Malecon 20 Years - Rare Proof 1999
Here's the surprise: at nearly 50% it still drinks soft and round, not hot. Expect caramel, vanilla, chocolate and a little oak, with dried fruit and spice underneath. Several tasters read a clear sweetness here and suspect a touch of added sugar. Easy and gentle, though the finish fades fast. A comfortable Panama sipper for people easing past 40% rum.

How does Malecon 20 Years - Rare Proof 1999 taste?
Summarized by AI from 32 community reviews.
Soft, sweet Panama sipper, short finish Well liked as a smooth, sweet Panama sipper — caramel and vanilla over well-tamed alcohol. The recurring gripe: the finish is short and a couple find it too sweet.

Tastes a lot like the 1996 version, but less powerful flavors and a little sweeter. I prefer the 1996 version. The nose is fruity and woody with aromas of vanilla and oak. At the palate and during the rather long finish it’s complex, sweet, fruity and spicy with flavors of vanilla and oak.

Not uninteresting. Pleasantly woody, but also perfumed. I could imagine it perfectly with a cigar.

A relatively elaborate profile for a Hispanic-style rum, with quite a few strings to its bow. The nose evokes something fairly sweet but with a modicum of character, including toffee, caramel, spices, a little wood, dried fruit and chocolate on a bourbon influence. A rather engaging nose at first glance. The attack on the palate still shows a kind of sweet roundness with caramel and chocolate, but the spices, oak, coffee, walnuts, chilli and cinnamon give it that peachy edge that suits this type of profile so well. The above-average alcohol level is not at all disturbing, on the contrary. However, the finish shows the limits of this type of profile, with a length that is far too short on the palate. Overall, we find the same archetype, but with slightly more toasted and dried fruit notes. A pleasant rum that allows sugar lovers to make a smooth transition to richer profiles.

Another big surprise. Unfortunately the finish is too short and maybe a tad too sweet for me. A great rum overall.

Very pleasing nose, nothing bites - no wonder at just under 50%, very round. No surprises on the palate and again very relaxed. Unfortunately, the rum disappeared quite quickly from our perception in the aftertaste. Nothing is mentioned on the label, but it seems to me that a small amount of sugar is involved. Good Panamarum to get to know rum beyond 40% alcohol

I wasn't expecting anything from this rum. The nose is surprisingly good, round, chocolaty with some raisins. Very drinkable on the palate, pleasing, I would guess a sherry finish or the addition of sugar. Finishes a little quickly.

Quite strong clear brown. The nose impression very round, caramel, sweetness, spices. Everything feels very soft and inviting even though these are not explosions of aromas. On the palate, caramel sweetness dominates clearly. Followed by spicy components with some dried fruits. The finish rather short with the same notes as on the palate. Some cask influence coming in. All very drinkable and a quite good representative of this rum style. I can well imagine it as a rum for guests who don't go for the high ABV representatives and who like a bit more sweetness.

This one doesn't grab me at all, somehow not my thing this rum. I find the fruitiness dominant here, plum and dried fruits are recognizable. Otherwise, a slight sweetness, some vanilla and wood.

I got this rum because it is very well rated and still affordable. Unfortunately, it doesn't reach a higher rating for me because it is too sweet. Great for beginners. And a glass as a dessert is nice. But no more than that.

Weak on the nose, sweetish on the taste, vanilla, caramel, some wood. Alcohol quite well integrated. Short finish. I suspect the bottle was open for a while and the rum has changed. Retest needed 😉
