, maybe too extreme for me to give top marks

Classic 1998 profile. Nose is quite dirty and animal with a lot of tar but gets more balanced with time. Palate is more fruity, round and floral but keeps this animal DNA from the nose. A strong release. I just miss the extra thing to give more than 90 points as for Ramgobie for instance.

Tasted today together with Mrs. Zabo. All in all, a very good representative of the '98 vintage. It also harmonized perfectly with a cigar. Unfortunately, however, it can't quite keep up with other Caroni representatives, as it's a little too alcoholic for me even after a longer period of rest in the glass. But that's complaining at a high level

Und zum Tagesabschluss einen geilen Caroni, so gefällt mir das. Die typischen Caroni-Marker sind auch hier erkennbar. Vor allem Teer, Gummi und Leder sind erkennbar, aber auch Vanille und Karamell kann man schmecken.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

In my opinion one of the few Caroni expressions that didn't convince me! Not very interesting throughout the tasting, always more or less the same aromatic palette and sometimes leaves some bitter notes that I don't like!

Very nice 98 Caroni nose of rubber, mango and vanilla, slightly floral and fruity, smoky, spicy and dirty. On the palate, the alcohol is unfortunately quite dominant and not ideally integrated. Raisin, caramel, burnt rubber and tar, banana split, milk chocolate and ladyfingers soaked in espresso and sprinkled with caramel. Delicious but for me far from the Champions League, especially because the alcohol is too dominant and it is simply too "beastly".

Color: Chestnut Smell: Smells fruity like plum in Madeira, raisins and chocolate. Also alcoholic and creamy. Taste: Sweet in the mouth, fruity and alcoholic sharp with aromas of caraway and anise. Extremely strong, intense and full-bodied when swallowing. Super tasty, complex, spicy, rum-grape-nut chocolate, fudge and toffee. Finish: Long Warms from deep inside. Slightly bitter, dry, woody with ginger. 90 points

A brutal Caroni thanks to the high ABV. Nicely dirty, but also tropical fruits and burnt sugar. The high alcohol content provides an almost endless finish, but even for me, after 1 hour of resting, it’s a bit too strong.

Needs at least 2 hours of air so that the initial alcohol note disappears, then it's a bomb! Typical dirty Caroni notes, but also fruity and spicy/toasty. Very harmonious and complex! I've never had this sugarcane note in any other Caroni before.

Very nice. Caroni expressivity in the nose. Tar, dried fruits, a bit of smoke. Strong attack, but still engaging. Very long finale. In the end, great, but a tad below other employees that I have tried at this point 😉 Tried again - really engaging and strong. Real Caroni dirty feel - but still behind other tried.

Third employee of the evening. The aroma is again rather technical although a little later something sweet appears that I can't identify. ( edit. incense). Dried fruit, wood, hints of vanilla and a long finish. Again a rather sweet profile. Svincany caroni tasting 19.12.2024

I was a bit disappointed when I first tried it... I made a mistake. I've to admit it. This rum needs time, a lot of time to breath and open up and also to make you travel through different place Caroni is known for, dirty oil, gaz, but also fruity, with sweet tropical stewed fruits, generous cake... Take this Caroni as a trip in the distillery, take your time don't rush, smell it and drink slow, you will be highly rewarded. Now my bottle is half empty, opened for months and the rum became really stellar !!!

Once the alcohol has settled a bit, a very decent 98 emerges. Only the finish is unfortunately a bit unspectacular compared to other Caronis.
