Ultra expressive rum with typical Caroni profile from 1996 vintage. Perfect balance between round and dirty notes with some candied tropical fruits. Alcohol integration is perfect. An absolute monster and my favorite rum of all time together with its brother 1992 FP 💘

1996 Veliers are always a guarantee for good caronis, and this is no exception. Trepasser comes along quite brute. Apart from the typical rubber tar notes, there is some vanilla and fruit. Oxidation helps this rum extremely.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Very aromatic and intense, the high alcohol adds punch but also expressiveness. Lots of vanilla melt on the palate and finish. Excellent 1996 Caroni, although not quite at the top of the vintage.

19.07.2025 Retasting at the Nordlichter Treffen. ----------------- This is a very, very good Caroni. As soon as the bottle is opened you know this is a Caroni. Heavy on wood and fruity at the same time and the of course the rubber and tar with spices. Mouthwatering just nosing it. The palate is complex and well balanced. The ABV is very well integrated on top of that. Again heavy on the wood with fruit, spice and again the lovely rubber and tar with light burnt sugar and a hint of leather. The finish is VERY long with wood, rubber, tar, spices and raisins. The cost of this bottle tody is just out of bounds, none the less a super good Caroni.

In the glass it takes times an eternity, two hours of ventilation is not wrong there.A wonderful nose, beautiful dried fruit. The classic Caroni vibe (burnt tar, rubber) is not quite as pronounced and unexpectedly (70%) the nose is somewhat restrained.In the mouth then brutally the fist, but very, very good. In the finish then still spoils the full load of spices.Beautiful Caroni to enjoy and then freshen up.

Day 11 of the Samples de luxe calendar. A rum whose bottle has been opened and immediately put into mignonettes. No oxygenation, which explains the virtual absence of Caroni markers. Beyond the sting of alcohol, a very sweet nose with candy sugar, leather and wood. The same sensation is found on the palate. The alcohol is very well integrated (impossible to imagine 70.1%) and the aromas arrive immediately afterwards. Incense, smoke, old leather and wood. I imagine a centuries-old church with wooden pews and weathered leather cushions. Outside, it's the city with its traffic and hints of tar. The finish is splendidly long. Deep, broad aromas. My money was on a very old Demerara. Must be tasted again with oxidation. Tasted again and it seems even better.

Wow, intense Caroni. But very very tasty. The 70% are so well integrated. Dirty, fruity with rubber and leather, just as it should be. Menthol and cassis, molasses syrup. I really enjoy drinking it.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

On aeration, it becomes smoky, dirty, rubber is obvious, the wood is toasted, meaty, notes like chocolate, vanilla join, molasses is earthy, citrus fruits arise. 9:On the palate, the attack is intense, slightly alcoholic, with industrial notes like tar, rubber, petrol, some menthol, dirty, concentrated, creamy with toasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, nuts, espresso, slightly burnt, spicy with anise, allspice, vanilla, black pepper, fruity with dried, tropical and citrus fruits, a bit astringent. 9,1:The finish is long, dry&tannic, balanced, industrial with rubber and tar, petrol hints, dirty, fruity with dried, citrus fruits, oak is toasted with milk, dark chocolate, nuts, slightly burnt, spicy with vanilla, anise, cinnamon and molasses earthy, minty, dark with licorice. A Caroni that acts as a heavyweight in its category. The nose is perfectly controlled, oscillating between the empyreumatic and dirty notes of Caroni on one side (tar, rubber, smoky notes, menthol, tobacco, leather), the fruity notes (exotic fruits, mango, dried fruits with raisin) and woody notes on the other. Aeration brings out shimmering spices (vanilla, pepper) and gourmand notes of almond, coffee, caramel and a pastry touch. An olfactory profile of great depth and beautiful complexity. The attack on the palate is an epic saga, both very intense and very tasty. The alcohol is certainly present, but extremely well integrated for 70.1%. We find tar, rubber, old leather and smoky notes, but also a heavy, powerful but very well blended woodiness that coats the palate, accompanied by spicy and warm notes, milk chocolate, espresso coffee as well as notes of nuts and tobacco. The fruits are practically absent, but caramel and a menthol veil give roundness to the profile towards the end of the palate. A dantesque rum that offers an extraordinary tasting experience. The finish is extremely long, warm, dry but just as delicious and harmonious. The dirty and empyreumatic side resurges with the intense woodiness, leather and roasted notes carried by coffee, chocolate and nuts. We also find some medicinal notes, tobacco and menthol playing hide and seek. Spices, caramel and a hint of toffee confer gourmandise and depth to this extreme profile. Although it should be drunk sparingly, it is a superb Caroni in every respect and a perfect representative of its vintage.

For caroni, 1996 was perhaps the year where the best rums came out! And this trespassers is confirmation of that! Notwithstanding its high grade and all integrated to perfection! The typical tar/petrol/caoutch note is present but not excessive and blends with all the other flavors! An amazing rum!

Insanely wicked Caroni. A 96 as it is written in the book. Dirty, spicy, heavy and almost numbs the tongue. Passion fruit, guava, mint, fresh rubber tires, fresh road tar and cinnamon, milk chocolate and black pepper. Everything on the leather couch. Very tasty!

Wow, this is brutal when first sipped! A mouth full of spices straight up. Then followed by restrained Caroni notes, rubber,tar and the like. I'm getting some fruits, as well as vanilla! I really like it, hits like a hammer. A restrained nose with a long finish.

A wonderful and unmistakable Caroni. Surprisingly restrained on the nose, but typically Caroni with tar and rubber. Complemented by some vanilla, almond and coffee. The restraint then subsides in the incredibly strong taste with lots of rubber and tar. Then pepper, coffee and chocolate are added. Nevertheless, the alcohol is perfectly integrated. It lingers on the palate for a long time. Great liquid gold or tar.

Raise your hands :) Once again, a nice representative from 1996. It’s not top-notch because, for my taste, it has a bit too much sharpness. Still tasty. The 70% ABV gives a long, warm finish. Tried it again and it scores a few points higher. It needs some time in the glass. The complexity is amazing, and compared to many other bottles from that vintage, it’s also a bit more affordable.

Svincany caroni tasting 19.12.2024 I also bought a bottle later. It's one of the more iconic carones for me just because of the 70% abv - not too common. Wonderful nose where the fruit and technique blend, diluting the intense, full and complex flavours. Wow!

Second tasting, I re-consider my rating, up from 8.5 to 8.8. mmmh…somehow a well balanced rum but the abv level doesn’t help, To much alcohol that’s suppressing the flavors. Despite it appears well balanced it is not a very complex rum. Finish is very long but again it’s the adstringent feeling as a result of the alcohol but no flavors dominate the finish. Is there too much hype around Caroni? And we start tasting things that we believe we have to taste?

In the glass and tasted immediately, this is truly an explosion in the mouth. A very bold, explosive, full-bodied Caroni. On the nose, delicious coffee, menthol, complex, and slightly fruity. Letting it breathe longer in the glass makes it more pleasant on the nose. The sweetness comes more to the fore in combination with tar/leather Caroni notes. I really let this rum rest in the glass for a long time. A small sip each time to experience what time in the glass does to this powerhouse. Strong espresso, with fruity notes, menthol, leather, mint, and pepper. Alcohol integration is perfect, as is the interplay of all the flavor notes. Simply a monster of a Caroni.

I was very excited to try this famous Caroni. It opens first on burnt sugar for me, and despite the aromas of tar, fruits, leather and wood, it shines by a very good balance between sweetness and dryness. It doesn't feel like 70+ degrees, very good Caroni.

Incredible how well the 70% are integrated. Dominated by wood and vanilla notes, but the expected Caronino notes are somewhat missing for me, or are not dominant enough, at most a little nail polish and polish in the nose.

Here I have a very characterful and also intense Caroni in the glass. On Joachim's recommendation to leave it in the glass for a while, it now had three hours to unfold its aromas in the open glass. The nose is nicely strong and typical for Caroni. Tar, wood, vanilla, glue, menthol, tropical fruits, coffee, and almond pastry. Raisins, allspice, and nice smoky notes are added. On the palate, it is then extremely spicy and strong, even though the 70% is well integrated. Wood, vanilla, tar, leather, fruits, espresso, rubber, great meaty and roasted aromas lead over to milk chocolate, mint, and black pepper. Very complex and mouth-filling. The long finish is very present and offers, beyond the flavors of the palate, also cinnamon, anise, and pleasant nutty tones. This Caroni is very well made, although this drinking strength is not quite my thing. Nevertheless, I want to give a clear recommendation. Thanks to @Skyfly for the great sample 😊

What a delicious smell. At first very fruity and sweetish, slightly burnt. After some time in the glass, alongside the tropical fruits, you also get coffee, spices, and a slight alcoholic sting if you smell too deeply into the glass :D In the mouth, then, it’s boldly spicy, the fruit moves into the background, powerful and astringent, woody and smoky, continuing until a slight sharpness kicks in for the long finish. Coffee, nuts, and wood linger on the tongue for a long time. The 70% ABV is perfectly integrated. Top!

Powerful 96 Caroni with plenty of oomph and the typical heavy sweetness. A great mix of vanilla, tar, menthol, some rubber, dried fruit (apricot, raisin) as well as tropical fruit (guava, mango, passion fruit) and lots of spice with cinnamon, pepper and allspice. Can stand a little longer and also tolerates a drop of water.

The nose: the flowing caramel gives way to a very pronounced woodiness, like an old piece of furniture forgotten at an antique dealer's. The smoky side is incredible, with aromas of burnt sugar and tobacco. There is also very aged leather. The vanilla is extremely indulgent throughout. With every sniff, you sense changing scents and it’s amazingly complex. The petroleum and hydrocarbons typical of the distillery are there but not overpowering. They fade quickly to reveal a basket of tropical fruits, especially ripe pineapple. Right after, there’s bitter cocoa, 85% dark chocolate. Just when I thought it was over, it’s wood wax, like Pliz or O’Cedar, that my mother used on our furniture, which takes me back to my childhood. What a crazy thing! Nothing burns the nose and you travel back in time with lots of childhood memories with this rum. You mentally prepare for the 70.1% ABV for the mouth. And... nothing! No burn at all! It’s warming and aromatic but I’ve known rums at 50% that were more aggressive. Again, the complexity is insane. Everything is wrapped in a comforting roundness. Loads of caramel, vanilla too. It’s like the pastry side of a far breton cake, with this rum very rich in the mouth, very powerful in taste. The tobacco and leather are pronounced, reminding us of the age of the blend. The burnt wood, with its smokiness, adds voice and exquisite refinement. Strangely, very few dirty markers in the mouth, except again that beeswax for furniture. The exotic fruits are very soft in the background on the palate, with roasted pineapple. There’s also a floral side that comes through at one point but is hard to pinpoint. The finish leaves a surprisingly fresh sensation. The finale is long and languorous, without being endless. You feel an oily film that stays on the tongue and palate. The woodiness of the cask takes us again to the hold of a ship, where exotic spices are stored.

A really intense Caroni that, alongside the typical dirty aromas, shows pleasant tropical fruits, various coffee notes, and mint. At first, it’s quite alcoholic on the palate but becomes more approachable the longer you let it breathe.

Initially quite reserved on the nose, it really goes full throttle on the palate. Very dirty and intense, just as you imagine a good Caroni. The high alcohol content is by no means overwhelming! Water greatly extends the finish!

Imaginative rum that has everything you would expect from a Caroni. It is very complex and unfolds an incredibly big bang on the tongue, the nose already gives you an idea of what to expect. A full Caroni profile, dense aromas of tar, leather and wood. In addition, soft influences such as vanilla and dark fruit without being too sweet. Edgy, dirty notes as you would expect and a round, full overall impression. Great bottling!

Sample from the RhumAuction stand at the GRF. Thanks for that. Less dirty on the nose than other Caronis, but nicely combined with lots of vanilla and barrel influence and plenty of glue. On the palate, Caroni is much more apparent. While you could still push this rum in the direction of "Demeroni" or dirty Foursquare when smelling it, it's a clear thing on the palate. Full Caroni power ahead. Great piece.

There's the good fuel. A very nicely balanced Caroni that is very concentrated. The high alcohol content doesn't interfere at all. Caramel popcorn on the nose with lots of fruit and a little workshop. Lots of caramel with vanilla on the palate. The dirty notes are subtle, but there. Super dry on the finish. Very nice bottling.
