Doesn't knock my socks off. Tastes strange somehow. Too alcoholic at the end. Update 2024-08-13: Much more drinkable than at the first tasting. The port finish now also comes through well and rounds off the rum. Upgraded by 4 points to 80.

So now I finally got around to Gunnar's Mauritius Split. At first impression, it's not that bad. Although I find it a bit lacking in complexity. I'd rather classify it as an easy sipper.

A really unusual Mauritius. Chili and grape with a bit of cinnamon and port influence, dangerously easy to drink. Definitely a rum you can enjoy well, but personally, I'm more a fan of Mauritius without the finish.

cane juice at something like cask strength is another story. Complex, warm, balanced, iridescent between the red fruity notes and the brown caramel notes. A nice night out, a warm touch…too man samples today

Interesting finish, the port doesn’t come across as too dominant. On the nose, there are initially light aromas of raisins and grassy Agricole influences, but also a pronounced alcohol. Surprisingly, the alcohol doesn’t stand out much on the palate; a nice Agricole with fruity, spicy notes from the finish. Nice drink overall.

Auburn Aroma: Smells sweet and very fruity raisins and port, while surprisingly mild and round for the alcohol content. Taste: Round and fruity-sweet in the mouth, then becomes spicy. When swallowed, it tastes of raspberry candy and sweets (maoam). Fruity raspberry syrup, port, red grape juice and raisins. In addition, toffee, cloves and cinnamon, pepper and wood. Finish: Medium length Spicy and woody, yet still fruity and vinous. Remains pleasant.

Pleasant on the nose and well balanced between light barrel influence and the typical grassy-fresh notes of Agricoles. The taste continues this, with interesting fruity and spicy aromas like ginger coming through. Worth a try!

Joshua from 1423 World Class Spirits sent me this sample a while ago – many thanks for that. And here again a very similar nose as with the other two candidates. However, already here in the nose the port finish comes in, which reminds me a lot of the Worthy Park with port finish from S.B.S – certainly similar port casks :). The finish is also noticeable on the palate but does not dominate – well integrated. Unfortunately, the alcohol is not as well integrated here as in the NG 2005, but it does not fall short of the NG 2005 in complexity and body. The port finish becomes noticeably stronger again in the finish. A great rum that sweetened my evening in Hvide Sande. 83 points

A balance between the typical New Grove fruitiness (apricot, peach) and the spices, woodiness, berries (blackcurrant, elderberry), and the winey note of port. The strength brings power but preserves concentration.

Very fruity nose. On the palate, spices like eucalyptus, herbs as well as some cinnamon and fruity notes of grape, blackcurrant, also some peach dominate. Mild sweetness. Despite the 55.7%, it sips very well.
