Maybe not the overpowered Diesel flavoured Caroni but good rum nonetheless. Dry and woody.

Dirt on the nose, but not from a tidy and orderly mechanic's workshop. Metallic, medicinal flavors, woody bitterness, and acidity. A pungent nose of not-so-fresh peppers. It is essential to let it breathe, and then beautiful aromas of rubber, tar, and overripe tropical fruits appear and almost erase that first impression. The first taste is watery, as if this rum had been over-diluted. It deepens further, then the aromas return. Unfortunately, metallic and medicinal aromas, reminiscent of plastic, dominate the wood, rubber, and overripe fruit. The finish is surprisingly long, but these unpleasant aromas linger until the end. Not much to enjoy here, even though this rum has many qualities, especially if you are patient.

No closed distillery is chased harder than Caroni. The Trinidad distillery shut down around 2002 and not a drop has been made since, but its heavy, oily, almost diesel-like rum became a collector obsession, carried to the world by Velier. Every bottle now comes from a finite, shrinking stock, which is exactly why the prices keep climbing.
