Hampden Pure Single Jamaican Rum Overproof
Most tasters land in the same place: this is classic Hampden funk done well, with overripe banana, pineapple, glue and solvent up front, plenty of oak and spice underneath. The 60% sits surprisingly well hidden for most, though a few find it sharp or a touch hot neat. A name people repeatedly call their first real step into Jamaican high-ester rum.
- Classic Hampden funk
- Overripe tropical fruit
- Long finish

Delicious, absolutely a must have in my collection. This over proof is incredible in any funky mixed drink and a fantastic sipper as well. Drying but juicy, a little astringint, this rum can be an experience if one wants to just sit and contemplate the esters, the fruitiness, and the depth of complex tropical flavors in this rum.

It’s fantastic that it’s possible to buy a rum like this, matching the Veliers, to this quite low price. The nose is complex and full of aromas of esters, fruits and wood. At the palate it’s heavy, complex and funky with flavors full of esters and spices. The finish is long, elegant and subtle.

This is my reference at 83 points. I know it’s a strange number to have as a reference, but still its a great rum and it keeps the rest of the rums in check and have plenty to spare in the 80s and 90s above it. I use it to kind of reset my values for my other rums, but still my daily form fluctuate. - Had to go back to my reference and it’s a good practice… - Now with the new HLCF being so different I think I need to stock up with this good oldie - Yup, got me a couple more Bottles just to keep. - Strange, now compared the last of my old bottle to a recently opened one and the old has more rubber notes and the newly opened one is closer to the new HLCF Classic. - Some months since last time now and this time around A/B tested with a friends bottle and there is definitely differenceses between them. - Almost a year since last time above and it definitely has its place as a reference. However the difference between the bottles makes this less clear. I really like the Asphalt tone in the original bottle. 250701: - Long time since last tasting and I do have a problem with my old 8,3 points as I now think this is much better than that, especially with the not so common asphalt note. Not sure what to do about it and will have to keep it as is for now. 260109: - Not sure how to handle this now… I would love to lift it to 8.5, but having it as a refence makes it impossible and moving all the other rums according to it would be impossible. I guess taste varies over longer time periods too and not just day to day.

A really good Jamaican style rum with a real punch. I'd say most may need a few drops of water to make it a lot more digestible. Rest for 15-20 minutes for all flavours to be released. Has more bang for your buck than the 92 proof version.

Nice rum! Very pronounced toastiness! It drinks very well!

A fantastic nose of rum raisins, like Jamaican ice cream (and with good reason). But also tropical fruits, especially banana and a little pineapple, and measured esters. On the palate, the ABV is discreet but supports the aromas. There are tamed esters and plenty of fruit, but also spice and roast. The finish is long and after a first glass I'm quite enthusiastic about this affordable Hampden. But after a second and especially a third glass, the aromas start to bore me and I imagine this rum should be reserved for mixology rather than pure tasting. Hence my much lower score than I'd imagined. Nevertheless, an excellent price/quality ratio.

Per me rimane uno dei migliori Hampden da bere! Un blend davvero riuscito che, come prima release insieme a Velier, ha mostrato al panorama del rum quello che Hampden è in grado di offrire! Tra l’altro qualità prezzo strepitosa!

pure he is actually a bit too roasty and mocha / coffee with metallic notes. the banana and esters etc. are there but rather in the background... but overall almost unbelievably drinkable for 60% and nicely balanced!in the Mai Tai again, exactly that is reversed banana / caramel and light mocha associations very round and drinkable with enough complexity to take some time for the drink. good PLV and definitely better than the 46%! (who is also surprised?😜)

More emphasis on fruity and funky notes with the higher ABV. However, nose is much more „closed up“ and needs a very long time in the glas to open up compared to the lower ABV bottling. All in all both seem legit choices😅
Review by Lukas Jäger
My entry into the higher ester world and thus for me somehow a flagship for Hampden (although rather emotional and as a blend of course difficult to compare with some other bottlings). With good PLV and a lot of flavors, it is suitable for beginners, but also for advanced rum drinkers. In my eyes, clearly stronger than its diluted brother.

Finally I get around to this one. Bottle is already almost empty. The is namely really good and had an unbeatable PLV.nose: intense and full-bodied. Fruity-caramel. Has a lot of papaya and mealy banana with some black currant. Adds tart caramel with vanilla and some cold pipe tobacco at the back. Almost seems a bit floral-perfumed.Palate: powerful and really tasty. Slightly bitter, with a slightly salty umami note. But then also immediately fruity towards orange peel, banana peel and papaya. Light caramel and strongly pulling in the direction of licorice. Also has something of chewing tobacco. In the finish again licorice, green tea and tropical fruit.A good increase by 46%igem. And that's already really nice.

👃: Hyper funky, fruity, ripe banana, marzipan (almond), alcohol, light spice and some wood👄: Citrus, dry wood, yeast, alcoholic, fruity and Indian wood style spice. It's funky and complex⏳: Medium, red fruit and spice.

Tasting notes: Lots of power, tropical fruit and candied lemon.
Review by Rodolphe
A very good and powerful Jamaican at a good price. Less easy and less funky than its smaller brother. A tiny touch of water brings out the pastry and fruity sides even more.
Review by HenryL
Somewhat more floral and less sweet than the Great House 2020. Also woodier, spicier and somewhat less complex. In a direct comparison, the Great House clearly has the nose in front, but whether it is worth the extra cost to me...Compared to the successor, the HLCF Classic clearly woody-spicy.

I've tried it again now after a good year and have to say that I remembered it better, so I'm downgrading it to one point because I think it's good, but not very good. But I also see this rum more in the mixer corner for cocktails and long drinks.
Review by Basti
The tropical maturation is clearly recognizable here, both visually and sensorially. In addition to citrus fruits, pineapple, subtle notes of glue and varnish, spices and wood are also quite present here. PLV is excellent here!
Review by Sebastian Kornett
In the nose like its little brother. Flavor more bang, which is due to the higher alcohol. Very nice roast flavors with decent funk and with a slightly underlining sweetness. Is for me clearly better than his little brother. I love this rum. Tasty Jamaican. I can drink it every day. A total of 7 bottles of it secured for now. Let's see if there are more. ;)

"At 60% ABV it should satisfy anyone's desire for "Cask Strength" rum. Also at £80 it is priced competitively alongside the Indie bottlings. I would certainly recommend picking up a bottle of this, instead of perhaps chucking £150 at a 20 year plus independent bottling. It makes a belting rum..."Read full review →
