"How the f**k does this smell like cola?" — one taster's reaction sums it up. This 1984 Velier Caroni carries the usual tar, rubber and machine-shop notes, but layers on a striking Coca-Cola sweetness, tropical fruit, chocolate and coffee. At 54.6% the age shows in the tannins, which one member found a touch dominant on the finish. A love-it-or-hate-it early Velier.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Strikingly pronounced notes of cola on the nose, apart from that HTR meets subtle pastry notes and fresh citrus aromas of tropical fruits. On the palate, the typical tar and gum notes come to the fore, with the tropical fruits remaining recognizable alongside the caramel-vanilla sweet notes on the finish. A great Caroni that has some new flavor combinations to offer (cola!) and is thus independent.

A terribly balanced nose of machine shop and tropical fruit (if you can call it that). A nose that makes you want to go further immediately. Tropical fruit is also on a par with yellow fruit. The palate opens with a touch of menthol. Then fruit, herbaceous notes, machine shop, all arrive at once. An intriguingly sweet aftertaste... of cola. Yes, as in Coca-Cola! The finish is fresh and fruity, with a hint of frost. The empty glass offers fairly pronounced Caroni markers and still a slight Cola.

Fortunately I have a reserve sample and a whole bottle, but maybe I will never open that one, or maybe in time I will change my mind, anyway it was better when they cost the right amount, nowadays it is too much, but too much really. The nose is very complex, fragrant and so balanced. In the glass it has a nice color and is very viscous. The non-excessive alcohol content helps it a lot, I think it's perfect for the complexity of the product as the aging pretty much takes over. Many notes on the nose are those of the distillery with hints that I have not encountered in other drinks. On the palate it's very pleasant with all the notes of the distillery with tropical aging, with the difference of slightly different notes, let's say sweetish and sour together. With time it opens up on both nose and palate with some herbaceous notes and the classic tar that distinguishes them. Small note is the tannin, it is felt and quite incisive as well, aging is felt throughout, those who like it let's say it's fine, while if they don't like it it might disturb quite a bit. Convulsion: typical of the first releases of these series, you either love them or hate them. In my opinion it's very complex and balanced and should be enjoyed slowly and time and maybe on several occasions. The sweet/sour note for me gives it a different twist!

Yesterday we had a great evening in my friends man-cave. Lots of laughter and wonderful rums. This one was a bit too dominant on the oak in the end of the palate and especially in the finish.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

A truly bewitching fragrance. It's so fragrant, you could do more than one nose. I was expecting a much more tarry and salty nose, but the balance is perfect between wood, menthol, varnished fruit and cola. The nose evolves slowly but remains very round. The palate opens with a beautiful, well-balanced attack. A delicate woodiness accompanies eucalyptus, tar, chocolate and blackcurrant. A long finish, ending after several minutes on blackcurrant with a bitter woody/licorice stick note. All in all, it's magnificent
