The surprise here is a cool menthol streak cutting through the usual Caroni grime. Underneath it's classic closed-distillery stuff: tar, rubber, leather, oak and burnt caramel, with tropical fruit peeking out. Part of the four-cask 1997 set from S.B.S — most tasters rank #193 at or near the top. At 62.3% it runs hot, so a few drops of water help.

The famous S.B.S. single cask tasting. Cask # 193. The best nose of the four, deep and balanced between fruity aromas and machine shop notes. The palate is disappointing, with clashed aromas and not-so-well-integrated alcohol. The finish is long but a little weak compared with the other 3. Best of the 4 on an empty glass.

Also very tasty rum from this set... for me the whole set is still surprisingly cheap or less overpriced than other comparable (or worse) Caronis. The cask 193 is for me on par with or just behind 190, depending on the day.

The comparison is between 4 Caronis Single Cask 1997 from SBS. This Caroni stands out with a profile that's a little different from the other Single Cask. The nose is fresher, with a subtle hint of menthol to break up the dirty, empyreumatic profile. Spices and tropical fruits are present, accompanied by caramel and burnt sugar for a touch of sweetness. A complete and original nose. The profile changes on the palate. The woodiness is more present, with a tannic edge that dries out the palate, but paradoxically there's quite a bit of sweetness on the caramel and spices (vanilla). Rubber, tar and fruit are much more subdued. The alcohol could be a little better integrated. The finish is rather long and shifting. Salted caramel intrudes through spices (chili, pepper), leather, wood and smoky notes. Tobacco, tar and rubber are also present. If the profile loses complexity and depth compared to neighboring casks, this Caroni has the merit of offering a different experience with its more fanciful aromas and flavors.

Der Rum ist Teil eines Sets: Fass 53, Fass 190, Fass 193 und Fass 216. Bei diesem ist der Alkohol nicht sonderlich gut eingebunden und ein paar Tröpfchen Wasser tun ihm sehr gut, da er sonst diesen "Push in your Face" Effekt hat. Wobei ich das bei diesem gerade mag. Für das was das Set kostet bzw. mal früher gekostet hat, ist es ein absolut Topp PLV. Da können sich manch neuere Abfüllungen mal über ihren Preis nachdenken. Werde hier nochmal nachlegen!

My first Caroni and I'm rather positively impressed. Rubber is present in this cask 193, but this rum reminds me more of an Agricole XO. Caramel, leather, earthy, woody, fruits and rubber. On the palate, bitter, woody and sharp, definitely not an easy drink, but you can tell there's high complexity as it is also sweet and floral at the same time. The finish is increasingly smoky (possibly tar) and again very complex.

Caroni, the best there is among rums. Nose woody and leather. On the palate then additionally a nice barrel taste. Relatively woody, but not too much and really tasty. Another top bottling from S.B.S.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the height of its glory a rum that was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too distinctive and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Part of a set with four different Caronis, all solid and at a good level without extreme outliers. Cask #193 stands out as the best among them. Overall good quality with typical notes and balanced.

Das Fass 193 ist wieder reichhaltig in der Nase und etwas mehr in Richtung Erdig und Holzig. Fass 190 hat im Vergleich weitaus mehr fruchtige und florale Noten. Am Gaumen kommt eine kräftige Würze durch Holz, Leder, Tabak und Teer. Dann Fassnoten, Karamell und getrocknete Früchte gefolgt von etwas Grapefruit und Pfeffer. Der recht lange Abgang zeichnet sich durch würzige Holznoten, Tabak, Vanille und Leder aus. Fast zeitgleich kommen Erde, Teer und die rauchigen Töne aus der Nase hinzu. Lakritze und tropische Früchte begleiten die Aromenvielfalt. Nach einer längeren Zeit im Glas wird die Nase noch etwas fruchtiger und zamer. Das PL-Verhältnis ist hier wieder absolut in Ordnung.

This rum is part of a four cask selection set. Cask 53, cask 190, cask 193 and cask 216. This particular one definitely needs a few drops of water, which will release a lot of flawours and also reduce the alcohol burn.

Price-performance ratio is unbeatable with the nasty SBS Box. Cask 193 is a tasty Caroni for beginners, with all the typical notes. Now I'm curious about the other three.

One of my first Caroni. Over time, I've kept lowering the rating, probably because I now know other/better Caronis. Still a good one though... nicely dry, with a slight smoky note. And of course some dirty notes... albeit just a little.

A pleasant cigar note at the end, after brushing your teeth, as if a tar machine rolled it on oak wheels. Pleasantly complex and balanced. Better than cask 190 from this series.

Geruch: Riecht zu Beginn nach Schuhcreme und Möbelpolitur. Der Alkohol ist natürlich deutlich wahrnehmbar. Aromen von Edelhölzern, Leder, tropischen Früchten (Ananas, Banane), Honig, Vanille, Karamell und gebrannter Zucker. Sehr lecker. Geschmack: Kräftig und intensiv.. Schmeckt süß nach Honig und tropischen Früchten. Holz, Karamell und gebrannte Mandeln. Abgang: Lang Die Aromen aus dem Geschmack setzen sich fort. Im Nachgeschmack holzig und trocken mit etwas Asche.

SBS – Caroni HTR 1997 – 63% Heading to Trinidad and Tobago, the legendary Caroni distillery (RIP 💀). Aged 18 years, bottled cask strength at 63% (Cask 190). 👃 Nose: pure Caroni juice — dirty, tar, tires, glue, fruity cherry. 👅 Palate: still Caroni, devilishly charming and fruity on a background of rubber and burnt caramel. ➡️ My opinion: despite the pleasure, personal preference for the TBRC 1997.

2nd caroni for me, so there's not much to compare it with. But the taste of rubber led me straight to this distillery on a blind taste test. The almost peaty smokiness made me hesitate with a whisky.

I had these recently been poured blind, and i do not remember this menthol aroma throughout it all. Again, really an interesting cask after all. I like this a little less than two of the other but they are still pretty good.
