Licorice, anise and dark spice sit over dried fruit and a faint smoky edge in this Port Mourant from Bristol. Several tasters call it a classic PM profile, drier than most, with peach and apricot hovering underneath oak. The recurring gripe: at 46% it's been reduced a touch far, so the finish thins out and the wood can turn a little bitter.

#6749 05.05.2026 Speed hiking done and wife picked up from work. Time for some samples and some Trance Tracks on Spotify. This is a pretty OK bottling and the price tag is also good in my mind. Would have loved a higher ABV though. A medium fruity rum with nice anise, olive and chocolate.

Looking at the set of Bristol‘s 99 PM bottlings from 11y to 23y: On the nose all bottlings come with a good intensity despite the reduced ABV. All are transporting classic PM notes, showcasing the profile at different points in time. Particularly the 11y was a positive surprise compared to some 2010ish younger continental PMs. The sweetspot for me comes with the 15y - display a nice balance of cask notes (including dried fruits) and some lifeliness. 16y comes with a noticeable smokey notes. At 23y both bottlings show a bit too much wood on the nose, somewhat closing the profile up instead of enhancing it significantly. On the palate all six bottlings show a decent amount of sweetness (candied herbs) even up to the 23y bottlings. For the latter two, wood and herbal notes clearly take over, taking the lifeliness of the younger bottlings. Those are nice and mature, but again I‘m feeling the sweetspot at the 15y mark here. The 15y adds dried fruits versus the 16y delivering some smoke - similar to the nose. The low ABV isn’t what I would have wished for. However, intensity is decent - only the finish seems to lose quite a bit. Cheers to Johannes for curating this set :)

In the test a few Bristol Port Mourants from 1999, the RX3898 (11yr), the RX21891 (23yr), the RX506 (15yr) and the RX5733 (16yr). What they all have in common is that they are all relatively heavily reduced and thus lack a bit of strength. But consistently solid, though unfortunately not 100% convincing. In terms of ranking, I liked the 15yr best. The 23yr in second place, followed by the 11yr and 16yr.

The nose is focused on earthy-herbal notes. And we find licorice and anise. But not only that, there’s also raisins, wood and leather. The nose is familiar, but complex and interesting. On the palate, it’s spicy and quite intense even at 46%. It’s not perfectly balanced, even slightly alcoholic. There is an astringency or a slightly disturbing bitterness due to this predominance of wood. But luckily tropical fruits help soften that. The finish is warm and rather dry on the aniseed wood. The conclusion is that this PM is a good representation of this still, it lacks a bit of indulgence and is therefore dedicated to friends of drier rums. It reminds me a bit of its brother, the El Dorado Rare Collection PM 99.

Bristol PM Crosstasting #4: generally shows an upward trend, which stalls a bit with this bottling. Similar to the predecessor, with additional pastry notes on the nose. On the nose, alongside tropical fruits also dried fruits.

The nose is not unpleasant. Very sweet at first, but also too much alcohol at the start. You can still detect fruity touches: a soft fruit like peach or apricot. Almost a candy. Once in the mouth, everything collapses: alcohol and bitterness. The reduction was brutal. It's watery and flat. For a Diamond 1999, it's far from the mark. The finish is less bad, but not much more pleasant. And unfortunately, it lingers quite a while in the mouth.

Classic PM profile with lots of fruit impact, bitter dark spices of allspice, anise, licorice as well as cask notes, some herbs and roasted aromas. Despite the fruit fairly dry, the dilution works very well and lets the complexity of the distillate shine nicely.

Nose: First nose on a slight caramel that quickly dissipates and gives way to light esters, tropical fruits, as well as vegetal and quite fresh notes. The opening confirms these notes adding banana, spices especially vanilla and a metallic side. We have a nice charming, gourmand, typical and well-balanced nose, all restrained. This very "light" side for a 16-year-old Guyana is probably due to mostly continental aging without knowing exactly the duration. Mouth: Dry at first and well marked wet wood which gives way to coppery metallic notes, pepper, sweet vanilla spices and a bit of almond that bring indulgence to the whole. The tropical fruits, although still present, are now clearly in the background. Finish: Medium to long on spices, coppery notes and a slight bitterness at the very end which is not unpleasant. Opinion: Very interesting. A typical dying port, but on discreet notes and not too much on wet wood with a very beautiful nose that brings more indulgence than the mouth offering in the end a beautiful complexity for this rum. The only downside... its price! I don't think I'm ready to pay such a price for this bottle.
