Best poured neat and given time — the nose plays it shy, but the palate opens up with warm spices, pepper, cocoa and vanilla over a beautiful oak backbone. This is a rounded, well-aged Guadeloupe agricole with a touch of dry bitterness lazing in the background. A few tasters wished a bottle at this level surprised them more; it's polished rather than thrilling.

The quite long finish goes the same way as at the palate. This brand was founded 2002 when Guillaume Drouin teamed up with Francois Longueteau at the Esperance/Longueteau Distillery to create an Agricole made from blue cane. Karukera is by the way the Carib’s name on Guadeloupe.

Now we are in the ~200€ league of Karukera. Characteristically subtle nose, coy even. But I have already learnt that just as you do not judge a book by its cover, do not judge a Karukera by its nose. Palate holds warm spices for days, perfectly integrated alchohol, a "washing over you" sensation that makes the flavors more akin to a coherent wave than just shots here and there. The characteristic dry and bitter note does not need to play balancer but is just lazily hanging in the background and it all works quite well without it having to work hard to create interest. A confident, mature, and full-bodied rum. No gimmicks, just very high quality Agricole goodness.

Just had a nice tasting of 6 rums and here's one of them. A bit dry but tastes really nice. Well balanced, complex and makes you feel like you're in heaven. The price to quality of this rum is very good. A really nice rum from France!

I think this Agricole is great. Great nose consisting of spices (especially pepper) and oak. Then a bunch of impressions on the palate. In addition to spices and oak, there is chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, and nuts.

A good Karukera! A nose of red fruits, guava, lots of spices, lots of flowers, and a hint of sulfur. A palate with citrus, spices, chocolate, wood, lots to sink your teeth into! A little expensive for its reduction level.

It's a really well-balanced, round agricultural rum with everything you could want: fruit, spices, slightly floral notes, and a nice woodiness. It's very good, but ultimately not surprising. It has no flaws, but for the price range, I would have liked a surprise. I prefer Neisson XO, which is half the price and even tastier!
