Nail polish and overripe banana lead the nose, then pineapple and a whole basket of yellow tropical fruit — the Hampden signature, but tamed by 23 years in wood. The HLCF mark keeps the esters medium rather than full-throttle, so it reads balanced instead of wild. Sweetness and acidity sit level, the finish turns dry, woody and lightly smoky. At 50% the alcohol pushes hard for some.

9,1:On the nose, esters, nail polish, funky, tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, green, citrus fruits, berries, rhubarb, fresh, grassy(hints of hay) molasses, flowery, herbaceous, vegetal with briny olive, toasted wood notes like nuts, spicy, bump into our nosetrils, buttery. On aeration, the rum is balanced, yet complex, red fruits join, become slightly pungent, rotten, molasses is sweet with honeycomb, the wood smoky, spicy with new wave of notes like hints of bacon, marzipan, caramelized, allspice and medicinal notes like rubber join, some hints of yoghurt. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, rubber, slightly metallic, fruity with tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits, rhubarb, some candied, the wood is burnt with bacon, smoky with pastry, caramelized, spicy with allspice and molasses is sweet with honeycomb, vegetal with briny olive. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic with nutty wood, sweet with brown sugar, smoky, tropical citrus fruits and vegetal molasses, grassy with hay, floral, slightly medicinal with rubber, phenol. 21.04.2017 Meeting with a few colleagues for a nice evening with good food and drinks. Notes Medium dark colour. Nose Fresh, intense, light wood, ester, fruity, overripe, light smoke. Palate Intense, warm, wood, light roasted, fruity, banana, overripe, vegetal, light caramel, faint chocolate. Finish Very long and warm, wood, fruity, light chocolate, citrus.

Very pleasant matured Hampden with a balanced ester-tropical fruit mix. Nail polish, banana and pineapple are represented as usual. Wood notes only subtly recognizable. The alcohol is almost too dominant

The 1992 Hampden vintage delivers again. They are simply wonderfully balanced. They convey the tropical fruits beautifully. The alcohol is very well integrated. Sweetness and acidity are well balanced. The finish is slightly woody and slightly smoky. But it all fits together very well.

A very pleasant piece. A craftily made combination of fruit, lacquer, and adhesives, with the HLCF mark indicating it won't be an ester bomb. A very nice piece, but it struggles to justify its price.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that produces rum as well as alcohol for perfume. In all the rums from this distillery you will taste wild esters, after which your whole organism will soak up the smell of golden tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the "must try before you die" rums
