Here's the twist: it's aged in an ex-Caroni cask, but almost nobody tastes the tar. Blind, most tasters guessed a mild Jamaican — all those esters, vinegar and vegetal, "dirty" green notes. What you actually get is a Haitian cane-juice clairin: grassy, floral, dry, with pineapple and mango fruit and just a whisper of oak. The short aging softens the raw edges without taming the character.

From an ex-Caroni cask I would have expected a more pronounced Caroni flavor, but it must be said that it ended up being aged very little. Great rum, fragrant and surely much better experts than me will be able to find more nuance in it. Very light the unmistakable tar flavor of Caroni. Velier as always, through its perseverance with the triple A rating, has released a noteworthy bottle. Velier gave me emotions that few others have been able to do.

Day 3 in the Advent calendar: My first impression was Jamaica, as some esters had collected in the covered glass. Otherwise, for me, very vegetable, a bit dirty, reminiscent of graphite. In retrospect, exactly the profile of a Clairin with Caroni notes, but unfortunately I didn't think of that at all. Exciting bottling, but none of my highlights!

RumX Advent calendar, 3rd December, blind. First impression: clearly Jamaica, not high- but rather low-ester. Not clearly Hampden, maybe WP or something. The rather vegetal notes at the end were confusing. I could have guessed Clairin, since I have the 21-month aged one here 🙈. Nose: Ester and vinegar! Not very fresh, rather dull. A slight honey sweetness comes, behind that some woodiness. Then the somewhat vegetal, reminds me of silver onions pickled in vinegar. At the very back, a bit of old tobacco. Palate: dry and slightly woody, again ester with some graphite-like and slightly sour notes. No clear fruit, rather again this vegetal, plant-like character. At the back, bitter and herbal going into grassy. Finish still has black tea. Very interesting!

11.02.2019 Enjoying some samples at home. Colour Light to medium dark in colour. Nose Fresh, faint wood, strawberries, light citrus, sugarcane, light mint, light mango, faint vegetal. Palate Balanced, round, fresh, faint wood, faint smoke, fruits, light citrus, light cherry, light mint, light herbal, light olive, faint salt. Finish Medium to long, fresh, balanced, faint wood, light cherry, faint citrus, spice, light herbal, light grass.

Day 3 RumX Advent Calendar: Again blind tasted. Had what herbal in the nose, slightly dirty. On the palate light ester notes, had to think of Jamaica. Could really not assess what this is. I like.

3rd sample of the advent calendar. Nose: Ester notes, grass, slightly fruity notes. Palate: Wood, roots, grass, plants, some "vegetables". Unfortunately, I could not perceive the Caroni barrel notes in the blind tasting.

28-03-2025 - Rate 6.9 I usually like Haiti very much. Clarin has not been my favorit in the past. This is one of the better ones. Can’t really taste the Caroni cask that much. A bit to low ABV. Decent for what it is. 27-09-2024 - Rate 7.5

The short aging is noticeable, when comparing this to its unaged cousins. It still has raw power, but the sharp edges are smoother. Wonderful to sip, and I assume it is also a good mixer.

#3 RumXCalendar Blind tasting: In the nose it reminds me on a classy hampden high ester, young wood. In mouth it‘s very elegant, delicious, young with notes of pineapple, mango. The finish is short and woody. Prediction: all in - RA Hampden High Ester…. totally wrong 🙈 Alcohol is integrated well. I can slightly recognize the caroni barrel. Nose: fruity ester, pineapple, solvents, citrus, sugar cane, young wood. Mouth: Dry, delicious, elegant, peat, solvents, oak (barrel), vanilla, roasted nuts, dark chocolate Finish: dry, tannins, astrongend, peat, young wood, vanilla

3.12.21 Rum calendar RumX: awesome stuff. Very surprising and versatile. Blind I was on Fiji but somehow not really😄 In hindsight the Caroni finish is clear. Blind I didn’t guess it. Great product, with versatile character. My first Clairin👌🏼

RumX advent calendar day 3. Not a lot of experience with Clairins. From the nose my best guess would have been something Jamaican, wrong about that. It’s very nice in the mouth, fruity and somewhat tarry with a bit of a earthy bitter finish.

Could also be used as a vinegar substitute on a Greek salad. Notes of cucumber and olive in the taste combined with fermented sheep cheese in the finish. Blind, due to the esters in the nose, I would have guessed a mild Jamaican. I don't notice anything from ex-Caroni here.
