It's lighter and creamier than most Demeraras, almost column-still soft, but layered underneath. Many call it the best Uitvlugt they've had. The one recurring gripe: a finish some wished ran longer.

Just retasted this one and this time it scored higher, maybe because I had a perfect day for this kind of rum. The nose is intense and fruity with wood, spices, and varnish trailed by chocolate, tobacco and light marzipan. The palate is sweet and sharp at the same time with fruits, spices, tobacco, oak and light licorice and grass. The finish is medium to long and warm with oak, coconut and tea. A few drops of water will release a lot of extra flavours on the palate and finish.

Another beautiful uitvlugt velier! Intense and very fruity with a nice caramel note! The spices and chocolate act as a garnish and make everything very mouthwatering! Wood integrated perfectly! A very balanced rum indeed and amazing to drink!

A wonderful tropically matured Demerara. Lots of glue, caramel and coconut on the nose, fat and oily on the palate. A nose that likes to accompany a double corona, intoxicating. It's a real shame that there's nothing more to come. Anyone who has a bottle in their collection can count themselves lucky.

Tasted it yesterday; I'm still smiling blissfully now. 😍 Update 2024-10-01: Today I had the rare opportunity to taste this great rum again (many thanks to ander_s for the great surprise). While I gave the rum an exuberant 94 points at the time, I'm a little more reserved today. These are of course only nuances, but for my taste the rum could taste a little "darker", the REV-Head in me comes through ... Nevertheless, an incredible pleasure - see my opening sentence.

Amazing nose, rum + nuts taste .. Old Velier Demerara rum is the best thing you can taste in the rum world. The rums were aged in the tropics for several years by mistake and nobody refilled the barrel. The Andel tax was 90% or more, which is why the taste is especially full and intense. Even though it is an extra expensive product, I recommend to taste a rum from this series at least once in your life.

Tasted blind and absolutely blown away! I already thought I had found an absolute hidden gem. Nope... Absolutely brilliant and rightly already legendary rum. Super intense, super balanced with tropical and red fruits, a nice touch of wood and caramel. Eternally long finish.

The nose and taste are partly very different, personally a bit too glue-like for me, with a slight floral note of lavender and mint/eucalyptus. Blind, I would partly guess Foursquare or Worthy Park because of the coconut! 😋

Let it air a little first. For 'only' 60% ABV, it comes across quite powerfully... then the nose reveals a wonderfully complex aroma of dried fruit (dates), tropical fruit, tobacco / cedar wood, varnish, caramel, milk chocolate. There is also a hint of Ahoy sherbet lemon wafting in the background. A pleasant sweetness on the palate, accompanied by spices, coffee and nutty, roasted notes. Beautifully balanced and a mega long finish. Great Demerara cinema!

A powerful and very open nose, like a perfume with vanilla and coconut. One might think for a moment of Foursquare, but a Foursquare on steroids, deeper. With a deep sweetness, a marked bitter caramel. The first palate brings very noble wood, sweetness with a bitter caramel, dried fruits, and tropical fruits. The finish is long, on a beautiful bitter caramel and wood, and, at the very end, the fruits. The empty glass still exhales even more flavors, herbal and even floral. A truly addictive rum!!

WOW outstanding nose Coconut, oak, chocolate, plum, vanilla, licorice, marzipan and slightly fruity madness complex in the nose really strong. On the palate beautiful sweetness floods the mouth mmhh lots of chocolate and coconut slightly reminiscent of a Belize... only much more complex and incredibly round. Some clove and tobacco in the finish. Delicious !!!

Edit: nice representative from Guyana. In my opinion also very good, but some small detail or off-note bothered me, which I unfortunately can't name exactly. Unfortunately, this ruins a better rating. It may also be due to the price that expectations were set so high. Unfortunately, for me it's more of a collector's item than a rum that you can drink without giving it much thought. I would have imagined the finish to be much longer than it is. If rum had a prophet, it would be this rum. A wonderful nose that dives into the heart of the Demerara terroir with its spicy, coffee, and chocolate notes, tropical fruits, and pastry and sweet notes following along with a hint of glue and varnish, tobacco, and floral notes that make it a perfect rum on the olfactory level. The palate is dreamy, like being guided through a poem with the dark, spicy, and chocolatey profile, the fruits, and this incredible depth. An elegant, complex, balanced rum, infinitely smooth and simply delicious. The finish is endless, with floral, spicy notes, almonds, chocolate, tea, caramel, tropical fruits, wood, and licorice. The quintessence of rum in all its splendor.

Pleasure at the very highest level. The smell alone (solvent, lots of spices) of the rum is indescribable. The rum unfolds its full aroma in the mouth. An absolute highlight that will be remembered for a long time.

What an incredible quality. A full-bodied, intense nose. Spicy, woody and yet fruity. Toasted, lovely sandalwood with some tobacco and leather. Then at the same time dried apricot and dried plum as well as cherry. Strong treacle, malty and vanilla powder. Palate: no less intense and full-bodied. Fine oak and piney sandalwood. Clearly almond, tending slightly towards marzipan. Dark roasted and therefore slightly bitter-salty. Beautifully spicy with nutmeg and clove. Dried, sour currant and light chocolate notes on the finish. Top of the league together with the other Velier

Nectar of the gods! So far the rum I've had in my glass. Addendum: had another 0.5 cl to taste today and the first impression was confirmed. Everything I like about Demerara is there and in just the right amount.

Impressive Uitvlugt from 1997, a little funky on the nose which surprised me a little for a Guyana rum. However, the taste is very balanced and complex. The finish could be a little longer. Can't quite keep up with my top Caroni representatives but still very tasty.

Absolutely unique Cocos-Pattex glue note and also very complex. Rarely have I taken so much time to savor it, it's actually hard to stop. What else is there to say? This rum is absolute fun and is one of my absolute favorites. If I had to take 3 rums with me to a desert island, this one would definitely be there 🤙

This Uitvlugt Velier is once again an absolute masterpiece! The nose is very intense and multi-layered with coconut, caramel, vanilla, wood, dried fruits, marzipan, glue, and chocolate. Cookie dough, citrus fruits, and cedar wood join in very harmonious and balanced complexity. The palate is pure madness! A warm spiciness leads and brings coconut, a nice sweetness, wood, spices, vanilla, tobacco, oak, nutmeg, and licorice. The darker aromas/impressions are somewhat restrained but do not make the enjoyment any smaller or less exciting. Clove, mocha, cookie dough, and nuts complement the great complexity and I could chew on a sip forever. The long, balanced finish offers coconut, wood, marzipan, caramel, milk chocolate, oak, licorice, and nuts. Orange, tropical fruits, and tea expand the aroma in beautiful harmony. This Uitvlugt is extremely tasty and full-bodied and I am very happy to be able to taste it. Thanks to @Skyfly for this brilliant sample 😀

Is this a great rum? Definitely! Is this my preferred flavor profile? Unfortunately no. The other reviews already reflect the profile very well. Since I personally prefer fruit, I don't get my money's worth here.

Very successful Uitvlugt with pronounced depth and classic Demerara character. Complex dark fruits, tea, leather and a fine spiciness on the nose. Powerful yet balanced on the palate with molasses, wood and a pleasant tartness full of character. The alcohol is well integrated and carries the profile cleanly. Overall, an impressively complex rum that perfectly combines intensity, elegance and a clear line.

An absolutely perfect and complex Guyana, which I have no idea what to complain about. Wonderful flavours of wood, vanilla, tobacco, chocolate notes with no obvious tannins from the raisins. I drink this gem with the utter respect that this Guyanese heritage will never be again :-(

Rich, complex and layered rum. I struggle to tie the high accolades from other bit put it down to the combination of drinkablity and complexity. It’s wasn’t as good as the SVW 1999 in my tasting but close. A tad flat on the finish but overall gives a lot of flavours. A complex nutty finish with some light glue and a moorish finish. Really very good

Un premier nez tres agréable porté sur la coco et quelques solvant en approfondissant le deuxieme nez, des notes de mangue et un légé toasté et une petite pointe mentholé subtile viennent agrementé la complexité. Le tout est très rond et l’alcool peu prenant. En bouche une douceur avec un boisé subtile laissant transparaître la coco, la reglisse cette pointe d’epice mentholé. Une petite chaleur sur la langue du aux 59,7 degré mais qui ne reste pas. Une finale agréable et longue en bouche apportant une fraicheur. C’est du tres bon!

In direct comparision to Uitvlugt 1988 this one is a bit less impressive to me, but still very good stuff! ***retasting: I find it more impressive this time, need some rest in the glass, dry fruit, glue, tobacco, wood, dry, I like it better after tasting 100+ rums. I am happy to keep few bottles of this treasure. Increasing tasting of 2 ponts.

The first thing I get on the nose is old book store, that sweetish, musty odour. As a book worm myself, I am immediately sold by this rum! With a little aeration the smell unfolds notes of coconut, vanilla, caramel. And it seems to be more fruity than Diamond RX368. The taste is quite similar to Diamond but woodier and spicier. I am quite confident to say that this is the best Uit I have tasted and will ever taste. This is very complex and layered rum scoring easily well over 9 for me. Now a Demerara icon in the glass. 17y tropical without cask topping up, which has made the ULR a flavor-concentrated bottling. The color is unspectacular. Brown amber. On the nose after a few minutes a wonderful mix of wood spice, caramel, honey. Plus dried apricots and coconut. All floating and round. On the palate perfectly balanced. Also here wood spice, a bit of roastiness. Plus fruity notes, brown sugar, nougat and mint at the end. The finish could be a bit stronger/longer, but is very nice on fine dark aromas with light mint and an elegant slight bitterness. A Guyana rum that is wonderful to enjoy and shines in the combination of aromatic richness/complexity and this comparatively floating lightness.

Thanks to the recent split, I got to try something very special. The Uitvlugt 1997 ULR is wonderful! From the nose, smelling of fruit, maybe plum, coconut, wood and glue, to the sweet and round taste of coconut, tobacco, wood and nutmeg, all the way to the finish, it is so pleasant and balanced. I'm shockingly in love!!

Nose: glue, raisins and dark fruit, spice, a little bitterness. Palate: an absolute explosion of flavour, completely unlike anything I’ve had before. Can see what people mean with coconut. Similar to some Caroni dirtyness. Incredible.

The estery coconut rocketship that is this uitvlugt. It is crazy how well the coconut integrates to the Demerara flavours, the spices and wood are evolving around this until they fade away into a long finish of caramel and wood.
