12.11.2005 The Den, Beijing This was my first tasting in China, where I lived for a little over 7 years. This was my contribution to the tasting. A bottle i had brought (smuggled) in my shipment of personal items when moving from Sweden to Shanghai. My notes. Very dark in colour. Woody with some licorice, plum and dried fruit. Palate is oily and medicinal with wood, spice and dried fruit. Medium finish with dried fruit, wood and anise.

Thank you Johannes for the samples. Rx3886 Berry Bros & Rudd Port Mourant Demerara 1975, 32y, 46% Dried plums, licorice, old rotten wood, molasses, cola, bitter chocolate, coffee, brown sugar Licorice, dried fruit, spiciness, bitter chocolate and overall sweet-bitter taste. Very rich, complex and full at 46%, very warm nose and taste. Rx6635 Rum Nation Demerara 1975, 25y, 45% Immediately after pouring very fruity fresh and floral. After inhaling the profile darkens into licorice, dried plums, spiciness and wood. The taste is noticeably more diluted, fruity flavors prevail complemented again by licorice, spiciness and wood. Not as heavy and full because freshness of tropical and continental fruit remains. Rx5335 Rum Nation Demerara 1975, 31y, 43% On the nose vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, brown sugar, sweet pastries, dried fruit, wood. The same tones appear in the taste. Overall quite diluted and therefore rather unremarkable, light and sweeter. Rx11728 Samaroli Demerara 1975, 31y, 45% Initially continental fruit, especially red apple, after a while dark notes of licorice, dried plums, wet wood, light cola, but also sweeter notes of chocolate, vanilla and caramel become more pronounced. In taste again first light fruit, which quickly shifts to licorice, wood and spicy and coffee bitterness. It's a mix of the second and third sample, besides typical dark traits it's fresh and fruity, but also sweeter.

An old Demerara that really suffered from the dilution. The nose is a melange of applebrandy, tropical fruit, Apfelkraut and jung wood. In the Palate you again get the Apfelkraut, burned sugar, and some savoury nots like Celerysalt or lovage with a lot of rum raisin goodnes. It finishes with spice and warm woody flavours. a light, crisp woodyness taht ha a certain dryness. And the bitterness like Aqua-Faba has. Brilliant profile just limited by the 45%. Shame!
