You can tell that Foursquare has its fingers in the pie here: A great blend whose taste matches its smell. Soft but intense vanilla flavors, some sweetness, subtle fruitiness. Very round and complex, perfect for novices and connoisseurs. Well located in terms of price.

Had a retest led by the co-founder Mr. Ian Burrell during the Pre-party to Sweden Rumfest at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm which confirmed my earlier review. The added picture is from the first test. ——————————————-Bought 2*3 cl of this rum, a blend from Mauritius (Gray’s) and Barbados (Foursquare). It’s good, but I expected more cause it’s Richard Seale and Ian Burrell that’s behind it. Overall I think it’s a quite great rum, but a little too weak. It’s unsweetened, but there are some sweetness so I think it maybe could be something for people who likes sweet rum that want to develop their rum drinking into less sweetened rum.

Barbados meets Mauritius. Banana and coconut meet grapefruit and raisin, as well as light mint. Overall very aromatic and accessible, but I find the light rum from equiano much more exciting.

A really solid middle ground rum - probably won’t be appealing to fans of sweet rums but fall a little flat for those in search of unique complexity. Still, this collab between Grays and Foursquare is notable as a really solid piece of work for a reasonable price. Citrus and tropical fruit, light and crisp, spicy sweet - this has understated complexity. Bonus for the fact that no sugar or colorants are added.

Day trip to Münster July 2025. Pub Whisky Dungeon. Starting with an Equiano. We have wood, vanilla and dried fruits here. On the palate then relatively dry and tropical fruits come in. Solid start.

A blend of rums from the Grays and Foursquare distilleries. The nose is more on the Bajan side, with shredded coconut, vanilla woodiness, dried fruit, spiciness and very sweet notes of caramel and brown sugar. It's hard to escape the Foursquare influence here. This is less true on the palate, with an attempt at the Mauritian profile, with a similar tone: sweet and caramelized, with spices and fruit accompanying a little dryness on the palate. Round and soft, but without great depth or complexity. The alcohol is well attenuated by the reduction. The finish is of medium length, very much focused on the Foursquare. It's dry, with oak, chilli and pepper on the finish, contrasting with the sweetness of coconut and vanilla. As beautiful as the story of this rum, which refers to a former slave who made a success of selling rum, may be, the product itself struggles to free itself from its one-dimensional, simplistic side, unfortunately.

I remember how there was a certain amount of hype about this rum when it came onto the market. I think it's somewhat justified. Relatively light on the nose with honey, wood and some fruit. Then the barrel on the palate, again some honey and perhaps some citrus.

Nice color. Uncomplicated sweetish aromas on the nose. Very standard. Also on the palate initially pleasant, but then with a sharp somewhat alcoholic note. In the finish mainly wood notes accompanied by spiciness. You can drink it, but don't have to. The bottle is visually successful. Tried the rest in the glass again after an hour. The sharp uneven note in the finish is now gone - the air really did the drop good... Rating accordingly increased by 0.2.

Nose of vanilla, wood, spices, dried fruit (raisins), orange. Palate - sweetness, honey, vanilla, oak, spice, raisins. Finish - medium length, spices wood and orange peel and dark chocolate. Good rum, approachable and easy sipping neat.

It reminds me a lot of Mount Gay XO crossed with Flor de Caña 18 in the best possible way. The nose is woody but sweet, full of tropical and dried fruits and banana. The taste is full, woody but sweet, mainly vanilla, chocolate, and raisins. A typical Barbados representative but very tasty. I think I found another favorite rum, too bad it's so late since the bottle is sold in Slovakia at an absurd price.

My first RumRatings review from 6 years ago: The Equiano was the rum I wrote something about back then. The rum shows a mild sweetness and a slightly fruity note on the nose. On the palate, you taste the natural cask sweetness and aromas of vanilla and caramel. Dry, it spoils you while drinking with classic unadulterated rum aromas. A bit of sharpness in the finish with a slight woody note harmonizes with some sweetness that then quickly recedes into the background. For under 50 euros, you get an authentic rum that brings its own character. The rum also gets everything right in terms of design. I can recommend the Equiano for all fans of dry rums who don't want artificial sweetness. I can also well imagine the rum for beginners. Clear purchase recommendation.

This rum I like the nose really well, where coconut and drier fruit notes harmonize great. Is then unfortunately a little sharper on the palate and slightly out of round, thereby somewhat thin. Nevertheless, a nice blend for in between.
