"Weltklasse dieser Caroni," one taster wrote, and most reviews land near there. It's the classic dirty Trinidad profile — tar, rubber, glue and menthol up front, then leather, burnt sugar, vanilla and tropical fruit (banana, mango, dried fruit) with a very long finish. At 65.2% the heat is real but well integrated. A few call it a touch dry and hot; nearly everyone calls it superb.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Together with Paradise #5, this remains my favorite Caroni from the 2000 vintage. In direct comparison with significantly more menthol on the nose. On the palate with a powerful taste, great residual sweetness, woodiness and a pointed presence of the individual aromas. Absolute top class.

Wonderful representative of the 2000s Velier Caronis. Together with Paradise 5 it forms the elite of this vintage, for me it’s in second place because the #5 seems a bit rounder. Of course, typical Caroni DNA here as well at top level.

A wonderful Caroni! Pretty sure this is the first 2000 vintage I have tried and it didn't dissapoint. Very powerful, on the nose there's is tar, menthol and vanilla, on the palate, its wonderfully complex and dirty, tar, wood, oils, then some sweetness with cappuccino. Enjoyed this one!

What can I say or write? I am thrilled! For me, it combines the classic Caroni... lots of dirty aromas, something fresh, with menthol, mint, vanilla, fruit, some coffee and an endless finish, just delicious 🤤

Wow, great nose. Dirty Caroni and a full basket of fruit. Very complex, warm, the alcohol is well integrated, the long time in the tropics shows in perfect ripeness. You can sniff it for a long time. Very, very strong in the mouth. Lots of spice, especially pepper Medium-long finish. Spices, caramel. Great 2000 Caroni, I like it better than the Dicky.🤩

90 points. Outstanding Caroni from the 2000 vintage. All the flavours that I like in a good Caroni are present in the nose and on the palate: Vanilla, tar, menthol, tropical fruit with banana shining through, leather, burnt sugar. A delight with an outstanding and long finish.

On aeration, aromas are balanced, round, creamy with vanilla, nuts, red fruits and berries. 9,2:On the palate, the attack is delicious, round with dirty industrial notes like tar, rubber, menthol and intermingle with roasted, toasted wood notes with leather, caramelized burnt sugar, later dark chocolate and caramel, spiciness, dried and tropical fruits, after resting with citrus, currants and berries, with flowery and herbaceous molasses. 9,2:The finish is long, tannic, milder as before, fruity with dried fruits, dark with licorice, roasted wood notes like coffee, dark chocolate, caramel, nuts, spicy and the molasses is minty, earthy with tobacco..

A Caroni that I liked very much right away. My experience with the 2000 vintage was limited until now. What you get here, however, I like really good and I could hardly imagine that this goes much better. Very complex, very fruity, dirty and with a beautiful barrel maturity at the same time, which is also here for me virtually on the point. Should you ever really have a craving for junkyard flavor, I would personally wish for exactly that again.... Not too coarse, but also in no case too softened

Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad that produced rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery stopped production and closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Really tasty 2000 Caroni ... I've only tried a few Velier 2000s, but this is the most convincing. Dirty Caroni notes with tar, rubber and gunpowder in combination with round caramel/toffee and fruit (banana, mango, dried fruit) as well as nice wood and leather notes.

There were a few employes in the test today. Yunkoo, Buju, Nitz and Brigade. To sum up, they are all very tasty caronis. For me, only Brigade is the one that has lost out a little, the others are all very close together. My ranking today would be: 1st Yunkoo 2. Nitz 3. Buju 4. brigade

A rather sharp nose, with alcohol, sweetness, tropical fruits, dried fruits, a vegetal side and a pastry side, vanilla. A very complex nose. The mechanical workshop, with in particular notes of gasoline, is present but rather in the background. The first mouthfeel is a bit prickly and bitter, the wood and fruits gain strength with, at the end, pastry and caramelized notes but the rum remains quite dry, without sweetness. The notes of gasoline, tar and rubber come at the end. The finish is long, very long with lots of complexity. The balance that was a bit lacking in the first mouthfeel is perfect here. A rum with small flaws but with lots of power, freshness and fresh fruits.

Waste oil, burnt rubber and dark sweetness on the nose. Powerful but balanced on the palate - tar, licorice, dark fruits and spices with perfect integration of the alcohol. Long, intense finish with typical Caroni signature. Great balance!

3rd Employees Tasting: Absolute top representative of the 2000s Caronis. The menthol is especially intense on the nose, and on the palate you discover more and more aromas with every sip. The alcohol is a bit sharp-edged on the finish.

Fourth employee of the evening. The most interesting scent so far, mixing technical tar and glue vulnes with candied fruit, cappuccino and vanilla. Very good Caroni with the typical Caroni characteristics. Rather on the dry side and for me the alcohol is a tad too present. But that's complaining on a very high level. Unfortunately, it's not quite enough for a top rating for me.

Last Caroni that i sampled at German Rum Festival and i have to say that this one didnt work for at all, eventhou this rum did sit in the glass for a good 50 minutes while i was at other tasting class. On the nose: Oily, rubbery and tar notes. Woody notes, earthy notes. Roasted. Tobacco notes Taste: Woody notes, earthy notes. Black tea. Oily rubbery, slightly dirty thats typical to Caroni. Opens up with dried fruits and mocha notes. Finish: Tobacco notes, minty notes, woody notes and roasted. Black tea notes. Mocha notes. Nice complexity on the finish. Finished dry. Maybe needs more than 50 minutes in the glass or my taste buds were off, but while it had complexity and somewhat of typicsl Caroni notes i got more of typical TDL notes out of this one. Price to quality didnt unfortunately meet for me on this rum.

A top Caroni representative and for me one of the best from the Employee series. Powerful and full-bodied Caroni flavor. Tar, leather, menthol with a pleasant sweetness. The 65% gives a decent punch and could be a tad better integrated for me. Nevertheless, very tasty.

This is the third release of the Employees series. Distilled in 2000 and bottled very recently in 2020. A great sipping rum with a lot of power. Some may want to add a few drops of water which will result in the release of even more flavours.

The 2000 is a Caroni vintage I particularly like for its dirtier and more peculiar character! Tar, menthol, and rubber dominate, pushed by an incredible intensity! Fruits, caramel, and burnt sugar give it the more balanced part of the tasting!

Very nice nose : typical Trinidad but subtle also, a bit smoky tone, exceptional robe - almost reddish. Silky despite the alcohol, very integrated, rich taste, wakes up ! Nice and smooth finish. Outrageous price but… worth a dégustation 😉

Very good Caroni, it has a very nice balance between tar, plastic and wood on one hand, and on the other hand it delivers a lot of tropical fruits, especially mango. It's definitely among the very good Caronis.

Yesss this one is for me. Nice Caroni nose with roasted sugar, vanilla, gum, tar. Continues like that on the palate with fruits, dark chocolate, nuts. The menthol part could be a bit less for me.

#1723 31-01-2026 - Rate 9.3 One of two finishers to a great rum evening. And what a Caroni. Nose of rubber, glue, methanol and wood/ roast. Palate of tar, leather, burnt sugar, wood and a hint of citrus. Long finish dominated by tar, leather and wood.

A superb Caroni, powerful and indulgent as desired. The nose is adorned with empyreumatic and medicinal notes, both salty and refreshing: tar, smoke, and rubber meet menthol and camphor, forming an original combination that works. You can also detect fruits (banana, dried fruits), wood, spices (chili, pepper, licorice), leather, but also caramel candy as found in the 1998 Vintage. The whole is rich, dense, and creamy. The attack on the palate immediately plunges you into the Caroni atmosphere: rubber, hydrocarbons, dark and smoky sequences that lead to wood, leather, dark chocolate, and coffee, but also exotic fruits (banana, mango), caramel candy, and burnt sugar follow smoothly and clearly in the mouth. The structure is complete, homogeneous, coherent, and makes you want to come back without hesitation. This is a Caroni with a traditional profile but very well executed, powerful and captivating, warm and comforting. The alcohol warms the palate but is relatively well integrated. The finish is long, lined with petrol notes and supported by tannic notes on the wood. Fresh tobacco and menthol refresh the palate while coffee, dark chocolate, leather, and spices (licorice, chili, pepper, vanilla) tend to warm it. The profile is dry but gains indulgence with caramel and dried fruits. A superb Caroni from the 2000s with many complex aromatic sequences that change with each sip, a clear success.

A bit better than Vijay from the third batch of employees. In addition to rubber and tar, there's also menthol and fruit (dried, tropical), and in the long finish tobacco also comes through here. Very good rum, a pity about the high price at auctions.

What a fantastic 2000 offering. Fresh and dirty rubber and menthol. A load of roast aromas with tar and a hint of mentholy vanilla. Some tar to finish this strong caroni and really wakes it place at an already strong year.
