A.H. Riise XO 1888 Copenhagen Gold Medal Rum

Best over ice or handed to someone who "doesn't really like rum" — that's where this A.H. Riise shines. Expect peach, candied orange, honey and vanilla, thick and syrupy, with a little ginger heat on the finish. Several tasters call it more dessert than rum, and one flat-out named it a "rhum bonbon." Real cask character stays in the background.

6,6:The nose announces a thick, sweet rum. It's a sort of mix of candy and berries, like a birthday party with tagada strawberries and grenadine. The caramelized sugar also makes you feel as if you're standing next to a cotton candy stand. A surprising air of lavender and citrus would have us think we were in Provence. Candied pomelo peel and fruits such as dried papaya bring a little freshness, or at least lift the rum a little from its syrupy side. The red fruits are confirmed with aeration, with a creaminess reminiscent of strawberry-milk lollipops. This is definitely a rhum bonbon, a concentrated syrup with a roundness all of its own. 5,5:The attack on the palate is very soft, with the thickness of a syrup and the sweetness of a confection. However, the candy is quite spicy and even pungent, like well peppered ginger. It remains rather light on the surface, gliding over the palate. Fruit candies melt on the tongue. 5:The finish will leave its mark on the taste buds for quite a long time, however, just the sweetness, a bit of a ginger flavor..

Day 21 of my Christmas Calendar. Still find it very sweet yet fruity. --------- I got a batch of samples and time to rate them. In general A. H. Riise rums are sweet and this one is no exception. A very sweet and fruity rum with some vanilla and caramel. I usually use these rums to spice up my icecream 😊

Flavors of warm spices, Christmas cake and orange peel, ending with a hint of English wine gums The aftertaste has notes of dried fruit, old oak and sherry

Expert review by The Dunder Hut

What a weird thing. It is a terrible rum and a terrible liqueur. It isn't quite alcoholic and unspectacular. I really don't get this. If I want a rum it's not good. If I want a sweet treat it is too alcoholic, expensive too!

Brand

Old St. Croix

Avg Rating 7.5/10 50 Rums

Old St. Croix is the current name of the Danish rum house that traded as A.H. Riise until June 2025. Both names point back to the same man: Albert Heinrich Riise, a pharmacist who settled in the Danish West Indies in 1838 and exported his rum under the Old St. Croix label. The house style is soft and dessert-leaning, built on sweetened blends rather than dry spirit, and it splits opinion in the community more than almost any other brand on RumX.
