Here's the twist several tasters keep flagging: for a Caroni, this one barely reads like one. The trademark tar and diesel are dialed way down — instead you get wood, cocoa, dried yellow fruit, a little banana and coconut, and a creamy, lightly sweet palate. At 62% a jab of petrol and dryness does show up mid-sip, then vanishes fast. Balanced and mild rather than dirty.

#4218 19.08.2023 we had our yearly meeting among old friends. When we do this once a year its without partners, cellphones and other gadgets. Just some nice rums, a piece of paper and a pen and most fun of all, a blind tasting. The theme of 2023 was Caroni and we had a great time and spend no less then 10 hours talking and tasting. This one was a bit milder in the profile, but still pretty well balanced in the overall profile. Lightly fruity with spices and a nice caramel note. Draws nice curtains and the empty glass has some chocolate and very light coconut.

My first Caroni from the 80s. The nose is very restrained. Some dried fruit, a little banana and coconut, a little sweetness and some vanilla. Caroni? No.... You have to look hard for dirty components and you'll find them in the background. I would never have guessed a caroni here blind. In the mouth it's creamy, silky and slightly sweet, and there's a simultaneous charge of gasoline and dryness in the mouth. Immediately after it's gone, however, there's virtually nothing left of it. Caroni on the back burner, not worth the effort as a fan!

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Hardly recognizable as HTR Caroni on the nose, wood meets cocoa and dried yellow fruit. The palate is somewhat more tart, with a good balance between wood, dark chocolate, subtle spices, dried fruit and subtle HTR aromas. It certainly has its charms, even if they lie outside the familiar Caroni profile.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the time of its greatest glory rum, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000, the distillery ceased production and closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who took a liking to the rum because of its special taste. And the interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of "you need to try before you die" rums. I recommend it, Caroni is a truly unique rum.
