RumX Community Tasting Fiji 2001. Un nez avec beaucoup d’épices, du macis en particulier, du vernis et des fruits tropicaux en arrière-plan avec surtout de la banane trop mûre. De la pâtisserie et un côté grillé/rôti. La bouche est marquée par le bois de cèdre, les épices et les fruits tropicaux. Un bouche plutôt du côté lourd. La finale est longue, mais seulement sur le bois de cèdre et le macis. Un rhum plutôt sombre mais équilibré, sans défauts, sauf peut-être un boisé un peu trop marqué et un léger manque de complexité.

RumX Fiji Crosstasting April 2024 Rank 8/8 Overall the weakest of all 8 samples. However, it should be noted that all the 2001 Fijis show an exceptional quality level. Even the weakest in the line-up is still very good!

Fiji 2001 Community Tasting – big thanks to Jakob for organizing this blind tasting. A great vintage and a comparison not without surprises. The bottom for me were the two Rum Artesanal, both of which I didn't finish. Particularly disturbing was an unpleasant juniper off-note (strongly pronounced in rx15398, somewhat better but still disturbing in rx7779). Then for me as the actual bottom (so very good / with the right markers), but just not as great as the others, the Rum Cask rx479. Surprisingly, in the next place for me was Isla del Ron, which already has a small reference status in my heart since I tried it. But it was overtaken in the blind test by the delicious Whisky Jury (rx13025) and then by the sensational cave Guildive (rx1717). The Cave Guildive represents for me the winner of the classic Fiji 2002 profile and is really top. I rated higher only the Flag LMDW Antipodes (rx13440)... this one is clearly woodier but also ultra tasty. It was also clearly recognizable blind and made the photo finish millimeters behind the Plantation rx11133, which probably stood out because it was so un-Fiji2001 and has a great glue-caramel Guyana nose. Conclusion: Typical Fiji winners are the Cave Guildive on the fruity-honey-feelgood side and the Flag on the woody side. The Plantation is the wildcard winner. The two RA bottlings are the two that remain far below the level of the other two.

RumX Fidji 2001 Cross Tasting: For me the last place in the line-up (blind). While this is by no means a bad bottling, it lacks some of the complexity of the other bottlings. The 01 Fidji profile is there (and nice) but some excitement (fruity notes in particular) is missing. Cheers to Jakob!

Thanks Jakob for the opportunity to try a wide range of the Fiji 2001 bottlings. Although I had already had some in the glass before, the result surprised me again, as my previous favorite ended up in last place. Although it must be said that due to time constraints I didn't give most of them time to develop. So here is the result of the blind tasting, which differs from the scoring.

8,7:On the nose, medicinal with esters, glue, nail polish, rubber, some plastic, fresh, grassy molasses, sweet with honeycomb, tropical fruits like banana, roasted wood notes and vanilla, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, hints of coconut and green fruits arise, molasses is flowery, hay-ish, pastry, cookie dough, yeast join, salty and some anise, as rum becomes slightly dirty. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with light esters, rubber, glue, a bit plastic, fruity with banana and hints of coconut, passion fruit and mango, molasses is grassy, sweet with honey, dark with licorice, as the wood is roasted with cocoa, almonds, spicy with allspice, anise, salty, slightly metallic and dirty, when the rum is well rested. 8,6:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, medicinal, plastic, with roasted oak like nuts, cocoa, smoky, spicy, salty, sweet molasses, herbaceous, fresh with tea, vegetal with green peppers, flowery, fruity with green, tropical, citrus fruits. Barrel impact is obvious through our tasting.

The Rum Cask reveals here a very contrasting Fijian rum. The nose is quite elegant with a nice diversity of aromas. You discover aromas of butter, floral notes, esters, glue, rubber, but also smoky notes leaning towards tire. The fruitiness follows the theme with its exoticism (papaya, banana, pineapple) then come pastry and spicy notes (vanilla, pepper, brioche, honey). Overall, it remains on a rather delicate roundness. On the palate, the attack is first rather soft, thick and creamy. Afterwards, the sharpness of the alcohol becomes more penetrating and disturbing, which is a pity. You can distinguish a layer of exotic fruits (papaya, mango, banana, pineapple) with medicinal notes (esters, varnish, glue, rubber), smoky, bitter and metallic. The whole is good but lacks a bit of balance and structure on the palate. The finish is very long, dry with a nice astringency that goes towards notes both metallic and almost plasticized. There is a kind of warmth that goes towards spicy, salty, smoky, slightly bitter, herbal (tea) flavors accompanied by a woody touch. It's a quite volatile and changing profile, showing how a bottling of the same vintage can be totally different from others.

The 2001 vintage from Fiji is in a league of its own, and this bottling proves that as well - even if it is one of the weaker representatives of the vintage. The alcohol still stings a bit on the palate and the aromatic complexity of other bottlings does not come out quite as strongly. But that's enough criticism, because it remains a very successful rum with a captivating mix of herbal tea notes, subtle sweetness, wood, fresh tropical fruits and pointed spices. For the issue price from today's perspective almost a gift.

RumX Community Cross-Tasting "Fiji 2001" (by Jakob): also a typical Fiji profile, rubber, glue, fruit and a medicinal note. Tasty on its own, but among the eight it's rather at the lower end of the scale.

Day 22 in the Christmas calendar. Blind! Definitely Fiji! Nose: nice glue, finely spicy and sour-sweet fruit, gives papaya. A bit soapy. Honey-sweet and slightly licorice. A bit salty at the back... Palate: a slight sharpness and spicy. Again the glue, slightly bitter and slightly licorice. Almost a bit grassy. Fruity, leaning towards lychee. A bit soapy and slightly salty at the back. On the finish, tea comes in. It's nice, the Fiji.

Cross-tasting with Jakob and some forum members on 25.4.2024. Place 8. All Fiji rums were great. This one just had the bad luck of not being as good as the rest. Great nose, great taste, alcohol well integrated.

One of my favorite rums from Fiji. Great mix of tropical citrus fruits and the typical medicinal-mineral note of Fiji. Already a bit rounder due to its age than many of its countrymen, who often come across a bit wilder. Very tasty and fully recommended by me!

A bit reserved on the nose, but the classic Fiji markers are recognizable. On the palate quite shallow. Reminds me a bit of the first Papalin Jamaica. Not bad, but also no revelation for me.

Nase: Pot still sei Dank ein intensives Potpourri an Klebstoff-, Ester-, Gummi- und Fruchtaromen. Angenehme Frische dabei. Gaumen: Die Reise beginnt mit Klebstoff, wird schnell holzig und dann kommen die tropischen Früchte zum Vorschein bevor eine langanhaltende Schokonote dominiert. Danach wird es würzig, röstig und fleischig. Abgang: Schokolade hält sich lang, bevor sich Kräuter und Honig dazu mischen. Fazit: Von vorn bis hinten hätte ich auf einen Jamaikaner gesetzt. Intensive Nase, vielschichtiger Gaumen abwechslungsreicher Abgang. So muss ein Rum sein. Definitiv eine Kaufempfehlung.

Adjustment upwards by +0.3. The rum clearly benefits from having been open for several years and allowed to oxidize a bit. From a relatively weak 2001 Fiji (which was still an 8.2 for me) it has improved: more open and now a great, though still short finish.

First there is green banana, freshly chopped tamarind and manioc, plus sugar cane fried in melted butter. This creation is thoroughly seasoned with pure vanilla (a lot of vanilla). But it's not the familiar vanilla flavour, given by toasted american oak's additive cask maturation, but the purest vanila pods from Réunion. A really entertaining and exotic bouquet. With water: The fruits are taking command now. Palate This is shamanic stuff! Plenty of herbal, vegetal and sweet flavours are dancing around on our palate like crazy. Hard to unravel this compact package. Shall we? Ground tamarind powder in sweet vanilla pudding, new plastics, pink grapefruits juice and banana milkshake, seasoned with mint and tobacco leaves. Weird and exotic combination we know, but this somehow works very well. With water: Becoming sweeter and creamier now. But no new flavours on the table.
