Dried apricot, glue and tobacco in the nose, then wood, leather, spice and a little coffee once it opens up. The 17 years show as deep, dry oak. Almost everyone loves the nose; the palate splits people — several find it drier and hotter, with the alcohol more present than the 61.6% suggests. One taster even caught sweet-wine and Calvados notes in the finish.

On the nose come exciting notes towards green apple, herbaceous freshness, dried fruit, milk chocolate and caramel, but also a fair amount of solvent. On the palate, however, the Depaz comes across quite gruff, alcoholic spiciness, lots of (young) barrel, apple, salty finish. The nose convinces, on the palate, unfortunately, he can not keep up.

Franconian Tasting Gang on 19.04.2024 In the Agricole Battle, Neisson Straight from the Barrel No.26, No.252 and the Depaz CS 2002 Barrel 706 (which here is the unfair opponent) compete. No.26 can be drunk, is already good, No.252 is somewhat better but the Depaz clearly wins here against the other two. It is simply a different league.

Second tasting: I like very much, today I find in the aftertaste even Calvados! ( 2)Nose: the first thing I notice is that the alcohol is very restrained, nothing bites and stings the nose. And then there is a striking similarity with sweet wine (Trockenbeerenauslese)Palate: nothing more of sweet wine but strong alcohol and much barrel influence and floral notes. Slight resemblance to cognac.Finish: cool, the impression of sweet wine comes back again! Very good rum, a bottle I would not buy. For me it is too woody and too expensive, but I'm glad I have a sample.

Glue, glue and then dried fruit on the nose. Warm, round, complex.In the mouth then similar, but more wood and very herbal. With water then cookie dough.Very good Agricole. 62% is great integrated. Drinks really well.

Our Agricole Flight tonight: Neisson straight from the barrel no26 vs. No252 vs. (somewhat unfairly) the Depaz cask strength 2002 barrel 706 26 is quite nice, I like 252 a little better but the Depaz is the clear, much more mature and interesting winner with a great nose (with very light jackfruit/overripe mango and some glue) and a rich palate.

The long time in the cask is clearly visible in this rum. Less fruit and caramel, more spice, wood, many smoke associations like tobacco, molasses, licorice. Dry and bitter on the palate with the heavy cask aromas. Not a harmoniously round or extremely balanced rum, but still a well-made representative.

Very strange overproof Agricole as it shows strong tendencies to some high ester Jamaicans. Lots of compost and esters on the nose the first 10 minutes and also slightly fermented and salty in the background taste-wise. So for me, a bit difficult to judge. Agricole character still comes through but this unusual funk keeps coming in! Also, the alcohol is unfortunately very present and not well integrated.

Great agricole, has everything you want. A slight sweetness is noticeable thanks to vanilla and caramel, but it is also quite spicy and woody. Coffee, leather, and dark chocolate are also detectable.

A Depaz both super tasty and very puzzling. The nose is gourmand and aromatic, notes of dried and tropical fruits mix with floral notes, spices, wood as well as coffee and milk chocolate. You feel a hint of glue that pairs well with the sweeter and caramelized side. Conversely, the palate reveals a much rougher and drier rum, leaning towards herbal, vegetal and floral flavors, spices and wood. You feel a hint of bitterness, leather and an original salty side in addition. The finish is warm, long, focused on spices, dried fruits, hay and menthol. A very complete, complex rum at an still affordable price, but it would have been superb with more fruit and gourmandise on the palate.

I really like the nose. Dried fruits, vanilla, cinnamon, slightly floral with a subtle sweetness. On the palate intense with lots of spices, wood and a good portion of leather, unfortunately also relatively bitter for my taste. Nose -> Top, palate -> Okay.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang / 2024-04-19: Neisson Straight from the Barrel No. 26 vs. No. 252 vs. Depaz 2002 Barrel 706 The Depaz 2002 easily wins the comparison against the two Neisson releases. But since the line-up wasn't quite fair, it has to face the Depaz 2010 from RumClub the next day. Both very fruity and spicy on the nose. The 2002 maybe a bit spicier, I like it slightly better here. On the palate, the 2002 shows a bit more maturity, but the alcohol is much more intrusive, although it has less than 2% more ABV. Overall a tie, with a slight tendency to the 2002. After another 20 minutes in the glass, the preference on the nose shifts again. Now I tend back to the RumClub 😂

The nose plunges me into an Italian bar where they sell those breakfast croissants with coffee and amaro. The palate is dominated by bitter herbs that stimulate taste and appetite. The finish is superb, both simple (more or less bitter herbs) and very complex (all kinds of herbs).

This is a lovely and very well balanced rum and once rested you get the full experience. Make sure to save the empty glass for a few hours and then nose it again to get stronger notes of chocolate and spices. The nose is balanced, fresh and fruity with tobacco and light wood and chocolate. The chocolate is more obvious in the empty glass after a while. The palate is complex and very well balanced and fresh with wood, dried fruit, spice and light chocolate and coffee. The finish is long and oily with wood, dried fruit and chocolate. Price to quality is very good.

On the nose it is strong and pungent, slightly acidic, with solvents/tar, fruit jam, tobacco, milk chocolate and cachaça. On the palate warm and enveloping with notes of solvent/tar, red fruit, wood, salt and spices with a distant floral idea that accompanies the acidic and bitter finish typical of Depaz which in my taste makes it lose some points. Anyway ABV perfectly integrated and fairly persistent finish Thanks JakobM

Magnificent nose of vanilla, spices, apple, dried fruits, caramel and a hint of lime zest. The palate is just a little below, we lose the fruits, it's drier on leather, wood and spices, soap and walnut. Very nice release from Depaz.

Just poured, very closed, very woody and dried fruit. But hints of overripe notes, important esters of fruit like banana and papaya can be glimpsed. On the nose, the two hemispheres have two completely different scents, on the left fruit and on the right peanuts. Tea, fruit, vegetal, wood. I never would have expected such a complete product... To buy and drink.

To be honest, the nose bothers me, a herbaceous inner tube that fades with time, The palate is typical agricultural spicy with the gourmand notes typical of Depaz 2002, I should taste it again under better conditions

At first nose I immediately got nuts / walnuts coming out. After analysis, I have a nice damp wood side and some indulgence. Alcohol very well integrated, I hardly feel it on the nose. After reading, I get fruits with apple standing out. On the palate, it stings a bit more, it's lively and fresh. The alcohol is more present but remains properly integrated. On the finish, the freshness fades and gives way to the damp wood I felt and the fruits. Big contrast between the entry on the palate and the return of the finish, super pleasant because it's not linear.
