Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Pleasant to drink blended Caroni without the really big highlights. Sweet LTR notes of vanilla and caramel, plus the tart tar and spice notes of the HTR style. Pleasing, but not top class. Clearly behind the Full Proof release of the same year.

A restrained Caroni DNA on the nose and finish, which is noticeable on the palate. But nice fruit notes such as cherry/apple and banana paired with more coconut than you are used to with Caroni. Great bottling, but slightly behind the FP version.

Nose and taste much more like a foursquare than a caroni!I miss all the dirty side of tar mixed with solvents typical of caroni and that complexity in their taste!A real shame!I was a little disappointed!

#4217 19.08.2023 we had our yearly meeting among old friends. When we do this once a year its without partners, cellphones and other gadgets. Just some nice rums, a piece of paper and a pen and most fun of all, a blind tasting. The theme of 2023 was Caroni and we had a great time and spend no less then 10 hours talking and tasting. Now to the bottle. Pretty good Caroni and it was bought when released at a very good price. A fruity Caroni in my mind, but still with some rubber and tar. Wood and roasted/smoky notes were really well balanced as was the ABV. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has more smoke and some mint.

Somehow I suspect that this sample was a loser. I don't find it alcoholic at all as I have read in other reviews. Rather the opposite, quite flat and thin. For me a rather easy sipping Caroni that contains more caramel than dirty notes. Nothing that would be worth the money for a bottle at the current price.

Svincany Caroni tasting 19.12.2024 For me, with Caroni from 1991 (which is generally my favorite vintage), the question is always - is it Caroni enough? Or is it a good rum? The Caroni profile is only lightly present here. But it is good.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the height of its glory a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums 'you need to try before you die'. I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Many thanks to Pavel Spacek for the sample. Blind, I would probably have guessed a tropical-aged Guyana column still here, the profile is very similar. The typical Caroni markers are very far in the background. Alcohol is wonderfully integrated. Very pleasant, but it lacks some complexity.

A blended Caroni with an unusual profile, and you can feel it right from the first nose. The aromas are shy and quite peculiar by Caroni standards: red fruits, apple, raisins, and banana gradually reveal themselves alongside woody, roasted, hazelnut, and slightly buttery notes (maybe even a bit rancid, actually). The spices are mild, accompanied by caramel, vanilla, and a very light medicinal tone. The nose reminds me of a rather heavy Foursquare but is far from the aromatic expression of its Trinidadian peers. The profile is oily and very discreet on the palate. Red fruits (cherry), raisins, pear, and exotic fruits (banana) are a bit more pronounced, as are the empyreumatic notes (rubber, tar, medicinal) that finally show up. You find the sweetness of caramel, hazelnut, vanilla, and spices. A touch of alcohol is noticeable despite the apparent dilution. A Caroni whose profile has structural gaps; it lacks flair and complexity to be dazzling. The finish is pale, even compared to the nose and palate. The aromas are dull and fade quickly, leaving only a slight woody, herbal, tannic, and roasted impression on the palate. Some fruity and caramelized hints appear on the side, but overall it leaves a bitter aftertaste compared to expectations. An easy-to-drink Caroni that sits on the lighter branch of Trinidad, with a muted and too fragile profile to compete with the heavyweights of the genre.
