Sip it neat and it opens slowly: fresh-cut grass and cane up front, a whiff of glue, then black pepper and vanilla as it sits in the glass. The ex-cognac cask shows in the finish — several tasters call the influence obvious. One member found it "really complex" with peach and passion fruit; another liked it without quite loving it. The nose starts with some fresh grassy, wooden and pepper notes and a slight hint of glue. Leave it for a couple of minutes and you’ll find notes of passion fruit and peach and more and more vanilla. Really complex. The taste ist pepper and grass again but with some caramel and vanilla following short after. The finish is long and warm with strong peach notes, but not sweet at all. Really a very good one.

This rum bottled by La Maison du Rhum is produced at the Rivière du Mat distillery in Reunion. It’s like all their releases limited and this edition is aged for 10 years in a combination of oak and ex-cognac barrels whereafter it’s bottled in 5 485 bottles. The nose is round, fruity, spicy, roasted and smoky with scents of pineapple, passion fruits, pepper, vanilla and hazelnuts. At the palate it’s round, spicy, fruity, sweet, woody and roasted with flavors of pepper, vanilla, pineapple, citrus and black currant. The finish is rather long lasting.

The nose is very confusing to me. It comes off quite technical aka some TDL. Taste-wise in a similar vein. Maybe too sweet and a lower ABV is a downside. Some chemistry, tropical fruit, vanilla, and citrus. The caramel bitterness at the end is bothersome.

Nice and easy to drink, the influences from the Cognac cask especially in the finish are more than obvious, though not long lasting.

On the nose for me, it initially starts off all herbal and grass like alongside some chemical/glue like notes (almost industrial) but left in the glass it opens up more to reveal some desiccated coconut as well as some toasted barrel note you get in some bourbons as well as. Final nose notes are some cinnamon, nutmeg but despite all those notes everything smells well integrated On the palate, your tongue initially gets a blast of blackcurrant (enough for you to notice) and then it shifts onto a little grassy note alongside some mineralic tropical fruits - never had mineral-like tropical fruits but that’s what my brains telling me what it would imagine it tasted like!! However near the end there’s a definitive lactic tang - either like a Greek style yoghurt or when you’ve eaten a slice of sourdough bread… Mouthfeel and texture are also both good. Quite complex this compared to a large majority of other rums I’ve had - it’s good, well made and well presented… However, this rum leaves me feeling a little cold…. I like it but I don’t love it - I can’t explain why I feel like this however for me this doesn’t resonate with me, despite liking it…. Might have to try other Reunion rums to see if other bottlings can change my mind but as my first interaction with them it’s a good one

The attack on the nose is rather vegetal with freshly cut grass and fresh cane. Everything rounds off thanks to beautiful ripe fruits (banana and citrus). In the end, the nose is very fresh and sprinkled with woody touches. On the palate, you find the roundness of the nose, the banana is still very pleasant. But the main thread of this tasting focuses on a well-spiced profile with some hints of vanilla. The finish is rather sustained for a rum reduced to 45%, continuing on the spices with some woody and coffee bursts.
