8,8:On the nose, the influence of American oak predominates. It does so beautifully, with soft wood, vanilla, blond tobacco, toasted coconut and a certain sweetness that enriches these aromas. Aeration gives the rum a slightly more conquering side, which then brings out the pepper and smoke. The tobacco is a little browner, and the cane molasses brandy shows a fine concentration, even if the roundness is still palpable. 8,7:On the palate, the rum is terribly tasty. Once again, it's the American oak that does most of the work, and we've really made the most of its qualities. With a light smoky attack, the aromas of vanilla, mocha, red fruits, coconut, oily wood and tobacco are truly thick and delicious. 8,7:The finish maintains this greediness with a certain sweet roundness, we cannot miss Tiramisu 😃. Normally, I’m not a big fan of smoky aromas, but here it’s very subtle and fits well into the overall picture. Clear caramel sweetness meets wood and roasted notes, round and tasty! More of a rum for beginners to intermediate drinkers... the profile definitely suits my taste and it’s worth having tried it. Solid Spanish rum with high intensity despite only 40%.

Got this 5cl sample in my second batch from Rum Ratings Tasting Club and participated in the virtual tasting yesterday. The Abuelo XII Two Oaks is a 12yo rum stored in two different types of oak barrels. First on traditional Tennessee whiskey / bourbon casks during 11 years, and then a final storage on deep-fried casks of new American white oak. It’s produced from both molasses and sugar cane juice by Varela Hermanos. The sugar content is 24 gpl, so it’s sweet but not extremely sweet.

Though a rum in the cheaper end of the scale you still get a pretty good rum. Sweet and fruity with some smoke and wood. I like the caramel note in the profile. Draws nice curtains and the empty glass is nice after a while.

Also a very tasty Abuelo, maybe even a bit better than the XV Tawny. On the nose and palate a nice vanilla and caramel flavor. You taste a slight, perfectly fitting sweetness. Delicious.

very tasty intense Panama notes. Reddish / smoky and also woody. Of course, also relatively sweet. compared to the Abuelo 12 but relatively similar. the storage in freshly burned out barrels but is quite noticeable by more intense barrel flavors. in the taste, the tannins are clear which make the rum a little more bitter what remains especially long in the finish

From start to finish, this rum is all about wood, or barrel. The intense smell and taste are the result of an excellently balanced barrel aging. The sweetness is perfectly balanced and the finish simply round.

Surprisingly good for the sugar content. On the nose actually still pleasantly complex, in the mouth the sugar is then disturbing and the alcohol still noticeably present. It was a gift, I wouldn't buy it again but it will be drunk ;)

Thick caramel and prunes in their own juices on the nose followed by a freshly opened tin of pipe tobacco. The palate has the caramel and prunes from the nose but now these present more like a coffee with syrups in. Not clawing but it is sweet. The finish is medium in length. Roasted nuts and dark chocolate notes mainly. Overall a great rum. Something that you could drink a few glasses of without getting boring.

At the first sip, Panama directly on the palate, slight sweetness, vanilla, caramel, cocoa, wood, and a light coffee. Easy sipper that doesn't overwhelm. Especially a good drop for beginners and slightly advanced.

In the nose, there's a heap of smoky wood, vanilla, and caramel. On the palate, there's initial sweetness and woody barrel notes. Overcooked sugar turns into intense bitterness after a while. Definitely one of the more interesting pieces Panama can offer.

Wow, very impressive! Not from my usual trend since it is not very sweet but it is absolutely refreshing. This rum truly tastes of wood and spice. I would recommend it for any rum lover since it can cater to a variety of preferences. Has definitely made my rum list!

Sweet at first but then the taste opens and show more detailed notes such as caramel, burnt sugar, oak, spiciness from the charred oak barrel and finishes up in slight bitterness. It is more than medium sweet but nicely balanced. Interesting rum but definitely missed it's price tag. I would be down to paying max 35€. More than that is pure nonsense to me. Retaste: Agree 100% with my previous tasting.

Extraordinary nose! No doubt Abuelo knows how to seduce with its aromas! Obvious oak barrel, you feel like you are in Bordeaux! Caramel, vanilla and fig. Very straightforward on the alcohol and spirit where the rum fades quite a bit. This rum is made more for whisky lovers.

Quite pleasant on the nose, with smells that still revolve strongly around wood (smoked, oak, cask) and a slight smell of very ripe prunes. On the palate quite soft and round, not too sweet and a fairly long woody finish.

Since I'm into smoky aromas, the nose starts off quite nicely in that direction, plus some vanilla, coffee, and dried fruits. On the palate then caramel, roasted aromas, fruity and sweet. Medium-long finish. Overall a well-rounded thing "for every day".

The nose is pleasing, the white oak barrels make themselves noticed. Vanilla, caramel, a bit of smoke, and a hint of coffee join in. On the palate, unfortunately, the sweetness dominates, other flavors like smoke and vanilla are a bit overwhelmed by it. The finish reminds me of thin sugar syrup, accompanied by a slight pepperiness. Not a bad rum, but I definitely don't see it at the community average of 8.0. I'll re-taste it in the next few days, tonight I can't really get excited about this drop. Addendum: I've now re-tasted it, my rating remains the same.

There is a smoky scent and flavor that I did not pick up at first. I have liked many Ron Abuelo‘s in the past, and this was no exception. I tried it mixed, which was equally smoky and very nice; but this is definitely a sipper.

When I tried this rum (first from Abuelo). I was stunned. It is cheap and really good. Ok, there is some sugar content added, but I haven´t found better rum for every occasion than this one. Great for beginners and enjoyable for advanced drinker.

Read full review ›I think Abuelo rums are solid Spanish-style rums, with the 12, Two Oaks, or finishes standing out above average. If you like smooth, slightly sweet or sweeter Spanish-style rums, this is definitely something for you. Don't expect wildness from Haiti or Jamaica or high alcohol percentages, that would be a completely different story, but Abuelo plays its role very well in its category.
