Habitation Velier Privateer New England Single Rum 2017
Here's the surprise: at just 3 years old, this American rum tastes more like a young bourbon than anything Caribbean, though a few tasters catch a Barbados-style edge. Expect vanilla, caramel, coconut and burnt oak with plenty of spice. Members like it for the age but many note it drinks hot and fades fast — "complex for such a young rum," as one put it.

How does Habitation Velier Privateer New England Single Rum 2017 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Young, bourbon-style rum, hot but flavorful Well-liked for its age, with vanilla, caramel and burnt oak in a bourbon-leaning style. The common gripes: alcohol not fully tucked in, a short fade, and it can read like plain bourbon.

The nose is quite light and on the palate it’s cocoa, chocolate, bourbon.

Incredibly boring rum. The spirit offers nothing more than some sweetness and caramel. Blind you could also guess a bland bourbon here. Alcohol is well integrated, in other words the rum is totally watered down.
Review by Timo Groeger
Then finally a privateer. This is more in the sweeter corner. Caramel and vanilla stand out on the nose and palate. The palate is quite alcoholic, however, and the alcohol could be better integrated.
Review by mto75
can unfortunately not completely convince 😒 smells like sawmill and has a strange resinous-floral note that seems rather intrusive. Also very woody on the palate. The 3 years of maturity are perhaps a bit short.

I got this bottle yesterday and couldn't wait until the weekend with the tasting. This is a relatively light rum and I had expected a rum with more punch to it. The nose has bourbon on it with sweet caramel and heavy vanilla notes with a bit of coconut. The palate is dominated by caramel with a lot of spices and you can really taste the burnt molasses. The finish is long and has burnt oak and spices that linger for very long.

Tipo much bourbon cask infouey, and oak

This Rum is a good example of American Rum, that seems to target the home market and thus has nuances of other prevailing spirits there, like bourbon. It is nice, but not exceptional... Reminds me of Bourbon as well as some Babados Rums.
Review by Christoph
Both in taste and finish quite salty notes mixed with cocoa / chocolate. Fruits are sought here rather in vain. Whether a "normal" bourbon would taste different in a blind tasting is a moot point.
Review by Boletus
This rum from the Privateer Distillery has the same basic character as the bottlings I've tasted from the distillery so far and differs only in nuances. The barrels seem to have been perhaps a bit more heavily charred, as a slight wood smoke note lingers in the finish, and occasionally there is a slight alcoholic bite to be felt, but otherwise it shows the usual cozy mix of bourbon-like barrel aromas with lots of caramel, vanilla and coconut.
Review by Frank
An alcoholic freshness flows into the nose with a fine fruitiness of orange and mandarin. Behind that, something leathery with a hint of vanilla and a resinous spice. On the palate, no more fruitiness. Here, bitter to salty spice dominates. Nutmeg, pepper, and clove, woody and roasted. Maybe a slight tobacco note... In the finish remains the slightly bitter woody-spicy taste. I like the scent better than the taste. For the young age, quite impressively full...
Review by Thunderbird
A pleasant nose of vanilla, caramel and some alcohol, on the palate the spice dominates, slightly peppery, caramel and toffee, this note continues in the finish! A nice rum, quite good for its age, but somehow fleeting!
Review by Gil Firth
Bottle. Honestly, I wasn't that impressed by Privateer. But this bottle is very nice! Not too sweet. Strong. Impressions like grain or bourbon with a little bit of lacquer, banana, chocolate, caramel. High level for something 3 years old that wasn't in the Caribbean. I wouldn't buy another bottle but glad I had it.
Review by Stijn Zino
This is a very pleasant easy drinking rum. Bourbon style, lots of vanilla, fruity and sweet. Something you van serve to anybody. Nothing too special but I enjoy this one. Don't think it's worth the price though.

Complex for such a young rum
Review by Carlito
Not bad at all for such a young rum, it’s good, with intensity in the mouth and a start of complexity. Looking forward to tasting a more mature version…
Review by BnBrt
Interesting rum while being quite easy. Ideal to start the evening. Vanilla nose, a bit of ester and fruit. Interesting attack on the palate that makes me think of carrot (!). Quite soft, vanilla. Short finish, sweet caramel/wood. With a bit of water, citrus notes (grapefruit) persist.
Review by Adrien B
Very bourbon-like, as is often the case with them, I feel. It's divisive. I like it.
Review by Mathieu C.
Very "Barbadian" profile but with much more present alcohol here.
Review by Abrahan Reyes
I was given a sample of this rum. Made by Privateer, a company located in Massachusetts, for Velier. Double distilled with a Vendome still and then using a custom batch still. From imported molasses and no additives. Is a blend containing 3 to 4 years. On the nose: vanilla, caramel. On the palate: Sweet vanilla, and some chocolate. The ending is short. Has some Barbadian flare. It tastes quite good for sipping. Now my only beef is the price, around 100 dollars which I think is way too much. In that price range, you can get better rums like the ECS series from Foursquare to name one. I will comfortably pay around 45 dollars or so.

This rum seems like it has an identity and knows what it’s doing. It’s a very alcohol and woody/ roasted flavor forward rum. It isn’t completely a one trick pony though. There’s some notes in the background behind the smoke that make you think a bit. Very enjoyable sipping rum.
Review by Big Greasy Daddy
A solid rum. The nose and finish aren’t great, fairly alcoholy… while the taste is a pleasant surprise. Roasted with a bit of funk and balanced with the oak.
Review by Daniel
Strongly reminiscent of the typical flavor profile of Barbados. However, still a bit sharp and uneven, which is not surprising given its age.
Review by Richard Krupa
Caramel with deep spices that linger long in the mouth, pleasant sweetness and just the right amount of alcohol for me.
Review by Happy Oner
Moc alkoholovy

One of the few American rums I have tasted yet, but a decent one. Classic rum profile, that might remind you of bourbon and with a sense of sweetness without getting cloying in the mouth. In a way this sometimes reminds me of Beenleigh.

Read full review ›I think I am getting glimpses of that but curiosity would lead me to want to try Privateer unaged. This is a solid but unspectacular start to the Habitation Velier Privateer collaboration. I've had better from both Velier and Privateer and I am sure something better will come in time....
