One taster called the nose "horrible" — burnt plastic and karting-track exhaust — then admitted the palate wins you back. That's this 1998 Caroni: tar, banana and coffee up front at 55%, but with an unusual floral streak of rose and violet running underneath. A few note sherry-cask red fruit and rubber too. Powerful, heavy, and long on a warm finish.

Mild and sweet but low Caroni ... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad that produced, at the height of its glory, rum which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and was closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it; Caroni is truly a unique rum.

The nose has fewer empyreumatic notes than usual with Caroni, it's dense, fruity (banana) but then the typical Caroni markers appear with the starting line of a karting race. On the palate, it's powerful and heavy, we find the banana from the nose, varnish and we return to the exhaust pipes of our karting race. But what strikes me most about this Caroni are its vegetal and floral notes (rose-violet). The finish is warm and it's good. A true pirate rum as the label announced!

First Caroni for me.. Quite approachable.. Horrible nose with this burnt plastic taste.. Better on the palate.. Mix of coffee and tar... It's very particular.
