Expect tar, rubber, burnt oil and polish up front, then dark fruit, chocolate and oak underneath. At 65.5% the alcohol is there but well integrated. Not for every night, and not the most extreme Caroni out there, but tasters find real depth and balance.

A Kill Devil single cask from 1998 to be tasted absolutely, drunk in comparison with the magnificent Caroni 21 from Velier and it surpasses it in character and originality, but not in terms of diversity and depth of flavors.To the nose the tar and the rubber are well present with tropical fruits.On the palate the integration of the alcohol is perfect, no burn but a palette of flavors immediately present.The finish is infinite with a hint of esters in addition.A demanding rum, it must be given a lot of time in the glass, but it combines these two things: extremity and balance.The empty glass reveals yet more aromas of fruit and machine shop.

Kill Devil offers here a very elegant Caroni, full of finesse. The nose is very empyreumatic, with meaty notes of grilled bacon and barbecue smoke. While tar and rubber are predictable, the combination of prunes, dark chocolate, and exotic fruits brings a lot of indulgence. The wood and spices refine an already very sophisticated profile. The attack on the palate is dense, oily, and intense, but it holds many flavors: tropical fruits (especially papaya) and pastries accompany the mechanical workshop notes for even more smoothness. Fine spices and well-toasted oak remain on a firmer but intense line, offering a nice contrast on the palate. The alcohol is present but well integrated for its high ABV. The finish is long and just as contrasting: a caramelized and honeyed side supports an opulent fruitiness, while a pinch of salt seasons this finish, bordered by dark chocolate, oak, spices, and hydrocarbons. The magic works and allows this Kill Devil to rank among the best of its vintage.

Good continental aged Caroni with clearly recognizable signature. Smoky and spicy notes are in the foreground, along with dark fruit, tar and a hint of rubber. On the palate it feels dense, dry and pleasantly edgy without being overly demanding. The balance is right, the depth is solid, and overall it’s really enjoyable, even if it’s not among the absolute top representatives of the vintage.

On the nose a lot of tar, burnt oil, then polish and nice wood maturity. With a little water it becomes creamier, more chocolate and coffee. The alcohol is well integrated. No fruit.In the mouth then sharper and a bit thin, long, nice finish.A very dirty Caroni with rough edges. Very good.

Wonderful Caroni 98, clear winner for me tonight. Great balance between fruits, industrial notes and cask influence. Perfect alcohol integration, it is powerful but does not overshadow any flavors. The finish is long and lets you still explore the multiple notes.

In the nose still relatively restrained comes on the palate the full force!!! Dirty... somehow racetrack... gas station and dirty! The AlkoholIst noticeable, but not unpleasant! A class rum, but not for every evening

A great rum. Clearly identifiable as Caroni. Typical dirty notes of rubber, solvents, and some tar appear on the nose and palate. Of course, there are more intense Caronis, but a great 98er representative at a fair price.

My RumRating Review 3y ago: In the nose, the Caroni is immediately recognizable and it directly triggers a smile. I love that smell. Nice and dirty comes a certain sweetness. There is also a fruity part. Wood and a little caramel. Ashtray and some tar. With a little time in the glass, the rum becomes a little more balanced. On the palate, the rum is intense. The 65% pushes the aromas forward. A pleasant fruity sweetness is quickly captured by dirty notes. Tar and leather. But also wood and tannins. Everything is very complex and can be overwhelming when drinking. At the finish, the dirty note remains and wood, leather and some sweetness accompany the long finish. The aromas persist for a long time. The Kill Devil Caroni 1998 is a fantastic rum. If you like dirty caroni, this is the right place for you. In addition, this bottling is even affordable. It is absolutely amazing and unique how the glass smells after drinking. Even the devil can't kill that dirty note.

Really nice technical taste! ... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.

Very typical representative of the 1998 Caroni vintage. The alcohol is present but not disturbing; the aromas from the HTR profile come through, along with wood, dark spices, caramel, vanilla... balanced, a very good release.

Aroma: smoky, sweet-fruity, iodic, a lot of wood, exotic fruits, very dense aroma, but with a bias towards tanned fruits. He stood and floral and tobacco tones appeared. Taste: powerful, very powerful, clogged into all receptors, but not so alcoholic, a pit of fruit, smoke, paint and resin. Long light smoky fruity aftertaste with a slight bitterness. Аромат: дымный лакокрасочный сладковато-фруктовый, йодистый, много дерева, экзотических фруктов, очень плотный аромат, но с уклоном в сторону задубленных фруктов. Постоял и проявились цветочные и табачные тона. Вкус: мощный, очень мощный забивается во все рецепторы, но не такой спиртуозный, яма фруктов, дыма, краски и смолы. Долгое лёгкое дымное фруктовое послевкусие с лёгкой горчинкой.
