Rhum Chantal Comte Maison La Mauny La Tour De L'Or 2005

Black pepper leads here, backed by oak, coffee, dark chocolate and roasted almonds, with red and dried fruit peeking through. It's an intense, oily Martinique agricole from La Mauny, bottled by Chantal Comte at cask strength. Most tasters call it complex and beautifully balanced — a few just wish the pepper eased off. One reviewer blind-tasted it and guessed Foursquare, not agricole.

We're tasting this one right now and we can all agree that it's a very good rum. We are however not entirely in sync on the nose and palate :-) The me the nose is full of spice mixed with some fresh cherries. Then comes almond and coffee with a nice oak finish. The palate is complex, intense and very well balanced with fruits, nougat and vanilla in the front. In the back i can get caramel, coffee and oak. The finish is very long with vanilla and toffee sliding into some barrel feel.

On the nose, wood and solvent, papaya and banana, floral and herbaceous. Very complex, with all aromas harmoniously blended. The palate is calm on entry, with wood taking the lead, followed by the other aromas, ending with a magnificent finish in which all the flavors play their part. The empty glass brings further aromas of yellow fruit, pear and quince. A splendid rum, dense and austere, complex and full-bodied.

Beautiful nose. Oak dominates, followed by a great glue note and then fruit. Balanced, alcohol well integrated, fresh. In the mouth then a wild ride. Very peppery and powerful. Balanced again on the finish. Very good overall. A very good Agricole, but lacks the brilliant elegance of its two brothers. And meanwhile there is an abundance of similar Agricoles of comparable quality.

Maison La Mauny is one of Martinique's giants, a hangar of five column stills in the southern hills above the Riviere-Pilote. Owned by Campari since 2019, it is the island's second-largest producer and the engine room behind three brands: its own La Mauny, plus Trois Rivieres and Duquesne, whose closed distilleries live on through the original stills moved here.
