Sip this one neat and slow — it's a Caroni, but a gentle one. You get the tar and rubber you'd expect, plus vanilla, leather, pear and raisin, though the palate reads thinner and a touch watery. Several tasters call it a "relaxing Caroni," rounder and softer than the dirtier bottlings. Lovely age, just lighter on the classic funk.

A sample of rum tasted after a Caroni 1996 21 yo and the impression was that of a diluted, tasteless rum dominated by pear and butter with some distant reminders of a mechanical workshop. Tasted again on its own, the note will be better without the comparison, but the diluted, buttery pear side is still there. On the nose and palate, however, there's more mechanical workshop and more depth. The finish is rather long and still leaves a little rubber/tar on top of the fruit. Very expensive for a very average Caroni. The empty glass is much more expressive than the rest, with a Demerara edge. Thanks for the sample Thomas.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: With the two 1983 Caronis, it is noticeable that the dirty notes are not particularly present, instead rather light, i.e. LTR-typical sweet notes come to the fore. For me, the (alleged) Full Proof at 55% is a little ahead of the 52% High Proof thanks to a little more complexity and more concise tar and gum notes. Overall, the profile is almost like an LTR & HTR blend.

05.06.2026 I am in the mood for Caroni today so I decided to dig out some of the samples I have. No spitting today for sure 😃 ----------- 14.12.2018 A nice relaxing evening with good food and rums galore. Notes. Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose: light, wood, roasted, light leather, cherry, rubber. Palate: oily, wood, roasted, leather, cherry, light rubber, faint tar, light licorice. Finish: short to medium, wood, licorice, dried fruit, light rubber.

A nice Caroni from the older vintage of this distillery. It already has the beautiful and well-recognizable "dirty" notes you expect, but overall it feels a bit thin and unfortunately watered down.

Tasting d. 06.08.2026 Gift from Mr. Daniel Jungberg. RX6412 Caroni HTR 1983. Nose: Faint tar and diesel, light rubber and old wood. Cherry, overripe plum and mirabelle, sweet licorice. Missing some complexity, quite light Caroni. Buttery balanced sweetness. Residual taste is full of sweetness and light spicy notes like white pepper. Pear, cherry and light plum mix, faint of tar and rubber. The glass: Oak and light tar. Tasting “In the cave”

A very relaxed Caroni. The dirty aromas can be tasted with tar and rubber but it is far from a real HTR. The fruit notes are mainly raisin and pear. On the palate it feels a bit diluted, but the finish is really long.

A few days ago I had a 1996 HTR Caroni RX39 in the glass and was prepared for a similar wild exploration - and was rather disappointed. Upon pouring, it emits first familiar aromas of barrel, tar and oily notes. However, it remains pale there and hardly develops over time. So after half an hour in the glass I tasted and a weak first impression was confirmed. Some fruits, slight hints of industry and workshop - but not the expected concentrated power. Quite heretically one could question why HTR is on the label. But well, there will also be friends of the quieter Caroni keyboard. But I don't buy a McLaren to drive through 30 zones.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Very delicate Caroni. Maybe even too delicate. Still, it must be admitted that this is a very old rum that has something to offer. Unfortunately, there are rums bearing the HTR mark that offer much more intensity and flavor.

Rather light Caroni with limited typical Caroni notes, oily, buttery, some caramel, leather notes. I actually like it but it is missing complexity and typical dirty notes of best Caronis unfortunately

Among the few Caronis I've tried 😬 definitely not the best, I actually preferred the 23y from the classic line, but I liked it... simple and rounded, the finish is short. What I don't understand is the really high market price.
