The surprise here is the sweetness — for a tar-and-rubber Caroni, several tasters found real tropical fruit and a soft "Süße" underneath. A 2000 single cask from Velier at a monster 70.3%: motor oil, petrol, oak and leather up front, with pineapple and chocolate showing through. One reviewer even caught a grappa-like, almost vegetal note. The alcohol runs hot and wild, but it lands where fans want it.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: on the one hand, still rather wild, which is due to the alcohol, but also to the comparatively young age; on the other hand, already with a pronounced sweetness that accompanies the tar and motor oil notes throughout. It is precisely this combination that makes the rum extremely appealing and puts it in the top tier of 2000s releases.

Good 2000 Caroni. With this high alcohol content, a lot is to be expected. Integration ok, flavor volume too. Nevertheless, this single cask ranks behind Nitz and Paradise #5 (unbeatable 2000).

A rum tasted in a restaurant, the bottle well opened. A nose of grappa, strong in alcohol, vegetal, like a reminiscence of rhum agricole, rare at Caroni. On the palate, the alcohol hits hard and the workshop notes are present alongside tropical fruits with a clear smoky edge. My favorite Caroni of the evening, a little strong in alcohol, but otherwise delicious. The empty glass reveals other vegetal and even floral aromas. A fresh, youthful Caroni, but the alcohol is a little too present.

14.03.2020 Had a nice afternoon and evening with friends. Notes. Light to medium dark. Nose: wood, roasted, citrus, dried fruit, tar, light rubber. Palate: oily, wood, roasted, chocolate, rubber, tar, caramel, orange. Finish: very long, wood, dried fruit, caramel, light rubber.

Delicious 2000 Caroni with the typical gasoline note but also a sweetness of tropical fruits. Some pineapple for me. Not quite at the level of Paradise 5 (from memory) but still very strong

What an epic evening with one flight after another, indescribable. I’ll spare any individual comment because sometimes I’m at a loss for words. Many thanks to Jakob. All in all, they were all excellent as you can see from the ratings and differ only in nuances. All top level 🤤😋

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.
