Had a wonderful tasting event yesterday with only good CDI rums. This one is the last one of the six. This is a VERY rare bottle as it was originally made for the Hong Kong Market. Even the bottle is out of this world. No wonder this one was saved for last as I'm pretty sure I will never taste this one again unless I go visit Hong Kong and find a bar that has it. A true Hampden rum and it's so full of funk that every Jamaican would start dancing just smelling it. A true masterpiece from CDI that I would have loved to have in my collection.

What kind of crazy Hampdens do they still have here??? These are intense. Overripe tropical fruits like pineapple and banana, but also a round of esters + glue and solvents, really tasty :-) Outstanding Hampden...

Damn strong and well-balanced Hampden, which surprisingly shows only minimal wood and spice influences. Besides the typical Hampden markers, there’s little new (a hint of tobacco on the nose), but this one is perfectly balanced!

Intense with rich fruity notes (filled pinapple), a balanced amount of wood and some smokey notes. Not quite on par with the RA bottling, yet still very nice. The CdI comes with more wood but lacks a bit in intensity and fruitiness comparatively.

9,1:On the nose, esters, varnish, nail polish, funky, smoky roasted wood notes with bacon, spicy, overripe banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, vegetal molasses with briny olive, herbaceous, sweet with honey, flowery, grassy, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, metallic patina and rubber are out, fermentation brings vinegar, red fruits arise, molasses is earthy, musty, pastry, roasted nuts and leather join, allspice. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, rubber, burnt with bacon, dry, fruity with overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, later dried, green and red fruits, mango, slightly astringent, the wood is roasted, caramelized, smoky, spicy, tannic and molasses brings briny olive, hay. 8,7:The finish is long, oily, dry and tannic, a bit dirty, with roasted oak, smoky, spicy, meaty, nutty, fruity with tropical fruits, medicinal with esters, rubber, phenol, slightly metallic and molasses helps with vegetal touch..

What a beast. What can you say about such a bomb. HGML par excellence. And I... unfortunately drank this one without comparing it to the Rum Artesanal HGML from the same vintage. Conclusion from memory: they are pretty much on par.

This rum is a real beast. Golden yellow, clear and radiant color. For 33 years still subtle in color depth. Here the slower continental aging plays a role. On the nose immediately a bundle of simply delicious tropical fruit notes. Banana and mango, with a slight glue note behind. Everything incredibly round but still intense. The ABV wonderfully integrated. On the palate some spicy and subtle woody notes come in. The whole thing goes into a harmonious long finish. I'm thrilled. For some, the rum might possibly be a bit too tame. I love this balance of long barrel aging without the wood aromas taking over.

1983 Hampden for Hong Kong. Great nose of apple, mint, tropical fruits, and funky esters. On the palate, lots of funk & glue, some apple but also unusually salty and slightly smoky. Reminds me of smoked almonds with sea salt next to a paint shop. The smoky part is a bit too much for me. However, the finish is impressively long, oily, and astringent! I think I like the 1983 Hampden from Rum Artesanal much better here, but I currently lack a direct comparison.

Impressive nose, funky, fruity, intensive. Excellent palate, pineaple, dried banana, nice esters, obe can find some rubber, almonds, pepper, smoke, and despite its age not much wood is present, elegant and balanced. Finish is long and delicate. True gemtleman drink, smooth, easy to drink.

This is the first continentally aged Hampden for me (for me, only! ;-)) being on par with my beloved No.1 of the tropically aged Hampdens (being the Habitation Velier HLCF 2010/2016). This 33 year old CDI is the most balanced Hampden I ever have tasted, yet. Yes, it is a gentleman under the Hampdens, very mild and with well integrated alcohol. So, no, it is not a wild animal which I normally prefer among the Jamaican rums. No, it belongs to the mild family, so it is difficult to compare it with the wild tropically aged Hampdens, it would be like comparing pears to apples. Nevermind, within the group of about 30 years old continentally aged Hampdens, this one here is extremely well balanced. There are no grassy or spicy notes that would disturb my preferred fruity style. There is a hint of grass in the nose but very restrained and not on the palate. So, it is fruity and better balanced than, e.g., the Artesanal HGML 1989. And the alcohol is absolutely perfectly integrated, you do not feel or taste it at all. I can only say, "wow" and "well done", Compagnie des Indes! A really great Hampden!

Astringent monster. There's so much happening in the finish. It's impressive how little oakiness this rum has. A great balance of long cask aging and esters. A fantastic high-grade molasses rum that deserves its top spot.
