Výjimečný Mount Gay
Review by Kevin Sorensen 🇩🇰
I have a lot of rums from this bottler because their average rum is alway good. The nose on this particular one is very fruity with vanilla. Then there is roasted barrel and a nice flowery note. The palate is complex and also very fruity with spices and some roasted barrel on top. The finish is long with roasted wood, fruits and a touch of tobacco.
Review by Christoph
For the not so long aging, wood / barrel is quite present in a positive sense, joined by caramel notes and rather sweet fruits such as mango and banana. Very soft and mild.

Excellent tasting evening at Bar 1802 in Paris, great advice and great discussions! Big kiff here, I must admit I've fallen for it. An ultra-efficient, complete rum, no false notes, caramel, marzipan, spices, a little spiciness, a nice age that keeps its punch but doesn't attack. In short, I loved it! I'm now looking for a bottle to take home!

Amazingly good, very round Mount Gay with nice tropical, light menthol notes.

Compared to the 2007 and 2009, I like the much fruitier notes and especially the optimal integration of alcohol. Pleasantly mild and nutty and caramel notes. Very tasty Barbade.

Nice fruity spicy on the nose. Tart sweet with plum and cherry and those sulfured dried apricots. A touch of vanilla burnt sugar and bourbon is still there. On the palate comes, again, a tart-bitter-sweet fruitiness, most likely from the dried apricot again. But then also immediately something spicy-woody and perfumy in the direction of violets. In the finish I have again this tart-sweet of violet and green tea.Overall delicious.

According to Dr. Frank Ward the Velier bottlings of Mount Gay have been overaged and have subsequently lost part of their classic aromas. As pure pot still MG is supposedly best at 4-5 years of age, lets see how this fares. On the nose more robust than its ‘07 counterpart. It’s camphorous, leathery and dusted with winter spices, but the sweetness is much more concentrated on dried fruits, burnt sugar and old wine. There’s balsamic vinegar, dried mushroom, cedar cigar box and a hint of isobutanol. A hearty body accompanied by kitchen herbs and red rhubarb. The palate is dominated by camphorous and phenolated notes, making it quite the “old”, musty and tannic experience. Starts with plenty of dried fruits and orange zest, then more of the balsamic vinegar and cask spices. And eventually tobacco and hints of ash. The taste is full and round, very red wine forward. Dried fruits and balsamic vinegar perpetuate into the finish. Still earthy and musty, further imprinting the idea of old wine into my mind. Maybe it’s a little too present. Dr. Ward, you might have a point here.

A good solid rum! In the nose the classic mount gay smell woody, nutty and spicy. In mouth you will taste more fruits (mango, apricot…), tobacco and mocha with some leather. At the end there is an interesting bitter sweet finish with black tea, fruits, milk chocolate and a looooot of wood
Review by Thunderbird
Surprisingly fruity (citrus and later cherry) at the beginning in the nose, later a touch of vanilla and coconutOn the palate a woodiness and spiciness prevails with a touch of mocha...very tasty. The finish is also very mild! The alcohol is perfectly integrated!A first class Mount GayToday a second time in the glass. Somehow lost it for me, maybe form of the day. Burnt caramel predominates and the depth is missing for me.

Very special flavor profile of sour cherries, unripe apricots, glue, lychee, black tea, burnt wood, incense, strong dark espresso and milk chocolate with nutmeg. This acidity irritates and fascinates me at the same time how that gets in there. Beautiful product, extremely complex because at the same time much wood much floral, spicy and fruity notes meet and battle.... Crass long finish even for a Mount gay! but there you have to have real Bock on it! Alcohol could be a little better integrated, Definitely not an easy sipper...😅

The weakest of Velier Mount Gay I tried so far. Maybe the low abv is weakening the profile, but it's almost disappointing compared to other selections from the same stock of barrels. The nose is a last ward typical one, just a bit soft, with marzipan and solvent. The problems begin whem you sip it... Weak, and mainly driven by wood. It's not bad overall, just not keeping up the standard of others Mount Gay selected by velier
