13.11.2020 A cosy evening at home with some friends and good rum. Notes Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose Light wood, faint smoke, complex, light anise, faint herbal, faint floral, dried fruit, light tar, faint rubber. Palate Oily, intense, wood, lightly spicy, fruits, cherry, spices, light tar, faint rubber, faint chocolate. Finish Long, wood, light roasted, intense, warm, cherry, spice, light tar.

Real rarities and feel like rums from another time. The high % leads to a great flavor development and the alcohol is actually well integrated. We found this one slightly better than the 69.0, as it was able to convey a little more sweetness and complexity. However, both versions are at a very high level. Not comparable to the tropical Velier Caronis, but strong representatives in their own right.

Nice to have had the 1996 Rendsburger Bürgermeister Caroni in a glass. Alcohol is well integrated, pleasant sweetness, dirty notes, slightly fruity, wood. Everything is very well balanced. Beautiful Caroni.

Blind tasting: a very deep, full and complex nose. At the beginning, adorned with the sweetness and fruit basket of old tropical Guyana rums, raisins and marzipan, transitioning into a dirtiness of nail polish remover and petroleum. Caroni is already clearly recognizable here. It is also already apparent here, especially in comparison to Sample 4, that it must have a few more years under its belt. The palate also directly confirms the age assessment in comparison to sample 2. The rum is somewhat astringent at the beginning and then turns into a pleasant creaminess, which makes for a great mouthfeel. It comes in at around 60% and should definitely be older than the comparison candidate Sample 4. Unfortunately, I'm absolutely no Caroni expert to be able to correctly assign this blind sample to a vintage, as I either haven't drunk some vintages at all or simply haven't done any vintage crosstasting yet. However, from what I have drunk recently, this blind sample is closest to 1996 and is therefore estimated to be 20-23 years old. Not to forget the finish, which is expectedly long with lots of wood and a pleasant bitterness. Yes, what can I say? I would have liked to have had a larger sample of this rum, as I found it delicious on the one hand and would like to crosstest it against other Caronis on the other. 92 points.
