I love Hampden, especially the DOKs, top class. Also here a great, ester-rich nose, again tropical fruits and some glue as well as solvent. On the palate also lots of esters and tropical fruits (as usual pineapple and banana).

Very first impression is: Immature, harsh, a lot of glue... not my cup of tea. However, after giving it some time it shows more complexity: Marzipan, fig, galia melon, apple compote, juniper and overripe pineapple. I'm actually starting to like it. Taste: Glue, apple, juniper, melon and almond Finish: Apple, raisin, glue and egg liquor.

8,4:On the nose, esters, glue, solvents, nail polish, funky, fermented, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, molasses with briny olive, fresh, pungent, chemical, some marzipan, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, spicy wood is out, meaty, some confectionery, herbaceous, hay-ish molasses, vinegar and dairy hints. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is intense, funky with esters, glue, chemical, metallic, dry and tannic, creamy with dairy, fermented tropical and citrus fruits, later red, berries and hints of dried fruits.Molasses is grassy, vegetal with briny olive, slightly sweet with hints of honeycomb, as wood is spicy with vanilla, allspice, ginger, smoky, tasty with fruitcake, pastry. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, with notes from palate lingering on, join with rubber, apple and slight pungency.

A real ester bomb that I probably would never have stumbled upon without Rumauctioneer. From nose to finish you taste esters, solvents, and overripe tropical fruits, especially pineapple. Wood notes are only very subtle. Alcohol perfectly integrated.

A rum that doesn't fool anyone: DOK reveals a very funky profile, with an explosion of esters, glue and solvents, very ripe tropical fruits and citrus. There are also notes of spice, vanilla, marzipan and wood, as well as a touch of freshness. The palate is heavy, oily and very aromatic, carried by a fruity, tannic and slightly spicy frame. The finish, marked by tannins, is on the other hand very short, quite thin and light with some fruit, esters and spices scents. It is a real pity that such an aromatic rum initially ends on such a disillusionment. It is nevertheless an example of the aromatic power that Hampden has to offer.

21.02.2020 A small private event where we borrowed the basement bar area for a private tasting and also had a go at their food. Notes. Light in colour. Nose Intense, light wood, banana, fruity, ester, glue. Palate Intense, wood, spicy, fruity, banana, ester, vegetal, glue. Finish Long and spicy, iodine, banana, anise, ester.

Edit: Added a tasting photo First time reviewing Jamaican rum with the highest esther "DOK"mark. Clear colour. On the nose: As expected, high ester and funky, overripe fruits like pineapple dominate. Also glue. Pleasant and balanced. Taste: Pleasant mouthfeel. Alcohol is integrated perfectly on this. Fruity, overripe fruits like pineapple mainly, but banana is there too. Esther, glue, but they dont dominate. Dry, with touch of sweetness from the fruits. Finish: Long finish. Little bit Woody, but mostly overripe flavour. This was distilled and matured perfectly. Esther felt surprisingly pleasant and this was overripe fruit forward pleasant sipper. The finish didnt quite deliver, but in overall very good rum so i would recommend.

Seltsame Farbe für einen 8 jahre gereiften Rum, zu hell. Aber in der nase schön fruchtig mit dezenten ester und Klebstoff Noten. Im geschmack kommt dann sogar ordentlich power, schöner fruchtkorb und Abgang ist auch angenehm.

Solid DOK, which I actually remembered better. All the typical notes are there (esters, tropical and yellow fruits, etc.), but the rum lacks complexity and some depth. A slight recurring off-note (sharp, bitter) also somewhat disturbs the overall impression. Still a good DOK, but for me not a very good one.

Wow - überreife Tropenfrüchte in Klebstoff. In der Nase erstmal sofort eine heftige Portion Klebstoff gefolgt von Ananas und Banane. Ein bisschen Aceton kommt auch noch hinzu Am Gaumen startet er adstringierend, und auch hier direkt der Klebstoff. Es folgt die Süße einer überreifen Ananas und einer ebenso sehr reifen Banane. Zusätzlich noch Mandel und ein Hauch von Vanille. Den Abgang ist mittellang und trocken. Es bleibt die Banane mit ein wenig Sternanis.

Aroma: explosion of tropical fruits — overripe bananas, mango, guava, anise, caramel, vinegar, iodine. A light note of cement glue and burnt pineapple rind creates a true alchemy of aromas. Taste: rich, oily, with hints of roasted pineapple, spices, iodine, vanilla and oak. Wild, complex and damn lively. Finish: long, warm, spicy butterscotch, pepper, vinegar, mango, oak spices.

The smell is pleasing, the first mouthfeel not quite. For me it takes a while, it develops most of its flavor after the finish, but longer. I find the finish pleasant, but most of the flavor stays in my mouth and doesn't come from the throat. Sounds strange, I admit. Would I get myself a bottle? No. But quite exciting from time to time.

Color - white wine, even lighter. Quite a lot of glue and esters, also multi-fruit juice, wood. In taste sharp glue, spicy oak, astringent, slightly sour and enveloping. Aftertaste mediocre.

Read full review →The nose is better than the sip. The nose suggested a five star rum. Whilst all the flavours the nose suggested are present there are a couple of off notes in the sip. It is a touch soapy/mouldy on the mid palate and a bit overly oaked on the finish....
