Foursquare Doorly's XO Fine Old Barbados Rum
Newcomers and anyone wanting a clean, classic Barbados profile land here first. It's the Foursquare signature at 43%: vanilla, caramel, oak and dried fruit, with a faint sherry-cask sweetness. Easy and mild going down, but the finish runs short and a bit thin, and the wood can shout over everything else. Several tasters call it a "nice sipper" they'd rebuy.

- Easy, mild sipping
- Keep in mind: Thin, short finish

From community reviews · summarized with AI
Easy, oaky Barbados starter sipper Most see a well-made, easy Barbados sipper with strong value. The recurring gripe: too mild, thin and short, with wood dominating — some wish it had a few more percent and more depth.

Most helpful positive review
A very solid Doorlys with a good price-performance ratio. Toffee and barrel notes are recognizable. There is also a hint of vanilla in the taste and the typical Foursquare taste comes into its own

Foursquare makes high quality rum with flavor so mild it's easily overwhelmed by cask wood. The whole Doorly's line of rums suffers from too much wood at every age, which is really disappointing. I'm done with Doorly's. I won't rebuy.

Barbados for falling in love with. Tempting smell with well balanced spices and dried and tropical fruits. The taste is very paralell, round and easy to love. The finish ist the weakest point, the adtertaste doesn’t last too long, it’s a bit watery. Anyway, this rum is a safe choice for almost anybody.

Very good value for money!

A rum tasted at the Lucerne Gin and Rum Festival 2024. A nose of dried fruit, yellow fruit, coconut, cookies and marzipan. The palate is smooth, a little diluted, but the peppery spices take over with a nutty edge. Wood and bitterness. The finish is short, with wood, spice and bitterness. A well-made, gourmet entry-level rum.
Review by HenryL
Great value for money!Nice fruity with the Foursquare typical bite, although a bit lighter and less peppery. Pleasant sweetness, but the sherry cask breaks with it a certain mustiness that becomes a bit too much for me after a certain amount.
Review by Tim
Delicious rum at a very good price! Typical Foursquare professionals with caramel, roasted aromas, spices and fruit, but also with an alcoholic note. The 43% makes it rather mild and easy to drink in the mouth. At the same time, the aromas are not particularly intense, so a few % more would be good. Anyway, great for beginners.

05.08.2022 A nice afternoon with other rum geeks and an evening visiting a few bars. Notes Medium dark to dark in colour. Nose Round, lightly sweet, light wood, faint smoke, dried fruit, cherry, light earthy. Palate Round, oily, sweet, light wood, light cherry, spice, light grapes, faint chocolate. Finish Medium long, light wood, sweet, cherry, light roasted, faint coffee, faint smoke, dried fruit.

All my Tastings and Scores are purely based on “Rums under £50”. I rarely look at Rums over £50 for my YouTube.
Review by Galli33
A very good, entry-level Foursquare with a top price-per-value ratio. From start to finish you will find the classic Foursquare Aromas, a some esters and an acceptable alcohol content. This rum is fun!
Review by Hansi
Very, very smooth in taste and smell. Vanilla and woody in aroma and flavor. Overall, a really great package. Nice to drink neat and not too expensive for a Rum Old Fashioned.
Review by Johannes
Very thin, young, lots of neutral alcohol, little flavor, some vanillin, little wood.
Review by Matiss
A wonderful expression from Foursquare distillery!! Affordable(30 EUR) , no added sugar or additives(besides the sherry barrel). Very pleasant, easy sipping, surprisingly smooth rum with faint, but noticeable sherry note. This rum for its price is a very good option to experience a classical style of molasses rum.

Romhatten virtual Foursquare tasting date 11.09.2026 RX6813 FS Doorly’s XO Nose: Vanilla sweetness, yellow fruits, caramel and coconut. Mouth: Sweet caramel and coconut, vanilla and nutty notes, light spicy and wood. A little to much water irrigation. Residual taste is short warm with light spices, pleasant nutty sweetness. The glass: Cardboard & vanilla. Tasting “In the cave”
Review by Vincent D
Rather pleasant nose, sweet, vanilla, easy but engaging. On the palate, the impression is confirmed. Easy to drink and not monolithic. Simple and easy. But not without interest. Very pleasant toasted coconut. Woody vanilla finish. Nice for a first approach to Barbados.
Review by Rumantisch
This was my first Foursquare rum that I ever had. At first, I was a bit confused by the spice in the rum, something I hadn't experienced before. Today, I find it very solid and definitely worth trying at least once.
Review by pavlix vipax
Smoother than 12, less complex, smoother, great performance for this price, less complex but fine for everyday drinking, but nothing surprising, but as if it had complexity... lowering from 8.8 to 8.7
Review by Patrik Onderka
Very good price for the money. A tasty and very pleasant Foursquare, my first Doorly. I opened this one when sailing in the vicinity of the Egina island in Saronic gulf in Greece trying to find out it’s iconic Aphaia temple.
Review by Timo Groeger
A pretty good rum. On the nose you get vanilla, alcohol and barrel. On the palate you have vanilla, caramel, spices and barrel. Tastes very mild, alcohol barely unfolds on the palate.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A typical rum from Barbados. Notes of dried fruits, chocolate and spices in the nose and in the mouth. A rather one-dimensional rum, which continues on the same note of roundness with a rather short finish.
Review by Nicola Zagolin
It was one of my first rum bottles, truly exceptional and sweet just right.
Review by Decky Hicks Doughty
A nice rum to sip neat. There isn't much of a Sherry influence but there is a hint on the palate. It's easy going with not much to offend. The finish is a tad peppery for my taste.

I just had Doorlys 12 YO prior to XO and I am not sure if I am weird or everyone else, that gives 12 a higher rate, is. I will be 100% honest with you. The maturation after sherry is awesome it gave XO everything that I missed with 12YO. The sweetness, the prominent chocolate/banana taste with oak barrel/wood being suppressed to the background. With 12YO you had banana taste mixed with sour green apple all underlined by huge woody taste. This one is none of that, you get vanilla, 🍌, raisins, chocolate all underlined but not overpowered by wood/oak. For me this one is a winner and I do not care. The nose is very similar but the palate is a different story. Medium to long finish. 75/100 for me. Reaffirmation: I like XO more than 12YO. Next step is comparison with 14YO. Retasting after AM SC 2001 & 2005 and it stands right at 7.5 that is below SC versions of foursquare as they are typical barbados but they are not offering anything special such as single casks do. I still like XO a little bit more than 12 yo though.

Tropical fruits, ginger, dark chocolate,. Bit weak overall I’ll use that in the kitchen for pastry’s and to flambé onions.

This rum was in 2010 my first contact with real rum. The bottle was empty one day after purchase. It will always taste good to me and have a special place for me. Therefore: Very good!

Bright spot in the Lufthansa Lounge Munich. Nice smooth Foursquare, nice sipper with good value for money!
Review by Torsten vom Endt
Somehow not half and nothing whole. The taste is briefly somewhere between liquid toffee and cookie dough. The fruit content is present but not clearly identifiable. My second and last rum from Doorly's. Certainly a good and mild introduction for beginners. But if you're looking for something special, you won't find it here

It is well made. A good value for money. Nice assembly to discover Barbados.

S 8.0 out of 10, it's a very good bottle, though not the top of my ranking.
Review by Rumbaer
Blind tasting from the Tastillery Advent calendar. You can immediately recognize its origin from Barbados in the nose. Coconut with oak wood. On the palate, a pleasant woody note with a peppery touch. The coconut is no longer noticeable in the mouth.

Along with the 12years, a staple for the bar of every rum lovers
Review by BnBrt
A sweet rum, an easy candy that's pleasant without too much complexity. Not my favorite, but certainly a nice gateway to the world of rum. An appealing nose of slightly ripe fruit. Soft and round on the palate, very pastry-like, the fruit is less present, the alcohol discreet. Pleasant but without much depth, fades quickly.
Review by epicsune 🇸🇪
Very good value for money! Sweet caramel, coconut, vanilla and tropical fruits on the nose. Taste is also sweet but with a semi-dry finish that takes off the ”too sweet” aftertaste. Dried fruits, vanilla and coconut with a well rounded finish.
Review by Schorgelorsch
This one is without a doubt tasty and great for the price. But of course, it's nothing super complex or anything extremely special. I prefer the Doorly's 8. Compared to it, the XO feels thin and has a short finish.

I drank some glasses of this Doorly's from Foursquare at the last company Christmas party. Was very pleasant. For this price-performance ratio, a really drinkable rum. Definitely a good choice for beginners.

A small, pleasant foursquare, perfect to discover Barbados. It is very nice for its price.
Review by François Delmotte
A good molasses with a great value for money. Nose: vanilla, wood, spices, quite round. On the palate: dried fruits, still that woody and candied fruit side, and fairly dry. Finish: above average. Quite a nice length. Lovely tasting, I recommend it.
Review by deanopeez
Not my favorite, but good. Very well rounded nose with more butterscotch than anything else. A mild taste with a finish that really has a lot of brown to it - leather, tobacco, barrel. Should make for good cocktails but probably won't sip this too often
Review by Kieron Wood
Soft pecans ans then notes of toffee on the nose Tasting of apples , butterscotch and thr pecans comes through
Review by Jus Liens
A gourmand nose, far from what I was used to until now. Fat, tobacco vapors, warm, heavy. The taste is almost disappointing: the nose took us much further. But you find vanilla and spices. A gourmand and warm palate nonetheless. A fairly long finish after all, with a slightly bitter tobacco background. A good introduction for someone who doesn't like rum much. Harder for me who comes from clairin, agricole, and Jamaican.
Review by Benoît Testagrossa
A good value for money. On the nose: caramel, roasted aromas, vanilla, and a hint of coconut. Apart from the coconut, it somewhat reminds me of a Depaz VSOP. On the palate, the coconut is not found, but no bad surprises, the flavors correspond to what is perceived on the nose. The peppery flavor is intense (way too much for my taste). One will regret a finish that is too short, leaving only the pepper as a memory.

This is one fine basic rum. One of the best out there. Great entry level.

Caramel, pepper, slightly woody. Quite light.
Review by Jan Králík
I purchased this rum together with the 12-year version. I like both rums and can't decide which one more. This one has a slight sweetness in the taste and aroma, I think it must be the sherry. Otherwise spice, caramel and light fruit. The taste is mild but warms up thanks to the 43%. There is more tropical fruit in the 12 year old version. Both rums are very good for sipping.
Review by Pavel Spacek
Foursquare is a distillery from Barbados producing amazing rums for everyday sipping. It's a rum especially appreciated by rum lovers who are fed up with sugar and are looking for a smooth, sweet rum full of coconut, vanilla, chocolate, and caramel. Simply pleasant and not aggressive flavors.
Review by Kasper
We're at level one = easy going. But still it packs a pretty heavy burnt wood. Awesome for the price and level. Internal rating 1+8. Priority = 4,9 (very good). But here I can only give one score so it lands at a flat 7.

Now, this pretty much gives us the run of the mill foursquare profile. Unfortunately in the palate it gets too thin and to sharp. More time and more abv would probably be the solution. Nevertheless not bad just a bit lacking
