One taster called it a "legendary history" and a "beautiful unicorn," and the notes back that up. This is old-school Port Mourant Demerara: damp, musty wood on the nose, prunes, dates and raisins, then a palate of concentrated molasses, dark chocolate, walnut and a bitter oak edge. Rich, oily and long. At 61.5% the alcohol isn't perfectly tucked in, but it holds together.

Exemplary for the profile of the great Demeraras from the 70s, only with the downer that the alcohol is clearly less gallantly integrated compared to other outstanding representatives of this unfortunately long-gone era. This results in a slight imbalance, to which probably also the last refinement falls victim - I miss here, for example, even more concise dried fruit notes. Overall, however, the bottling still hits the core of the Demerara longing profile and puts the bulk of today's Guyana bottlings effortlessly in the bag.

01.02.2025 Retasting at the "Nordlichter Treffen 2025". Still a very good rum in my mind and always happy to try such old golden drops. --------------------------- Got this one as a present for my 40th and also have notes. A very dark rum, very oily and fruity. I think there is a floral/flowery note in there as well. The bottle is long gone but I would have loved a few backups.

At Stefan's I had the unique opportunity to taste the 74 Cadenhead PM, the 64 Cadenhead PM and the 75 Silver Seal PM at the same time - a thousand thanks for this opportunity! But what can I say about the rums? How can I do them justice and compare them fairly? I would probably have to devote entire evenings to each one. I thought they were all great. The Silver Seal, with its intense prune, had the most beautiful nose. In the mouth it's a little thinner and not quite on the same level as the Cadenheads. The 74 was great with an intense umami note (it made me think of burnt chicken skin). I had the hardest time with the 64, an excessive mustiness that I only got rid of in the last few sips. In the mouth, the 64 clearly wins over the others. I find it infinitely difficult to categorize the rums in a meaningful way. The last sips were best when I was concentrating on the enjoyment and less on the analysis.

For a special occasion, it has to be something special. 😉 Yes, you could call this the incarnation of old-school rum. What I especially like is the fruity top note of dried stone fruit on the nose, fluttering over the dark, earthy tones (German saying: When heart and mouth are delighted, the nose wants something too). On the palate, honestly, I don’t really find that fruity character again; instead, wood, licorice, leather, and a subtly present bitterness push more and more to the forefront without taking away the rum’s roundness. Overall, not an outstanding rum, but definitely a very worthy one for a special personal occasion. Now the question remains: What’s the upgrade for rounding it off in a year? 🤔 👀😎

Once again an extremely good PM in the old style. Rather musty-woody on the nose, not a plum bomb on the palate, but still fruity, woody, slightly bitter, alcohol well integrated. Long finish.

An incredibly intense and complex aroma bomb, even outside the surroundings are flooded with it. Very old, wet and musty wood. Concentrated treacle, hardly any PM plays with it so intensely. Dried plums, dates and raisins. Fresh pipe tobacco, black tea and finally some herbs and mocha It starts off pleasantly sweet and oily, with this intense treacle with brown sugar and concentrated stewed plums. After a few seconds, the enormous spiciness in the form of wet wood, cask, herbs, tobacco and aniseed follows and then combines perfectly with the bitterness, which becomes increasingly intense in the finish. I don't find the bitterness at all disturbing here, as it simply fits the profile of the PM in the mouth and everything together forms a harmonious "symbiosis" For me, this is a very complete Port Mourant that leaves little to be desired if you are generally a fan of this old style. For a long time, the exceptionally high availability and rather low prices on the secondary market gave the impression that this was a classic underdog. Conversations with friends confirmed this, among other things. An assumption that was completely wrong

Northern Lights meeting: Thanks to MoparRules for this great opportunity! Overripe on the nose, plum. Raisin but also barrel and fine herbal notes. Then complex and heavy on the tongue. Dark chocolate, tropical fruit, syrup?! Here, too, raisins but also nuts and a good portion of wood, which is also noticeable in the long finish, merging with dark chocolate and coffee.

A very rich rum. The intensity and concentration of these old demeraras is amazing. Oily, smooth, complex. On the nose dried fruits, dark chocolate, umami, a hint of polish and wood, composed to almost perfection. Same on the palate. So intense. The flavors on the nose all come up on the palate, even richer, an incredible depth of the flavors. Finish is endlesssssssssss…….

On the nose, burnt caramel, dried fruits, and a bit of walnut, with some lovage coming through after a while. On the palate, a symphony of dried fruits, red fruits, and caramel. Incredibly round and well-balanced. A touch of bitter wood. Everything just fits perfectly. In the long finish, the fruits fade away and the walnut remains.
