Velier Uitvlugt UF30E UF30E 1985
Deep-diving Demerara collectors are the crowd here. This 27-year tropical-aged Velier Uitvlugt is a slow starter on the nose but, as one taster put it, "a bomb in mouth" — chocolate, molasses sweetness, figs, coffee, cinnamon and old woody notes that keep shifting. The finish runs long. At 60.7%, it's rich and intense, not a casual pour.

Rich, evolving old Demerara with a long finish Loved as a legendary Demerara, praised for its evolving chocolate-and-coffee palate and huge finish. Several regulars rank it just below the 88/96/97 Uitvlugts, and a couple find the nose lags the palate.

A legendary bottle! A really complex rum, it transforms in the mouth where it always leaves you with something new! The thing that amazed me the most is that it has a really terrific balance, one of those bottles you would never stop drinking!
Review by Jakob
Falls slightly behind the top group of 88, 96 and 97 in blind comparison with the other Velier Uitvlugts, but moves at the top level despite a somewhat restrained nose.
Review by Johannes
Can perhaps not quite keep up with the other Verliere uitvlugts, nevertheless very high level.
Review by Oliver
Rather disappointing on the palate. However, the intense flavors then save him.
Review by Benoit Mahe
In my opinion, the nose is not up to the level of the 1997. On the other hand, the palate and especially the finish are top-notch. A great, great rum, even if my preference is usually for much younger rums.

Today we did a widespread tasting with very different rums. This is a masterpiece and well worth the money. Super long finish that takes you to the skies.

Unusual profile. On one hand a fine sweetness and spice and a bit of caramel. But also a strong bitterness and light bergamot earl grey notes. Awesome extraordinary bottling! Thanks Jakob!

An absolutely legendary bottle with incredible richness. The nose is absolutely sublime: first on glue and coconut, then moving to much spicier notes (chili, pepper, cinnamon, licorice, anise), a rather heavy fruitiness (prunes, dates) followed by dark wood and indulgent chocolate. Then come more floral scents, cold tobacco, but also peach aromas that bring freshness and perfume the nostrils. An evolving and extremely complex profile. The attack is frank, typically Guyanese on molasses, vanilla, oak barrel, coffee, dark chocolate, leather, and tobacco. There’s a festival of spices on the palate, moving from cinnamon to licorice, passing through star anise, ginger, and chili. The fruits become darker, on cherry, fig, date, coconut, and berries that align with the dry and dark structure of the profile. It’s a very complex rum, both typical and changing, quite difficult to grasp in all its layers but extremely balanced. The alcohol is very well integrated. It might be just a notch below its siblings bottled in 1996 and 1997. The finish is endless, stretching over toasted oak barrel, coffee, cocoa, hot caramel, and tobacco, but also spices (cinnamon, anise, licorice, vanilla). The structure is supported again by cherry, berries, date, and raisin, offering a dry but elegant fruitiness that beautifully concludes the tasting. While it’s a bit harder to grasp than other Velier bottlings, it remains a rum apart and from another time, a masterpiece of complexity that we won’t be tasting again anytime soon.

... The Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

Slow start on the nose, not so impressive compare to palate. What a bomb in mouth! Strong chocolate taste, sweetness by molasses, figs, cinnamon, coffee, vanilla, smoke and wood and much more. Amazingly long finish opens it up to many other areas. Love this profile.
Review by Bob the Drunker
Yes, this is certainly my top 3 rated rums by far like SA 1948. This rum with 27 years tropical aging did not make it as dark as I thought would be, fresh body with tropical fruits and PM aged woody notes with toffee, chocolate and a hint of bbq, in your mouth it’s just complex and evolves with clear layer, superb stuff
Review by Allan Bjerreskov
Tasted this at a rum bar. And while it is indeed very good, to me it is not the best of the Velier Demeraras that I have tasted. It had lost a bit of its punch as the bottle was probably only 25% full and the owner did mention that it had dropped a few points in ABV. So take that into consideration for this rating.

Very solid and very relaxed chocolate. Of course, in cross-comparison with legends... What does that mean.
