The nutty, dark-chocolate side is what catches most people off guard here — you expect the usual soft Cuban caramel-and-vanilla and get roasted nuts, cocoa and a little bitter edge instead. Fifteen years shows in the woody, dried-fruit depth. Most call it a "nice sipper," though a couple found it too sweet and one flat-out artificial. Tastes lightly sweetened, and the 40.7% is on the gentle side.

At the second tasting I found myself surprised because I sensed new aromas on the palate. I was probably not at my best last time.A very pleasant rum with light barrel notes. Medium finish and albeit too low alcohol content. The low price plays in its favor. Cuban rums, and in Spanish in general, lack the courage to try stronger gradations.

Addendum from Saturday. I find this rum is a really good sipper, truly quite okay. On the nose nice caramel and vanilla, but also wood. On the palate a light sweetness and again caramel, vanilla and wood.

Quite fruity nose, despite the "low" alcohol content, slightly spicy. Vanilla and caramel too. On the palate, I feel more the woody notes of the barrel and dried fruit, but still a little "caramel" sweetness. Medium finish.

On The Rocks: On the nose lots of nuts with a little fruit and spice. The smell is a little more unique with this rum. Taste is strong Nutty notes with dark chocolate and some slight bitterness. This flavour trails off into a long finish with the bitterness with slight nutty notes. This is a very interesting rum with a more unique flavour profile. Mixed Pepsi Zero: On the nose slight caramel sweetness with mild nutty notes. Taste continues the caramel and nutty notes with much less bitterness and overall is very smooth and enjoyable. You could enjoy this rum nicely either way.

On the nose vanilla, a little leather, burnt sugar, caramel, chocolate, barrel, a hint of tobacco and dried fruits, not bad. The palate is delicate with wood, leather, caramel, vanilla, tobacco, chocolate, and in the finish a fine citrus/aspra note

For a moderate price you get a harmonious rum that integrates the darker notes typical of Cuba well and impresses with a smooth overall impression. Probably slightly sweetened. Nose: Nice scent of dark fruits (plums, raisins), plus subtle sweetness, nuts and present vanilla. Palate: Noticeably sweet and smooth-creamy on the tongue, with caramel, nuts, cocoa and some tobacco/leather. At the end it becomes drier and the oak spice comes through subtly. Finish: The finish is not particularly long. There is a subtle spice and at the end the aroma of dark chocolate emerges.
