Sip this one neat and slow: it's a 1993 Hampden, 20 years old at 50%, and it drinks softer than most modern Hampdens. Pineapple, banana, marzipan and that classic glue note are all here, plus roasted wood and a floral touch. Several tasters call it a gentle, fruity, dessert-like Hampden — but many wish it hadn't been dropped from cask strength.

Another wonderful release. Nice and fruity with roasted wood and spices. Very well balanced and the ABV has been integrated really well. Would really habe liked to try it at cask strength 😊

After a long rum break, sitting in rainy but beautiful Sweden, a mature HD seems just right ☺️ Nose: oh how beautiful are fine esters. Pleasant solvents with fruit vinegar and sweetish pineapple, pineapple marzipan. Also fine lemon. Slightly buttery. All well integrated, maybe a bit too reduced, deserved a bit more cask strength. 8.7 Palate: pleasant esters upfront and distinctly bacon-y. Also fruity-sour pineapple with lemon on the finish. Sweetish from pineapple marzipan. Unfortunately feels a bit thin, I wouldn’t have diluted it to 50%. This adds a bit more bitter nutmeg. 8.6 Hampden is always nice. But I’ve had better 93ers in the glass; certainly also due to the dilution.

My first '93 Hampden. In this case, from the <>H batch (probably one of the peculiarities of this year, in which different marks were produced with <>H and C<>H). Despite the dilution, which is obvious to taste, this Hampden comes around the corner with quite a complex flavor. In addition to the classic Hampden flavors, this bottling features strong floral notes that give the whole an unfamiliar, but by no means unpleasant, touch in addition to the Hampden DNA. Overall, however, to identify as <>H that washes over the taste buds with some esters, but just not the full broadside. At cask strength probably a top bottling, so only upper midfield for me.

A very good Hampden, quite soft and indulgent. The reduction is well mastered, although you lose a bit of length. It's not an ester bomb going in all directions but rather a balanced and accessible Hampden. At the release price, it was a magnificent everyday Hampden. If the distillery could release a permanent reference of this class, that would be great!

Great nose, recognizable as a typical Hampden. Lots of marzipan, ester, solvent, pineapple, and banana. These intense notes are present in taste but much thinner. It comes across a bit fruitier. The finish is short with some dark chocolate and bitterness. A good Hampden yes, but the dilution has a negative effect. Nothing special.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can smell wild esters, after which your whole body soaks up the scent of yellow tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die".

For a 20 year old <>H, it is rather more restrained in the vulna and in the end in the taste, however we find the expected notes of tropical pineapple, glue, banana. The palate is more interesting than the nose, but even here I feel that the cask strength would rather help it. Still, very nice.

Tasted blind, it's a total surprise to come across this rum long set aside for its status as a "little unicorn." It's been a while since the high ABV Hampdens dominated the market, and it's nice to fall back on a fresh and accessible treat. There are esters, but in the background, giving way upfront to banana, crème brûlée, candied redcurrant... The whole pastry shop. You better understand the success at release when this profile was still rare. In summary, a very well-made rum, not the most complex in the world, but concentrating all the assets you expect from a worthy sugarcane glass.
