Chairman’s Reserve 1931 - 3eme édition
Burnt sugar, toffee and roasted chocolate-caramel sit at the center here, with a woody, spicy backbone and hints of tobacco, dried apple and licorice on a long finish. This third 1931 edition from Saint Lucia Distillers is rich on the nose but a touch thin and one-dimensional on the palate, and a few tasters wished for more punch than its 43%.
- Rich nutty nose
- Long spicy finish
- Toffee and tobacco

How does Chairman’s Reserve 1931 - 3eme édition taste?
Aggregated from 37 community reviews.
Woody, toffee-heavy St. Lucia sipper Most find it a well-built, tobacco-and-toffee St. Lucia sipper with a long spicy finish. The catches: it drinks a little thin, slightly one-note, and the added sugar shows.

I got the opportunity to taste this rare rum at Cane Rum Society in Stockholm when Dave Marsland brought a bottle from his own collection for us when he launched his book about St. Lucia sugarcane & rum history. This is the 3rd out of six limited editions in the 1931 series. Nowadays is the rum on the shelves named 1931 the number one unlimited rum from Chairman’s Reserve. For this, the third edition bottled in 2014 to celebrate 82 years since the Barnard family took over the Dennery distillery, they used distillates from all three pot stills and the Coffey column still. The different parts is aged from 6 and up to 15 years, primarily in American oak along with some port casks. 12gpl sugar was also added which is uncommon when it comes to SLD. The nose is rich, intense, nutty and woody with scents of honey, dried fruits and tobacco. At the palate it’s woody, creamy, spicy, sweet and a little thin with flavors of burnt sugar and toffee. During the finish, that’s rather long, it’s balanced, more intense and spicy with flavors of oak and licorice.

09.03.2025 Retasting with a couple of friends at our quarterly meet up. ____________________________ This 3rd release hit the nail spot on. Leave it for 15 minutes, at least, before giving it a go. The nose is a wealth of fruits and vanilla, in the back i can find tobacco and wet leather. The palate is spicy with fruit and smoky oak. A touch of licorice and toffee in the following sips. The finish is long and spicy with oak and licorice.

Yummy! Typical rum profile with caramel, wood, toasty/smoky and some dried fruit. The smoky can be more closely paraphrased as tobacco and with the fruit you can detect apple. Despite smoky tobacco on the nose, in the mouth then not as sharp as expected, but it tends more towards roasted chocolate caramel. Nothing remains of the fruit!

All together a very well put together rum. The nose is woody with some light ester and pot still notes alongside tropical fruit elements. The mouth is a bit one dimensional, with burnt sugar and cinnamon, and some nail varnish. There is an element of astringency and licorice on the finish and it seems slightly thin, although drinks above its ABV. I have had better Master’s Selection release but still a great rum with more interesting aspects than many
