Tar, rubber and petrol hit first — this is unmistakably Caroni. Behind the industrial punch there's toasted oak, chocolate, leather and a cool minty/menthol streak, with a little green apple and banana peeking through. One taster called this the "biggest surprise" of the Jack Tar set, noting a fresher, greener side than its siblings. Long, dry, tannic finish. Bottled at 60.1%, it's serious stuff.

14.06.2025 Retasting and I still like it a lot. -------------- Wow, this Caroni hits you smack in the face. When you open and pour there's no doubt this is a Caroni. The nose is intense with Caroni flavours, rubber, tar and petrol, wow. Wood, fruit and chocolate then pops out and a light hint of leather to finish off. The palate is picking up where the nose left off. Toasted oak, tar and rubber is there right off the bat followed by fruit and licorice a d i sence a minty/menthol note in there as well. The finish is very long, as in very long, dry and spicy with some tobacco and light fruits. A very good Caroni.

8,7:On the nose, petrol, rubber and tar, intense, roasted wood notes with chocolate, nuts, leather, green apple, banana and berries, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the nuts are caramelized, the wood spicy with green pepper, later a hint of umami pops up, the molasses is herbaceous, some orange peel might be present... Balanced and round. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is intense, later slightly bitter with industrial notes like rubber and tar, perhaps with menthol hints, roasted wood notes with mocha, nuts, caramelized, oaky, pastry, quite spicy with anise, vanilla, as the molasses is herbaceous, minty, vegetal with fennel, slightly mineral and the fruits are tropical with mango and pineapple, banana, some citrus. 8,6:The finish is long dry and tannic, bitter, as the industrial notes pair roasted wood notes, oaky and spicy, tropical fruits, earthy molasses with tobacco. Very straightforward, weighty Caroni profile with distinct bitterness of smoke and coffee flavors. The depth of tropically aged Caronis with its aromatic complexity and balance remains unmatched, but the dry structure provides flavorful conciseness in a positive way. Among the 1997 Caronis definitely among the better bottlings.

Caroni is really already a benchmark for itself, even the bad ones are still awesome. Here too we have mega lots of tar and rubber. Otherwise still good mineral and good woody/minty. Great rum anyway.
