Lemon Hart & Son Original 1804

6.9/10
19 community reviews ↓

Drink it in a cocktail and it earns its keep — a Guyana demerara with butterscotch on the nose, caramel, molasses and walnut underneath. Neat, several tasters call it light and straightforward, "no depth or complexity," with some wood and bitterness. The nose is the high point; one reviewer says it "smells fantastic." Reads sweet, probably dosed.

  • Butterscotch nose
  • Good in cocktails
  • Round, sweet caramel

How does Lemon Hart & Son Original 1804 taste?

Aggregated from 19 community reviews.

Sweet demerara, best as a mixer A decent demerara mixer with a lovely butterscotch nose, but it falls flat neat — light, a bit bitter, and outshone by El Dorado and other Guyana bottles people compare it to.

Perfect for

People who want a sweet, neutral demerara base for cocktails

Less suitable for

Anyone chasing depth neat or avoiding added sugar

Rich and round. Relatively high level of sweetness. Roasted almonds and cinnamon with a touch of maple on the palate.

This one has neither the abrasive burnt tones of Skipper demerara nor the smoothness and roundness of the El Dorado expressions. It’s a good cocktail rum for a relatively neutral demerara taste (but do you really want that?) but kind of hard to recommend given the options.

Bought is as a mixer when I was trying to find a 151 Demerara (but that’s close to impossible over here) Neat it’s very straight forward, but has no depth or complexity in the flavor. Useable mixer, but not convincing.

Has of course something of Demerara... strong memories of the engine room in the ship - diesel and heavy oil... who likes it... theoretically good replacement to the Pusser's in Painkiller... but does not fit at all ...
