The "25 years" on the label sets you up for something grand, but this drinks soft and sweet more than deep. Caramel, vanilla and milk chocolate lead, with raisin underneath and a light peppery bite in the finish. It's heavier and a touch drier than the younger Maltecos, which one taster calls a bridge toward more complex rums — but at 40% it stays gentle throughout.

This is a rather sweet rum with a short chocolate finish. A good rum for beginners in my mind. For the price tag very good.

Malteco Tasting (14, 20, 25 years) The smell is typical Malteco vanilla and caramel. Pastry, milk chocolate and wood complement it. On the palate, the same applies: you get what you smell. Vanilla (vanilla crescents), caramel, honey and milk chocolate. It is pleasantly mild and soft. Slight sharpness reminiscent of pepperoni. The body is clearly stronger and more complex than the other two. Less sweet than the 20 but sweeter than the 15. He differs clearly from the other two, which can be described more as typical dessert rums. I would see him as a bridge builder to more complex rums.

A sweet entry-level rum. Notes of caramel and chocolate on the palate. A slight spiciness is added on the finish. It is somewhat riper and heavier than its younger brothers. All in all, it is worth the money.
